Glendale Offers Resources, Tips for Safe Halloween.
Did you know that children are four times more likely to be hit by a car on Halloween than any other night of the year?
In addition, seasonal decorations and costumes can be highly flammable and pose risks to your family or your home.
Halloween is a popular holiday, with costumes, trick-or-treating and parties, but it can also be a time to be
mindful of safety precautions to make sure everyone has a fun time and stays safe.

The city of Glendale is offering ‘Be Safe, Be Seen’ reflective Halloween bags and glow-in-the-dark bracelets at any of the three
Glendale libraries, which are free while supplies last.

• If trick-or-treating, remember to wear something reflective.
• Drivers should stay on alert, especially in residential neighborhoods.
• Make sure costumes fit to increase the mobility and visibility of children wearing them.
• USA Safe Kids suggests children under the age of 12 be accompanied by an adult.
• Check all treats before they are eaten and report anything suspicious.
• Be sure your children know how to cross a street properly. They should always look both ways before crossing the street and should
only cross at corners or crosswalks. Make sure that if you have more than one child, they know to take the hand of the younger child
when they cross a street.
• For the purpose of lighting jack-o-lanterns, use a flashlight or a liquid light that glows after it bends, not candles.
• Purchase only costumes, wigs and props labeled flame-resistant or flame-retardant. When creating a costume, choose material that
won’t easily ignite if it comes in contact with heat or flame. Avoid billowing or long trailing features.
• Dried flowers, cornstalks and crepe paper are highly flammable. Keep these and other decorations away from all open flames and
heat sources, including light bulbs, heaters, etc.
• Remember to keep exits clear of decorations, ensuring nothing blocks escape routes.
• Use flashlights as alternatives to candles or torchlights when decorating walkways and yards. They are much safer for trick-or-treaters,
whose costumes may brush against the lighting.
• Instruct children to stay away from open flames or other heat sources. Be sure children know how to stop, drop and roll in the
event their clothing catches fire. (Stop immediately, drop to the ground, covering your face with your hands and roll over and over to
extinguish flames.)
• Instruct children who are attending parties at others’ homes to locate the exits and plan how they would get out in an emergency.
• Provide children with lightweight flashlights to carry for lighting or as part of their costume so they can be seen while walking in
neighborhoods.
• Know the route your kids will be taking if you aren’t going with them. Let them know that they are to check in with you every hour, by
phone or by stopping back at home. Make sure that they know not to deviate from the planned route so that you always know where
they will be.

Make the most of your Halloween festivities by following these safety tips from the city of Glendale.

GLENDALE RECEIVES NATIONAL PARK
Re-ACCREDITATION AND RECOGNITION

City’s Parks and Recreation Services among Five Arizona Cities on Exclusive Elite Park List

GLENDALE, Ariz. – The City of Glendale is proud to announce it has been accredited and nationally recognized for its park facilities and recreations programs. This distinguished Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA) re-accreditation was awarded during the 2014 National Recreation and Park Association Congress and Exposition adding Glendale to the exclusive list of elite park and recreation departments across the country.

“Our park and recreation department strives to provide our community with great parks, playgrounds, programs and facilities including our skate parks and aquatic center. We have a very dedicated and professional staff that deserves the recognition of this accreditation as evidence of the fantastic job they do, day in and day out,” said Community Service’s Director, Erik Strunk.

The CAPRA accreditation is the only national accreditation for park and recreation agencies, and is a measure of an agency’s overall quality of operation, management and service to the community.  This mark of distinction indicates that the City of Glendale has met rigorous standards related to the management and administration of lands, facilities, resources, programs, safety and services.

A CARPA accreditation is a quality assurance and improvement process demonstrating the City’s commitment to its employees, residents, visitors and the community.  Glendale joins Mesa, Peoria, Scottsdale and Tucson as the only Arizona cities to receive this accreditation.  As part of the accreditation process, the City of Glendale’s Park, Recreation and Neighborhood Services Division had to demonstrate compliance in to 144 standards. The CARPA accreditation is a five-year cycle that includes a self-assessment report, on-site visitation and the Commission’s review and decision.

GLENDALE WARNS AGAINST
SUSPICIOUS BALLOT COLLECTION ACTIVITY

GLENDALE, Ariz. – The Glendale City Clerk’s Office has received calls about people offering to gather and help complete early ballots for the general election in some Glendale neighborhoods.  The City of Glendale and the Maricopa County Elections Department are not participating in any neighborhood collection projects and warn residents to protect their vote.

“We want to make sure every vote is counted and tallied the way it was intended,” said Darcie McCracken, Glendale’s Deputy City Clerk. “Safeguarding your ballot and your vote by making sure it is received is so important.”

The City of Glendale urges residents voting with an early ballot to take their ballot to a post office or to the City of Glendale’s Ballot Box at the City Hall building at 5850 W. Glendale Ave. through Oct. 31 at 5 p.m.  For an early ballot to be counted in the General Election it must be received (postmarks do not count) by 7 p.m. on Election Day. After Oct. 31, early ballots can be dropped off on Election Day at any polling location. For polling locations across the city of Glendale click here.

GLENDALE CELEBRATES EXEMPLARY
SERVICE DURING A RECORD STORM

Citizens Invited to Learn More about City’s Programs and Services as part of Cities & Towns Week

GLENDALE, Ariz. – As communities across the state celebrate the 13th Annual Cities & Towns Week this week, the city of Glendale is highlighting the outstanding services of more than 100 employees during record setting rainstorm in early September that caused havoc in the Glendale area.

“During any given year the statistics of what city employees do to serve a city of 227,000 residents is remarkable,” said City Manager Brenda S. Fischer. “Watching this same Glendale workforce come together in a time of crisis and their tireless dedication to serve their community is inspiring.”

Mark Brown, an employee in the Glendale Water Services Department is one such employee. Brown’s instrumental command of equipment and staff allocation during the record rainfall on Sept. 8, 2014 safeguarded residents and minimized the lasting damage in the Yucca District.

There were numerous calls related to missing manhole covers, plugged grates, and flooded roadways. Mark took command of the situation and provided solutions to the flooding issues.  In addition, he and his staff were prepared to handle all the other flooding events in the city and responding to our customers in their time of need,” said Craig Johnson P.E., Glendale’s Water Services Director.

Arizona’s Cities & Towns Week is from Oct. 19 – Oct. 25 and has been set aside to provide citizens with important information about the employees, services and programs provided by their city. Programs like the City of Glendale’s Community Action Program (CAP).  CAP helps Glendale residents become self-sufficient while they are experiencing a financial hardship or crisis in their lives. Several of the hardest hit areas during the record storm were low-income areas. CAP Manager Becky Daniel rallied to help several families that lost all their belongings as their apartments filled with waste high water.

“One family with two disabled sons lost everything. They didn’t have clothing, beds or furniture that was salvageable,” Daniel explains. Through contacts and grants, Daniel was able to line up new beds and furniture from Glendale’s business partner, American Furniture Warehouse. Last week, Daniel armed with several volunteers from the community returned to the Glenn Apartments to help these families reclaim some of what they lost during the flood.

More information and a complete listing on Glendale’s programs and services are always available on Glendale’s website. The League of Arizona Cities and Towns is a voluntary association of all the 91 incorporated cities and towns in the state of Arizona. It provides policy and legislative advocacy and information services, along with publications and educational programs to strengthen the quality and efficiency of municipal government.

RAINWATER GARDEN WINS 2014 “CATCH THE RAIN” PHOTO CONTEST

Community Invited to See Best-in-Show Garden at Glendale’s Main Library

Glendale, Ariz. –– The City of Glendale’s Water Services Department, Conservation and Sustainability Division known for its award-winning programs took home another honor. Glendale received top ranking in the 2014 Water Resource Center’s “Catch the Rain” photo contest and the Best-in-Show prize for a picture capturing the Glendale Rain Garden in action during a summer monsoon.

Hosted by The University of Arizona Water Resources Research Center, the annual contest seeks photos telling the story of Arizona's uncommon connection to and use of rain. Glendale Water Conservation Specialist, Joanne Toms snapped the award-winning picture of the Glendale Rain Garden outside the Glendale Main Library during an Aug. 12 storm.

Glendale is one of three cities to install rainwater gardens featuring native Sonoran Desert plants through a National Fish and Wildlife Foundation grant. This past April, more than 30 FedEx volunteers “dug in” at the   Glendale Xeriscape Demonstration Garden to help create a rainwater garden. The volunteers assisted with installing rainwater harvesting basins and planting 50 native plants. Watch video of the volunteers working in the Glendale Rain Garden. The 3,500 square foot garden is located near the north entrance of the Glendale Main Library. The Water Services Department coordinated the project in partnership with the Watershed Management Group.

The summer monsoon and a 12-second video brought community and media attention to the newly installed Glendale Rain Garden. A video of rainwater streaming down a series of basins to soak the plants and soil received more than 2,800 views. Visit Glendale’s Water Conservation and Sustainability Division for more information on the award-winning programs available.

Moderator: Jeanine Jerkovic, Economic Development Administrator for Business Attraction – City of Glendale

Panelists:
Jim rounds, Senior Vice President – Elliott D. Pollack and Company
Kevin Sullivan, Senior President for Business Attraction – Arizona Commerce Authority
Anubhav Bagley, Information Services Manager – Maricopa Association of Governments
Brad Smidt, Senior Vice President for Business Development – Greater Phoenix Economic Council
Don Henninger, Publisher of the Business Journal of Phoenix introduced the keynote luncheon
speaker, Brian Mueller, President and CEO – Grand Canyon University.

Mike Schwab spoke about population being a major force behind residential economic growth which
often serves as a catalyst for commercial growth; restaurants and furniture stores, for example will build
in the area to support the residents in the area.

Economic growth, both commercial and residential, in the West Valley will likely grow where there are
freeways. Kurt Rosene told the audience that when an employee’s commute to work reaches 45
minutes, employers will start to loose employees.

Mike Schwab asked and answered “What is the number one driver for new home population growth -
population growth.” After about a four year recession “It is pretty mind boggling what we have been
through.” Those areas for the West Valley that are recovering from that recession are showing an
increase in single family home permits. Those areas have are accessible to freeways. In Glendale there
is a shortage of homes, but the homes that are in the West Valley are either rented or occupied.
“2015 things look a little brighter” for business.

Kurt Rosene in an answer to a question said, “There is nowhere you can go in the county where
commercial corridors don’t follow freeways.” Phoenix has more big-box retail than other metropolitan
area per capital in the U.S.” However, retail reinvents itself and is going toward entertainment as
“the hot thing”. “I really believe that the west side poised for a reinvention.” “Employers follow employees.”
“People will accept less wages, to be closer to home.”

Kevin Czerwinski said, “When people say West Valley, they tend to say ‘out in the West Valley’, well I
don’t like that word ‘out’ anymore; because really the West Valley, is here. It’s not out there, it’s here.”
He went on to say, “The freeway system really has impact.” Interstate 10 and the Loop 303 should be
ready for use in 90 days. The area seems to be poise for significant economic growth much like the 101.

Sub-Zero has just bought land in Goodyear Arizona for expansion. The land is next to Sub-Zero’s existing
manufacturing and distribution center. Dick’s Sporting Goods has a distribution center in the same
PV303 business park which is located at Interstate 10 and the Loop 303.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________

Don MacWilliam, admitted that some aspects of the West Valley are over built, referring mostly to the
big- box structures. “But I think over the next year and a half, you’re going to see some big thing for the West Valley.”
Infrastructure for both the land (electrical) and the roads are an important factor in successfully securing some corporate tenants.

Panel two moderator Jeannine Jerkovic, Economic Development Administrator for Business Attraction for the City of Glendale, and Jim Rounds,
Senior Vice President Elliott D. Pollack and Company at the 2014 Westmarc Economic Development Summit on Thursday, April 17, 2014.
Rounds said in his presentation that Arizona is ranked number 9 in population growth in the United States and ranks at number 11 in job growth.
“The West Valley can be a little more optimistic,” Rounds said. The best thing for local governments is to plan for the next economic slowdown.
“The key is to plan for it” and to be “physically responsible”.

Brian Mueller, President and CEO of Grand Canyon University gave the keynote address.

Bette Sharpe/Glendale Daily Planet no. 5844.
Brian Mueller, President and CEO of Grand Canyon University gave the keynote address at this year’s
Westmarc Economic Development Summit held at the Wigwam resort in Litchfield Park, Arizona.

Grand Canyon is doing something different. Grand Canyon University (GCU) is a private Christian University,
a for-profit institution and is publicly traded on the stock market. There is nothing else like it and for some it has created some waves.
Private universities depend on largely on donations for financial support and if they cannot find donors and a donor base, they will close.

_____________________________ --- SIDEBAR --- ________________________________________
Mr. Mueller has been the Chief Executive Officer of Grand Canyon, Education, Inc. since July 1, 2008.
He has been its President since September 1, 2012. He served as President of Apollo Education Group, Inc.
(formerly Apollo Group Inc.). The Apollo Education Group is the parent of University of Phoenix from
January 2006 to June 24, 2008 and he has also served as its Principal Executive Officer until June 24.
_________________________________________________________________________________________

Grand Canyon was 20 million dollars in debt in 2008. With this experience, a business plan was created
for Grand Canyon University and the search for an investor began. GCU started offering online courses.
It was the online campus that generated the revenue source and got the university profitable again.
In 2008 Grand Canyon University was listed on the stock market.

Everyone one in the room at the Westmarc Summit knew what the market was like in 2008.
The stock market was not doing well at all. The Grand Canyon listing broke the drought on Wall Street.
Investors know of the financial success of the Apollo Group and wanted to do it again.

Brian Mueller said GCU has invested millions in technology upgrades, new athletic and eating facilities,
dormitories and laboratories. Those years 2009-2010 were tough building years that set up the success the university has today.

In the last four years, 400 million dollars has been invested in the campus and it has paid off.
Graduate students using the online campus number 50,000 and 50% are studying the sciences.
GCU employees number 3,200. Today Grand Canyon is healthy and set for expansion.

Grand Canyon is investing in the kids who live in the surrounding neighborhoods as well. Some of these
kids could be the first in their family to attend university. In the long run these efforts will help to rebuild the
economy on the west side. Grand Canyon University is located between 31st and 35th Avenues on Camelback.
Grand Canyon University is across from Alhambra High School which is a “C” rated school. There are three “A”
rated elementary schools in the area but there are no junior or high school with an “A” rating.

Grand Canyon University hopes to keep the students who have gotten a good start to their education in elementary
school on track all the way to college. One was GCU is helping to accomplish this is through its tutoring programs.

As a company, GCU pays property taxes. In 2013 the university paid 1.2 million dollars in property taxes.
GCU is happy to pay property taxes. “We will continue to invest in the West Valley”, said Mueller.

Should universities have a corporation status? Some cannot get around this new concept. It worked for
Grand Canyon University. “We don’t need money anymore.” “We think what we have done is American
to the core.” There is absolutely a place for what we do. The investment model is best for the long run.

"If the Arizona State University Sun Devils played Grand Canyon University in basketball at the US Airways
Center we could advertise that as the Christians versus the devils. "We would get the valley excited about that."
Maybe it is time for educators to think like businessmen and women.

Grammy winning Rick Nestler gave a special presentation of The Almanac Trail Project - A celebration of songs that honored the original members of the Almanac Singers, including Pete Seeger.

The Almanac Trail
In the summer 1941, a musical group of labor activists known as "The Almanac Singers" climbed into a midnight blue Buick and blazed a trail across the USA, spreading the gospel of unionism and bringing folk music back to the people. The group, with members Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Lee Hays & Mill Lampell, created a new kind of topical music, using old folk melodies to tell the stories of the times. They played in union halls, on picket lines, theaters and radio shows, planting seeds wherever they went. The Almanacs’ now almost-mythical journey has become an inspiration for legions of musicians, free thinkers, and gasoline gypsies, and has paved the road for many of today’s singer/songwriters At the core of it was some of the greatest labor songs ever written, including "Union Maid", "Talking Union", and "Which Side are You On?".

This presentation will recreate the tour with songs, stories and music. Also, Members of the audience might remember him from Rawhide where he has been an actor. "I made the most money in Rawhide," he said, which is a theme park in Phoenix resembling an 1880’s town. "I played a deputy sheriff and a crooked gambler. I lived every 7-year-old’s dream. I had a .45 full of blanks. I spent those days ‘shooting’ my friends and insulting the tourists." (from: http://www.ricknestler.com/)

Last living Glendale volunteer firefighter, on his 90th birthday

Happy Birthday Charlie Bootz!

By Bette Sharpe - Glendale Daily Planet

On Sunday, March 23, 2014, the Glendale Fire Department honored Charlie Bootz, the last living Glendale volunteer firefighter, on his 90th birthday. Two fire trucks rolled up to daughter’s home in north Glendale on Sunday at 2:55 p.m. with lights flashing and sirens and horn blaring. A short presentation followed and Charlie Bootz was presented with a plaque by Councilmember Ian Hugh, Assistant Fire Chief Elio Pompa and former Glendale Fire Chief Gary Crabtree for his years of service. Members of Unit 156, B Shift, even sang Charlie happy birthday.

Jeff Bootz, Charlie’s son, said,  “My dad is loving this. He always talks about being a volunteer firefighter”.

When his fellow firefighters show up at his party in two fire trucks with lights and sirens, Charlie said, “It was really something.” He went on to say, “Ah…Its change a lot. We had fire, we had three fire trucks in 1959, one was the old Nash, and we had a Chevrolet, and a Seagrade and that was about it. But we had a lot of fun. In town, Glendale was just a mile square. We had a siren a backyard, back behind the city hall. And we would ring it and if the wind was blowing right you could hear it. Each volunteer fireman had a siren on his car and a red light.”

About the surprise he said, “I couldn’t believe it! I sure appreciate it”.

Charlie Bootz was a volunteer fireman in Glendale for 10 years. He said this about the pay, “We got big money. After a fire we got two dollars. $2.00 a fire.”

When ask what his fondest memory, Mr. Bootz answered, “...to be able to work with Chief Heathwrole. He was the fire chief then…And got to meet a lot of the old Glendale folks. As a fireman you got to meet everybody…”

“I was on the city council [1960-1964] after I was a fireman. But Ed LeGendre and I were two great buddies and we enjoyed a lot of fun.” “It didn’t stop with just fighting fires you got to know these people and enjoy their company and stuff. It was a real honor to be a volunteer fireman.”

Charlie Bootz and his family are surprised when two Glendale fire units pull up in front of the house. The arranged birthday surprise was pre-arranged, but it was a surprise and an honor for 90 year old Charlie Bootz. Sunday, March 23, 2014 was his birthday and he planned to celebrate it with family and friends.

Some background on the Glendale Fire Department.

The Glendale Fire Department began in 1912 – the same year Arizona celebrated its statehood. The all-volunteer department served the growing community through the Great Depression and the start of World War II – which brought the birth of Thunderbird Field to train civilian pilots for the Army. While this field was being built in 1941, the Army was busy working on a larger base 10 miles west of Glendale. Luke Field (now Luke Air Force Base) was named for the first pilot to receive a Medal of Honor, Lt. Frank Luke Jr.

The city hired its first fulltime paid fire chief in the 1950’s. A decade later, Glendale was able to show the need to employ its first fulltime paid firefighters. The 1990’s and new millennium brought the Loop 101, Arizona State University’s west campus, Jobing.com Arena and the University of Phoenix Stadium – and with those additions also came the need for the Glendale Fire Department to expand its personnel and its areas of expertise.

Although more than 50 years have passed since the Glendale Fire Department began paying its firefighters, volunteers still play an important role within the department. Over 100 volunteers give their time as safety educators, administration support, fire cadets - which is a program dedicated to serve the community though outreach efforts while mentoring the next generation of firefighters- and as members of the Crisis Response Team.

The Crisis Response Team (CRT) is made up of dedicated volunteers trained by the Glendale Fire Department and Maricopa Association Governments (MAG) to assist firefighters, police officers and the citizens of the West Valley during 911 calls. They specialize in being compassionate and professional during a time of need to those experiencing a crisis. Some team members have a background in behavioral health, emergency medicine, victim assistance and crisis intervention. Their main job is to provide immediate crisis intervention and referrals to victims, families and witnesses after a traumatic event, as well as to guide citizens in the right direction after the event.

PEARL HARBOR REMEMBRANCE DAY

STATE CAPITOL, PHOENIX (Dec. 06, 2014) – The attack on Pearl Harbor Dec. 7, 1941, is a day to remember and to reflect on, especially for Arizonans.

The USS Arizona and 1,177 of the 1,400 crew members on board were among the first casualties that day. When the attack was over more than 2,500 American perished.

"The lives lost that day should always be remembered and honored," said Speaker-elect Gowan. "We are blessed even today by the sacrifice of those men and women who defended our freedom during World War II."

One survivor of the attack on the USS Arizona remembers:

"Within minutes of our arrival at our battle stations, we found that all communications lines were dead. Explosions and fires were raging uncontrolled throughout the ship. Suddenly, the forward magazines exploded with a deafening roar. The ship raised several feet in the harbor waters, then slowly began to sink to the bottom of the shallow harbor, a total loss."

– excerpted from Lamar Crawford oral history.

SELLS, Ariz. – The Tohono O’odham Nation’s West Valley Resort project is moving forward and is poised to begin major construction operations. All pre-construction activities, including soil testing, archaeological surveys and related studies have been completed. A joint venture headed by Hunt Construction Group and PENTA Building Group has been assembled to construct the resort, and all key subcontractors have been retained to work on the project.

Fencing around the entire construction site is complete. Next, a $7 million grading project and related activities will begin on the site. Construction operations will continue to ramp up while the Nation awaits delivery of multimillion dollar orders for steel and concrete.

The Nation is aware that the West Valley community supports the new jobs the Resort will bring, and is working to open the gaming portion of its facility in the project’s first permanent structure, which is expected to be completed within the next 12 months.

This first phase of the facility will feature over 1,000 slots, restaurants, bar, rewards center, and cage, and will include a 1,100 space surface parking lot. Its operation will also create more than 500 new, permanent jobs in the West Valley. After the first phase is established, construction of the second phase of the $400 million project will continue, including the final, fully-developed gaming facility.

Tohono O’odham Gaming Enterprise CEO Andy Asselin said, "We are very excited to be moving forward with developing this state-of-the-art entertainment facility. We are eager to begin gaming and creating thousands of jobs and positive economic development in the West Valley."

GLENDALE PARKS UNDERGO REPAIRS FOLLOWING RAINS

Possible Parking Restrictions as Trail and Parking Lot Damage Repaired

            GLENDALE, Ariz. –

“The work will be done during the work week and will not begin before 6:30 a.m. each day,” King explains.  No trail closures are anticipated but parking lot restrictions will occur to allow for heavy equipment and repairs.

In the aftermath of the epic monsoon storms this past September, the City of Glendale Park and Recreation Division continues their work to repair parks, retentions, sporting facilities and trail systems affected by the record rain fall.

“The obvious damage like downed power lines and splintered trees has been repaired, but the massive amount of water impaired several trails and parking lots which we are now focused on,” said Glendale’s Park and Recreation Manager, Paul King. “These repairs will be labor intensive and will take months to do.”

On Monday, Dec. 1, the latest phase of repairs will begin as contractors work in 11 areas at four different parks repairing parking lots, portions of trails, fencing and other damage. The repairs will be conducted at the Grand Canal Linear Park, Sahuaro Ranch Park, Thunderbird Paseo Linear Trail and Thunderbird Conservation Park. The repairs are slated to continue through January.
“With more than three inches of rainfall on Sept. 8, several trail sections along the Grand Canal Linear Park were damaged. We will also fix the parking lot near the equestrian center that has been closed since the storm,” King said. In addition, repairs will be made to the 75th Avenue parking lot landscaping north of Camelback Rd.

Sahuaro Ranch Park will have planters and gravel slopes mended. Thunderbird Paseo Linear Trail will have work done to replace a drainage culvert on 59th Avenue. The final repair will be to the picnic area in the inner parking loop of the Thunderbird Conservation Park, from the 59th Avenue access point.

“Through this process we will provide as much advance notice as possible to users through signage at the parks and on our website about anticipated restrictions,” King said.

The repair work is estimated to be completed by mid-January. For more information on Glendale’s Parks, Recreation and Community Services page at www.glendaleaz.com/ParksandRecreation.

GLENDALE INSTALLS NEW DYNAMIC MESSAGING SIGNS

New signs will improve traffic flow in downtown area

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Glendale Transportation is installing new dynamic message signs (DMS) for traffic approaching the city’s downtown area, to alert drivers of traffic restrictions or delays that may lie ahead.

The new DMS will be located at the following spots:

·         Eastbound Glendale approaching 67th Ave

·         Westbound Glendale approaching 51st Ave

·         Northbound 59th approaching Bethany Home Rd

·         Southbound 59th approaching Northern Ave

Residents and drivers in these areas will see the structures being installed currently, with an anticipated completion in January 2015. The signs are designed to distribute information for drivers that will help alleviate traffic congestion as well as traffic delays. Messages will include train delay notifications, street closures, event-related traffic information and travel times.

Technology like these signs will assist the public traveling to events in the downtown Glendale area, like the Glendale Glitter & Glow Block Party on Jan. 10 and the Glendale Chocolate Affaire on Jan. 30-31.

American Masters Series Produces New Documentary Bing Crosby Rediscovered,
Featuring Unprecedented Access to Crosby’s Archives

By Bette Sharpe Glendale Daily Planet

Premieres nationwide Tuesday, December 2 on PBS and DVD

Bing Crosby (May 3, 1903 – October 14, 1977) was, without doubt, the most popular and influential multi-media star of the first half of the 20th century. For more than three decades, through radio, film, television and records, he reigned supreme.

This new documentary American Masters: Bing Crosby Rediscovered (check local listings) is the series’ Season 28 finale, explores the life and legend of this iconic performer, revealing a man far more complex than his public persona.

Thirty-seven years after his death, Crosby remains the most recorded performer in history with nearly 400 hit singles, and achievement no one has come close to matching.

"We naturally think of Bing a Christmastime, but with more No. 1 recordings than anyone, it is easy to overlook all of his other achievements. Thankfully, this documentary film delves deeply into all of his remarkable work, and will surprise many viewer with a unique perspective on his private life," says Michael Kanto, executive producer of American Masters.

At his prime he was singing to 50 million people per week. He made acting, dancing and singing all look like anyone could do them, because he made it all look effortless. Bing Crosby, when preforming was incredibly entertaining and his characters seem to be very easy-going kinds of guys. In his private life with his first family, things were not so easy-going. Nevertheless, at this time of year, most of us will listen to and enjoy a Bing Crosby holiday classic, "White Christmas".
