Glendale Daily Planet / KKAT-TV Sunday,
November 6th 2005
State Representative Jerry Weiers (R-12) spearheaded an effort to fight
hunger here in the Valley this year. All types and sizes of two and
four wheeled vehicles, with strong support from Hummer and Harley
owners, participated in the First Annual Hummers to Harleys for
Hunger "Rally in the Valley". Sedona Patio hosted the
event to provide food to those in need.
Rep. Weiers became concerned when informed that hurricane relief was
depleting donations to local organizations. Other Valley business
leaders have joined him to provide groups like St. Vincent de Paul and St.
Mary's/Westside the support they need to feed the underprivileged here in
the Valley.
"As communities pull together to help hurricane victims in other
states, we cannot forget about the less fortunate people right here at
home who struggle daily," Weiers said. "With this money, we help
ensure that charitable organizations can continue their vital service of
feeding those in need of basic living items."
Participants assembled at Tempe Public Library, 3500 S. Rural Road, Tempe
and the Glendale Arena, 9400 W Maryland Ave., Glendale.
Hummers, Harleys and other two- and four-wheel vehicles criss-crossed
the Valley to raise at least $100,000 for the St. Vincent de Paul Society
and St. Mary's/Westside Food Bank, allowing them to obtain more than one
million pounds of food.
More than forty businesses signed on as sponsors of the Hummers to
Harleys for Hunger event by donating cash and raffle prizes. There
were twenty rally stops where participants acquired nearly fifty (50)
chances to win prizes, and finished the event with food, fun, prizes and
live music at Glendale's Murphy Park at 58th and Glendale avenues.
There was also a silent auction held during the luncheon.
More than 100 items were donated, including a Plasma TV, $5,000 in patio
furniture, a computer, $500.00 barbecue, $500.00 gas card, IPOD's, a set
of tires, etc. Corporate sponsors included the host company Sedona
Patio, along with Valley Hummer dealers - Lund, Legends and Scottsdale,
Coca-Cola Bottling, BNSF Railway, APS, and Republic Beverage.
The cost to register as a participant was only $25.00 per person.

GLENDALE, Ariz.

turkey and football, and your favorite holiday tradition - Glendale
Glitters!
Glendale
Glitters Spectacular Weekend presented by SRP, will be number one on your holiday to-do list, with
all of the favorite features from years past, but also brand new,
entertaining elements for all ages! The kick-off to Arizona’s largest
holiday light display, with free admission and free parking, will be held
Nov. 24 and 25, from 5-10 p.m. each night in Historic Downtown Glendale.
A
brand new element to Glendale Glitters this year will be an
animated light show choreographed to traditional holiday melodies. The
light show, which will last about 15 minutes beginning at the top of each
hour, is in front of the Bank of America building on Glenn Drive, on the
north side of Murphy Park. This exciting new computerized technology will
delight all ages with the lights moving to the beat of holiday music.
The
second brand new element is the Winter Wonderland, an area
especially designed for children, located in the new Downtown Plaza on
Glenn Drive. The Winter Wonderland will include several tons of
snow, face-painting, make-and-take crafts, small rides,
stuff-your-own-animal, and various food vendors selling cotton candy,
popcorn and other treats! But a Winter Wonderland would not be
complete without Santa Claus as the star of the show! Bring your camera to
snap a photo, or Santa’s helper will take one for a small fee. And, at
the center of the magical wonderland stands a beautifully-decorated
30-foot Christmas tree.
The
traditional 30-minute lighting ceremony on Friday evening will begin at
5:30 p.m. and feature musical entertainment and a special reading of ‘Twas
the Night Before Christmas, by the 2007 Fiesta Bowl queen and her
court. The ceremony, hosted this year by KTVK Channel 3 on-air personality
Olivia Fierro, will conclude with a countdown that will turn on the
city’s dazzling 1.4 million light display for the very first time.
Musical and dance performances will continue on the both Starbucks Stages,
one located in the Amphitheater and a second stage on Glenn Drive,
throughout the evening.
City
officials encourage those attending the event to use the free shuttle
service at the First Southern Baptist Church parking lot, located off of
59th Avenue, just south of Peoria. Shuttles are constantly
running from 5 p.m. until after the event concludes at 10 p.m. Handicapped parking is
available at either the downtown City Hall garage, or the shuttle
location, which provides a handicap-accessible bus.
The
charming shops and one-of-a-kind boutiques in Historic Downtown will also
offer extended hours for the opening weekend. Stop by the Visitor Center,
at 5800 W. Glenn Dr., during event hours for shopping and dining
information. A new Guest Relations booth in the park will also help direct
visitors to event attractions, restaurants, shops and give general
information.
Other
activities include horse-drawn carriage rides, free holiday karaoke and an
extreme trampoline, a fun challenge for all ages. The Fiesta Bowl queen
and her court will also be signing autographs and posing for photos
throughout the evening on Friday.

Capt. Ken Young has been appointed chaplain of Deer Valley Composite
Squadron 302 of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP), announced Lt. Col. Ken Ramage,
squadron commander.
CAP, established in late 1941, is the official
civilian, all-volunteer auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force and performs up to
95 percent of the inland search-and-rescue missions in the United States.
The 65-year-old non-profit organization provides numerous other support
services to communities, states and the nation including homeland
security, counter-narcotic flights and humanitarian missions as well as
cadet training.
As an ordained clergyman in the
Methodist-Episcopal tradition with an Ecclesiastical Endorsement and
service as a chaplain’s assistant during his four years in the U.S.
Army, Capt. Young brings considerable experience to the chaplaincy post.
His responsibilities include providing religious support in a pluralistic
environment and services to all members of the squadron regardless of
faith persuasion or affiliation.
Active in volunteer ministries since 1980, Capt.
Young has served on short-term missionary trips to Mexico and the
Philippines and had pastoral and preaching experience in the Phoenix and
Glendale areas.
He earned a bachelor of arts degree in psychology
and a postgraduate certificate in professional counseling from Ottawa
University and a master’s of education degree in counseling from
Northern Arizona University. Capt Young has done postgraduate studies at
both Master’s Divinity School in Newburgh, Ind., and Andersonville
Theological Seminary in Camilla, Ga. He is pursuing his doctorate in
religious studies from Trinity College and Seminary in Newburgh, Ind.
The new chaplain has worked since 1989 in various
positions within the behavioral/mental-health field, currently serving
with a local non-profit organization that provides treatment programs and
community services to children, adults and families experiencing
behavioral challenges brought on by abuse, neglect, mental illness and/or
substance abuse. His professional experience includes
service in a residential treatment center, a
special-education environment, case management for seriously mentally ill
adults, and professional counseling involving youth, families and
substance-abuse issues.
A member of CAP and Deer Valley Composite
Squadron 302 since November 2003, Capt. Young lives in the Arrowhead Ranch
area of Glendale with his wife, Capt. Casey Young, who is the squadron
deputy commander for cadets. Their daughter, Christine, is a CAP cadet. In
addition to his squadron involvement, he is a fully trained member of the
Peoria Community Emergency Response Team.

squadrons in the Arizona Wing, is headquartered at Deer Valley Airport in

anniversary of service in May 2007 and was CAP’s National Squadron of

Highly decorated cadet assumes
leadership role in CAP squadron
PHOENIX, Ariz. (Sept. 28, 2006) – A highly decorated cadet has been appointed cadet commander of Deer Valley Squadron 302 of the Arizona Wing of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP).
The appointment of C/Lt. Col. Elliott Korona was announced jointly by Lt. Col. Ken Ramage, squadron commander, and Capt. Casey Young, deputy commander for the squadron’s 60-member cadet program. Deer Valley Composite Squadron 302, one of 23 squadrons in the Arizona Wing, is headquartered at Deer Valley Airport in north Phoenix.
A highly decorated cadet, C/Lt. Col. Korona, a resident of Gold Canyon in the far east Valley of the metropolitan Phoenix area, is a junior majoring in global security and intelligence studies and minoring in defense studies at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Ariz. He succeeds C/Maj. Kyle DeWitt, who has received a full scholarship to attend Grand Canyon University prior to being commissioned in four years as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army.
“The appointment of C/Lt. Col. Korona ensures the squadron’s continuity of excellent leadership in the post of cadet commander,” Capt. Young said.

His ratings include cadet solo pilot, ground-team member and ground-team leader.
C/Lt. Col. Korona is the Southwest Region representative and vice chair of the National Cadet Advisory Council and past chair of the Cadet Advisory Council for the Arizona Wing. He is a member of the Southwest Region Drill Team that won the CAP National Cadet Competition earlier this year. He has numerous other recognitions from the New Jersey Wing.
CAP, the official civilian volunteer auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, is open to adults (CAP officers) 18 and older as well as cadets 12 to 21. Many of the CAP officers are pilots or former members of the military although such experience is not required for membership. A composite squadron has both CAP officers and cadets.

It provides numerous other support services to communities, states and the nation including homeland security, counter-narcotic flights and humanitarian missions as well as cadet training.
The cadet program commanded by C/Lt. Col. Korona emphasizes aerospace education, moral leadership and emergency-services training as the cadets promote through the ranks.
Deer Valley Composite Squadron 302 will observe its 50th anniversary of service in May 2007 and was CAP’s National Squadron of Distinction in 2005. Get Ready for the
Launch of a New Season of Glendale’s Live at the Library
GLENDALE,
Ariz.
– As surely as leaves change color and drop off the trees in the fall,
Glendale’s Live at the Library will be starting a new season in October.
The auditorium of Glendale Main Library, 5959 W. Brown St., will be the
site for 28 performances, running on Thursdays, from October-April, with
the free performances beginning at 7 p.m. Look for balladeers, Latin music
and dance, bell ringers, Celtic music, jazz, poetry, reggae, western and
blue grass music, boogie-woogie, and Native American flute, just to name a
few.
Scheduled to appear in
October:
·
Oct. 5 – “Hank
Cramer with Malcolm Harris.” With a selection of Celtic and songs of the
British Isles, frequent Glendale Coffeehouse performer Malcolm Harris will
open the evening performance. His rollicking songs will set the scene for
traveling folksinger Hank Cramer, who will be making his first appearance
at Live at the Library. Cramer, a Washington state resident, is best known
for his booming bass voice, accompanied by a vintage flat-top guitar and
wry sense of humor. His repertoire is a mix of original, traditional and
contemporary folk songs. Most of his songs tell the stories of cowboys,
sailors, soldiers, miners, adventurers, and just plain drifters. That fits
with Cramer’s life story—he has been an underground miner, a
professional soldier, a shanty-man on a square-rigged sailing ship, a
wrangler for a high-country outfitter and a world traveler. Those
experiences make his music ring with special authenticity.

 ·
Oct. 12 –
“Opendance with Nosotrosound.” Immerse yourself in Latin American
culture and surround yourself in an atmosphere of natural sounds created
by simple but ingenious musical instruments.
Opendance dance company and Nosotrosound music ensemble bring folk music
and popular dancing from Central and South America. Experience examples of
dances and music from Ecuador, Peru, Cuba, Chile, Colombia, Argentina and
Mexico. This program is funded by a grant from the Glendale Arts
Commission, which is also funding future westside appearances of Opendance
and Nosotrosound at the Valley West Senior Center, 8561 N. 61st
St., on Nov. 7 at 11 a.m. and at the Glendale Adult Center, 5970 W. Brown
St., on Feb. 28, 2007, at 1 p.m.
·
Oct. 19 –
“D-Squared.” The folk harp, guitar duo of Don Charles and Deb Gessner
create a tonal fabric as rich and varied as the Southwestern landscape.
Their original songs and tunes are born of an intimate relationship to the
land and their lives in the central Arizona mountains. Rooted in
traditional fold forms, D-Squared draws upon a variety of instruments to
bring new life contemporary folk music. They regularly tour the U.S. and
Canada, performing in concert and festival settings.

·
Oct. 26 – “An
Evening with Edgar Allan Poe & Other Tales, with David and Robert
Chorlton.” Get into the Halloween mood with a walk on the dark side with
poet/narrator David Chorlton and his violinist wife Roberta. Born in
Austria, Robert has a heightened interest in Central European writing. His
own poetry has appeared in many literary magazines in print and online. He
has published a long list of chapbooks (short collections), including five
winners of national competitions. Roberta, an Arizona native, has a
Masters of Music, and studied at Arizona State University, the Peabody
Conservatory in Baltimore, as well as the Hochschule fuer Musik in Vienna,
where they met. She formerly
played with the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra and the New Orleans
Philharmonic. She currently freelances and teaches strings for the Gilbert
Unified School District. Roberta’s improvisational skills on the violin
make her collaborations with Robert a memorable experience.

GLENDALE
DESIGNATED AS A
PRESERVE AMERICA COMMUNITY
GLENDALE,
Ariz.- The National Advisory Council for Historic Preservation recently
designated Glendale as a Preserve America community.
Glendale
submitted the Catlin Court Historic District Heritage Fund grant project,
the city’s partnerships with the Catlin Court Neighborhood Association,
the Glendale Arizona Historical Society and the Historic Preservation
Commission as evidence of Glendale’s commitment to protect and celebrate
its heritage.
Preserve
America communities receive White House recognition through Laura Bush’s
office for protection and celebration of their heritage, use of their
historic assets for economic development and community revitalization, and
encouragement for people to experience and appreciate local historic
resources through education and heritage tourism programs.
“The
preservation and enjoyment of your historical and cultural resources
celebrate an important part of our nation’s heritage,” states Honorary
Chair of Preserve America Laura Bush. “You honor our nation’s past and
inspire and educate for the future.”
There
are approximately 400 communities in America that have Preserve America
designation. Other Arizona communities that have designation are Prescott,
Springerville, Williams, the White Mountain Apache Tribe, and Yuma.

PARKS & RECREATION
RECEIVES
AWARDS AT STATE CONFERENCE
GLENDALE, Ariz. – The
Glendale Parks and Recreation Department received two awards at the 2006
Arizona Parks and Recreation Association (APRA) state conference.
The 2006 Community/Neighborhood Special Event Award went to the
department’s Touch A Truck event, and the Rose Lane Aquatics Center
received the 2006 Outstanding Facility Award.
The Touch A Truck event is the only
event of its kind in the West Valley.
It offered visitors a rare opportunity to climb aboard, touch,
interact with and learn about big trucks.
Over 20 organizations provided large trucks, heavy equipment and
specialty vehicles for the nearly 2,000 attendees.
The free event received the award for its ability to educate
children about the dangers in playing at construction sites and
emphasizing the need for adults to supervise children carefully around
those environments through a recreational, social family event.
The Rose Lane Aquatics Center replaced
the Rose Lane Pool,
originally built in 1966. The
new family-friendly facility boasts a beach-entry pool with play
structures, spray pad, in-pool misting systems, water slide, six-lane
competitive pool and diving tank. The
surrounding the pools are spacious decks and shaded grassy terrain
allowing residents to relax and take a break from the water features.
In just its first month of operation, the center accommodated
nearly 30,000 recreational swimmers.

Northern Horizon Park is now open!
Park
Amenities
- Three ramadas
- Open turf
- Dog park
- Bicycle safety stations
- Well designed landscaping
- 30-space parking lot
- Public safety themed playground
- (ADA Accessible)

The ground under much of the play
equipment is covered with soft
organic wood material.
This is used in place of the sand as this feels softer
to fall into, but unlike sand, you may roll wheel chairs over
the surface easily. This is a main component to Public
safety themed playgrounds (ADA Accessible).

Dog
Park
We welcome you to bring your dog on a leash and enjoy most of
our city parks. However, we know most dogs love
to run free and most dog owners would like to provide their
pets with the opportunity to do so. Glendale dog owners now
have another place to let their dogs run around leash-free. In
addition to the large fenced-in play area, the park has a play
area for small dogs, water fountains and waste stations. The
new park means a healthier lifestyle for our furry friends and
provides a great area for dog owners to socialize. The unique
design of the dog park allows parks staff to have one large
section of the dog park open while allowing the other section
to recuperate from previous uses. This allows for a seamless
transition during maintenance and fewer dog park closures.

Bicycle
Safety Stations
Another feature the park is a bicycle safety component
focusing on teaching young cyclists, ages 5 to 14, bicycle
safety, but everyone will benefit from going through the
program. Bicycle safety stations are located throughout the
park to offer a self-paced bicycle safety clinic. The stations
feature bike safety inspections and safety information about
the rules of the road. Much of these features are interactive
and provide valuable information for safe bike riding,
including a miniature "rock dodge" course set up in
the park. Other information includes bike maintenance and
helmet fitting. Click
here for the station information and map. (pdf)
Park
Facts
Phase I is 12 acres
Nearly 1,000 shrubs planted
Over 200 trees planted
