César E. Chávez  -  2012

Happy Birthday César E. Chávez!

Chavez is best known as the founder of the United Farm Workers of America, AFL-CIO (UFW). He was a tireless advocate for nonviolent social change, and dedicated his life to working in service of others. Sen. Robert F. Kennedy called Chavez "one of the heroic figures of our time."

A second-generation American, Chavez was born on March 31, 1927, near his family's farm in Yuma, Ariz. At age 10, his family became migrant farm workers after losing their farm in the Great Depression. Throughout his youth and into his adulthood, Chavez migrated across the Southwest laboring in the fields and vineyards, where he was exposed to the hardships and injustices of farm worker life.

After achieving only an eighth-grade education, Chavez left school to work in the fields full-time to support his family. He attended more than 30 elementary and middle schools. Although his formal education ended then, he possessed an insatiable intellectual curiosity, and was self-taught in many fields and well read throughout his life.

Chavez joined the U.S. Navy in 1946 and served in the Western Pacific in the aftermath of World War II.

Chavez's life as a community organizer began in 1952 when he joined the Community Service Organization (CSO), a prominent Latino civil rights group. While with the CSO, Chavez coordinated voter registration drives and conducted campaigns against racial and economic discrimination primarily in urban areas. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Chavez served as CSO's national director.

In 1962 Chavez resigned from the CSO to establish the National Farm Workers Association, which later became the United Farm Workers of America.

For more then three decades Chavez led the first successful farm workers union in American history, achieving dignity, respect, fair wages, medical coverage, pension benefits and humane living conditions as well as countless other rights and protections for hundreds of thousands of farm workers. His union's efforts brought about the passage of the groundbreaking 1975 California Agricultural Labor Relations Act to protect farm workers. Today, it remains the only law in the nation that protects the right of farm workers to unionize.

Chavez passed away on April 23, 1993, in San Luis, Ariz.

The stamp image was painted by freelance illustrator Robert Rodriguez and features a portrait of Chavez against a background of empty grape fields. Rodriguez based the portrait on a 1976 photograph of Chavez taken by Bob Fitch and provided to the Postal Service by the Cesar E. Chavez Foundation in Los Angeles, Calif. Rodriguez based the background on an aerial photograph taken in the 1960s by Ted Streshinsky. (USPS)

Glendale, AZ - Jazz and Blues Festival - 2012

Carmen Lundy

On the jazz stage rounding out the entertainment Saturday evening, from 8:30-10 p.m., is Carmen Lundy. Most recently recording her eighth album, according to The New York Daily News, “Lundy is one of those rare performers who does it all: She sings, plays multiple instruments, and…except for one song — “A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square” — Lundy penned all of the tunes on her latest project, now No. 5 on the JazzWeek radio charts. She composed several numbers on guitar, a new instrument among the many she plays.”

Glendale, AZ - Jazz and Blues Festival - 2012

Kenny Garrett Quartet

The jazz headliner for Sunday night, 4:30-6 p.m., will be the Kenny Garrett Quartet. Garrett, a Grammy-Award winning American post bop jazz saxophonist and flautist, gained fame as a member of the Duke Ellington Orchestra, and Miles Davis' band as a young man. His prolific career has produced nearly 20 albums.

Glendale, AZ - Jazz and Blues Festival - 2012

Bernard Allison Group

The blues performer rocking the stage on Saturday night will be the Bernard Allison Group, from 8:30-10 p.m. Legacy Bernard Allison totes the same smokin’ six string shooter that his late father Luther Allison assaulted the blues with; and he is blessed with his father’s soulful voice, spiritual devotion and a musical freedom, which experiments with the blues.

Billboard  Magazine says  “Bernard Allison’s debut album for Tone Cool, 2000′s Across the Water, was a U.S. breakout release for the talented guitarist. With Storms of Life, Allison shows that the powerhouse blues/rock sound that characterized its predecessor is an integral part of his repertoire…Allison is in top form; expect career-defining albums from him for the rest of the decade.”

Glendale, AZ - Jazz and Blues Festival - 2012

Marcia Ball

On Sunday evening, Marcia Ball takes the stage from 4:30-6 p.m. showing off her roadhouse-rhythm-and-blues-party style. Working" onstage at GCC April 13 -21

Glendale Community College's Theatre Arts Department teams up with GCC dance company VERVE to present six high-energy, heart-tugging performances of the musical "Working" April 13 – 21 in the college's Performing Arts Center, 6000 W. Olive Ave. Performances begin at 7:30 p.m. April 13, 14, 19 – 21 and also at 2 p.m. April 19. General admission tickets are $8 at the box office and $5 for students, faculty, staff, alumni and seniors 55+ with valid ID. Info: David.Seitz@gcmail.maricopa.edu.

Nominated for seven Tony Awards, "Working" is based on the book by Studs Terkel and adapted by Stephen Schwartz and Nina Faso. Songs are by Craig Carnelia, Micki Grant, Mary Rodgers, Susan Birkenhead, Stephen Schwartz and James Taylor. A homemaker, a college student, a waitress, a teacher, a retiree and others reflect on the age-old question, "So what do you do?"

While many institutions have cut back on performing arts programs, GCC continues to offer artistic training and resulting performances to the community. The GCC performing arts program offers associates degrees in dance, theatre arts, audio production and music business.

"GCC supports the performing arts programs," says Director David Seitz, performing arts faculty. "We have lots of opportunity here."

He adds that as community support and appreciation has grown, so has GCC's vision. The Performing Arts Department is looking to the future to implement an electronic box office system to allow patrons the convenience of online, early ticket purchasing. Currently tickets can be purchased only at the GCC Performing Arts Center box office one hour prior to each performance

Robert Ortega is Glendale Public Library’s

Employee of the Quarter

Glendale, Ariz. – Robert Ortega, Circulation Page at the Glendale Main Library, was recently selected as the library’s Employee of the Quarter. Lorna Rivas, Public Service Assistance, nominated her co-worker because of his teamwork and performance.

In her nomination letter Rivas stated that Ortega is conscientious and kindhearted toward fellow employees, getting things done in a timely, organized and proficient manner.

“Robert demonstrates a quiet, easy resolve of teamwork and performance,” says Rivas. “He never complains about anything, is punctual, and is an excellent team member that we all appreciate. Robert may be a quiet man, but he’s certainly not an invisible man.”

Ortega’s supervisor, Page Supervisor Patsy Kavanaugh, adds that Ortega is a truly exceptional young man who has been an integral member of the library staff since June, 2005.

“During this time he has displayed great initiative and an extremely positive attitude,” says Kavanaugh. “Robert takes pride in balancing his job with his education and has developed valued relationships with his family, friends and co-workers. I am so fortunate and proud to call Robert one of my Pages.”
