Glendale Chocolate Affaire

This year is the 17th Annual Glendale Chocolate Affaire. Chocolate, romance authors, and the arts come to the downtown
Glendale. Glendale's very
own candy maker, Cerreta Candy Company is a major
sponsor for this Valley wide favorite. .
There is something for everyone, really.
A variety of rides for the kids that
includes the human-hamster-ball.
Romance authors hosting workshops and signing their books and all
kinds of chocolate; of course. This
is the second year the Glendale Arts Commission will help coordinate the
Plein (or open) Air competition which takes place from on Saturday. Artists cannot use photographs.
All painting is done live and outside.
Last year's competition drew about 25 artist for this year's
challenge almost has seem a dramatic increase in participation.

Food and music are part of the three-day event's
offerings. One of the new
foods available this year are chocolate potato chips. The salty and sweet crunch was to much to resist for some.
There was just too much to see and do in one day.
Future writers attended workshop presented by awarding winning
authors. A few steps away in
the Fountain 'Terrace area of the Civic Center, cooking demonstrations
were held featuring—chocolate.
Offerings Glendale Chocolate Affaire continues on Sunday from noon
to 5 p.m.

Romance author Erin Quinn and Glendale resident,
Dorlisa Dvorak have something in common, the romance novel.
Erin Quinn's stories have an element of time travel to them.
Dorlisa has attended the romance authors portion of
the Glendale Chocolate Affaire since is began. She said she, “wouldn't miss it”.
Erin
Quinn has a new book due out this March, Haunting
Desire, which is the third in the series.
The fourth title in the series is due to be released in November
2011.

Cerreta Candy Company tours are free with free shuttles taking
visitors right to the candy company's door.
The shuttle stops taking attendees 30 minutes prior to even
closing, however, the shuttle will continue to return guests to the event
until all are returned. No one really wants to spend the night in a candy factory, do
they? (The correct answer is
no.)

the first of the First Saturdays in downtown Glendale.
ACTC encourages and facilitates the planting and care of trees in
Arizona. According to ACTC,
trees help to grow communities.

On February
4-6, 2011 Historic Downtown Glendale will be a chocolate lover’s
paradise.
The 16th
Annual Glendale Chocolate Affaire is a 3-day event featuring more
than 30 chocolatiers and other vendors in Murphy Park. In our
ongoing effort to expand our event footprint in the downtown area,
58th Dr and 58th Ave between Palmaire and Myrtle and Palmaire
between 58th Dr and 58th Ave will be programmed with kid’s
activities.
The city
produced event is sponsored by Arizona’s famous candy maker,
Cerreta’s. The candy factory will offer tours all weekend. The
event features not only a celebration of chocolate, but also
romance.
The Glendale
Chocolate Affaire has become the largest gathering of national
romance novelists in the Southwest.
This
symposium of literary romantics offers fans the opportunity to get
up close and personal with authors, as well as the chance to attend
free writing workshops given by the experts. The romance author
activities will take place in the Downtown Plaza, east of The Bead
Museum. As part of this year’s festival the Civic Center’s new
caterer, AZ Catering, will be offering cooking demonstrations on
Saturday, 2/5 inside the facility –visit glendaleaz.com/events for

Chocoholics
Unite In Downtown Glendale February 4-6
The
weekend before Valentine’s Day, Feb. 4-6, is a delicious
delight for the senses as the Glendale Chocolate Affaire takes
over downtown Glendale to create a chocolate-lover’s dream!
Chocolate purveyors from Arizona and
around the nation gather in Glendale for this award-winning
festival, which celebrates not only chocolate, but romance and
the arts as well. Chocolate confections will include
everything from chocolate molé barbecue and deep-fried
chocolate ice cream to chocolate bacon candy bars and
chocolate cheesecake cones. These are in addition to the
ever-popular standards such as rich chocolate truffles and
gigantic chocolate strawberries.
The Chocolate Affaire is sponsored by
Arizona’s famous candy makers, Cerreta’s. The candy
factory will offer tours all weekend, so visitors can get a
behind-the-scenes look at how the chocolatier creates
everyone’s favorite candy.
In addition, the festival has become
the largest gathering of national romance novelists in the
Southwest. This symposium of literary romantics offers fans
the opportunity to get up close and personal with authors, as
well as the chance to attend free writing workshops given by
the experts.
Families with children will enjoy
myriad activities, including hands-on arts and crafts,
face-painting and a rock-climbing wall.
Horse-drawn carriage rides will be
available throughout the weekend to take couples or families
on a scenic, charming ride through the historic Catlin Court
district.
For the second year in a row, the
Glendale Arts Commission will coordinate an on-site Plein Air
competition that will take place on Saturday, Feb. 5. The
competition will be open to any artist 18 years of age or
older, who paints using the Plein (open) air technique in oil,
watercolor, acrylic or pastel. Plein air paintings are created
outdoors, from real life; both painter and subject must be
outdoors and photographs can not be used. At the 2010
Chocolate Affaire, 25 artists entered more than 70 paintings,
with top prizes becoming part of the city’s permanent public
art collection. This year, participation is expected to
triple.
The festival is free. This year for
the first time, event attendees will have the option of paying
for preferred parking in the two downtown garages, located at
City Hall, at 59th and Glendale avenues and the Bank of
America building at 58th Drive and Glenn Drive. The preferred
parking fee is $10. Surface street parking in the area will
remain free.
Event hours are Friday 5 - 10 p.m.,
Saturday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday noon to 5 p.m. The
event is located in the heart of Historic Downtown Glendale,
in Murphy Park, located at 58th and Glendale avenues.
The Glendale Chocolate Affaire was
named one of the Top 100 Events in North America by the
Washington Post, the Seattle Times and the American Bus
Association. The event also was bestowed with the 2003
Governor’s Tourism Award for the Best Special Event in
Arizona.
The Glendale Chocolate Affaire is
sponsored by Cerreta’s Candy Company, Kokopelli Winery, ABC
15, The Arizona Republic, YooHoo, KMLE, KOOL and JAMZ, Nissan,
Commerical NV, Sedona Pines and Pacific Monarch.

Glendale’s
2011 Plein Air Competition at Glendale Chocolate Affaire
The city’s Library & Arts Department, in collaboration
with the Marketing/Communications Department, will sponsor the
2011 Plein Air Painting Event at the Glendale Chocolate
Affaire. It will be held during the popular festival in
downtown Glendale, on Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011. We invite
artists to participate. Pictured to the left is the 2010 Best

Proudly presents:
The 2011 Glendale Plein Air Painting Event
What: Please join us for the 2011 Glendale Plein Air Painting Event. The event is open to any artist who
paints using the Plein Air technique in oil, watercolor, acrylic, or pastel. Plein Air (open air) paintings are
executed outdoors from real life, as opposed to being painted from photographs in a studio. Both painter
and subject must be outdoors, and photographs are NOT used.
When: Saturday, February 5, 2011, 8:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
Where: In Beautiful, Historic Downtown Glendale, Arizona
This event is hosted by the City of Glendale Arts Commission in conjunction with Special Events and the
Annual Glendale Chocolate Affaire, which takes place from February 4 – February 6, 2011.
RULES FOR THE EVENT:
1. Painting Area: An artist may paint any subject or scene outdoors that he/she chooses, as long as
it is within the boundaries of the City of Glendale. (Please see attached map, along with a list of
potential sites.)
2. All canvas/panels/paper must be stamped PRIOR to painting. NO unstamped art will be
accepted. An unlimited number may be stamped but no more than two (2) can be submitted for
the competition.
3. Painting Time Period: Each work of art must be started and completed "en plein air" on
Saturday, February 5, 2011, during the event times stated.
4. The event will be held rain or shine, so come prepared.
5. Only the following mediums will be accepted: oils, acrylics, watercolors and pastels.
6. Size of unframed artwork is not to exceed 16" x 20".
7. All artists must be 18 years of age and older.
8. Artists must provide their own materials and a sturdy easel(s) for display during the
judging process. Artists will be required to remain with their easels during this time and
will be responsible for the safety of their paintings. The Glendale Arts Commission/City of
Glendale shall assume no responsibility for loss or damage to any work, display or person during
this event.
REQUIRED REGISTRATION:
All artists must register and have their canvas, panels or paper stamped prior to any work being done.
(No exceptions). Registration will be set up from 8:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at the Promenade on
Palmaire, located in Downtown Glendale at 5835 W Palmaire Ave., Glendale, AZ 85301.
SUBMISSION and JURY PROCESS:
1. Paintings and a signed contest entry form should be delivered to the judging site by 3:30 p.m. on
Saturday, February 5, 2011. There will no late entries accepted, so plan your return trip
accordingly.
2. Each artist may submit no more than two (2) finished paintings for the competition.
3. Each finished painting submitted should be signed on the front.
4. The "Plein Air Stamp" provided at registration must be visible on the back of each painting at the
time of submission. All paintings must be appropriately framed, mounted and securely wired for
hanging during the judging process. We reserve the right to refuse any painting improperly
framed or wired (i.e., no unframed wrapped canvases, stained mats, alligator hangers, etc.).
5. All judging is final during the competition.
AWARDS:
Award categories are Purchase Awards and will be accessioned into the City of Glendale’s
permanent collection upon completion of the event:
.. Best of Show. One (1) $1,000.00 Best of Show award will be presented.
.. Portraiture. One (1) $500.00 award will be presented.
.. Landscape/Cityscape. One (1) $500.00 award will be presented.
.. Architecture. One (1) $500.00 award will be presented.
.. Anima/Fauna. One (1) $500.00 award will be presented.
.. Abstract. One (1) $500.00 award will be presented.
Awards will not be presented on the day of the event. All funds will be disbursed within
30 days.
