Second
Annual Summer Safety Fair
In
partnership with several City of Glendale Departments
(Police, Fire, Transportation, Park and Recreation, Code
Enforcement) Valley Metro, and Classic Rock 100.7 KSLX
radio, the Citizens’ Police Academy Alumni of Glendale (CPAAG)
is presented the 2nd annual CPAAG Summer Safety Fair,
sponsored by Target. MORE
ARTICLE AND MANY MANY PHOTOS!>
This
year’s fair was held Saturday, March 20 at the Target
located on the southwest corner at 43rd and Peoria in
Glendale. This year’s event had in an expanded area of
the parking lot over last year’s fair and allowed more
room for more families. Safety is something we all need to
practice.

Photo 5: Always have a planned escape route, just in case
there is a fire. Res Cue or LoriBeth Bykerk (top left) and Firefighter Joe (Duane
Kaitschuck) discuss fire safety.
Spring
is here and summer is coming which means that more of us
will be spending more time outside. Kids (ages 5-13)
Saturday’s could be properly fitted for a bike helmet,
which they got to keep. After all it did take a little
time and some patience to be fitted. Bikes could be
inspected to see if rider and bike were a good fit. The
bike rodeo provided a fun vehicle to learn about what to
do when a bike rider is in traffic. Volunteers held up
large photographs of cars, so no one was literally out in
traffic. Riders had to watch out though.
Volunteers
from the Glendale Fire Department helped young children
with palm printing or whole hand printing. Fingerprinting
children is an established way of identifying young kids.
Young kids are growing, as we all know, so it is a good
idea to make a new print of their fingerprints once a
year.
Arizona
probably has the most boat ownership, per capita, than any
other state. The closest lake to Glendale is Lake
Pleasant, which is about 33 miles away. Don’t think you
can just buy a boat and get in and “drive” it on the
water and that’s that. A little training and information
may make a big difference in your boating experience.
A
simple but important safety tip to start a boat trip is to
insure that each person in the boat has the right PFD
(personal floatation device) for the water—open and/or
rough water, inland waters—should be in good condition
and easily available. Each PFD must fit properly. This is
very important for infants and kids. PFDs need to be worn
if they are to work at all. Please follow the link to the
Arizona Game and Fish Department web site listed below;
there is more information you need to know. Another
resource is the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. Their web
information is listed below also.
If you
are new to boating or have not been on the water for a
while, you might want to take a safe boating class. More
information about boating safety can be found at these web
sites hint, hint.
A
little preparation will make your summer activities be
less problematic and more fun. The information they
provide, could and might save a life.
Some
of the big factors that cause accidents are drinking while
driving, distractions—talking on cell phones, texting
while driving (cars or boats). Even a passenger family or
friends can distract the drive enough to cause a problem.
Ask the Hinds family about their campaign “Red Means
Stop” about red light runners, you will hear first hand
the what tragedies traffic accidents can cause.
Red
Means Stop Traffic Safety Alliance is an organization
started by three families late in 1998. Each family lost a
child because someone ran a red light. “The founding
Families, Hinds, Marquis and Philippi came together to
from the Coalition, dedicated to their children, Jennifer
Hinds, Sam Marquis and Krystal Philippi.” The mission of
the alliance is to raise “public awareness of the
consequences of motor vehicle crashes that injure and kill
drivers, their passengers and pedestrians”.
What
if your house is on fire? More gloom if you are NOT
prepared. Glendale Fire Department provided safety
information Saturday. The safety fair was educational and
fun for kids, but for the adults, the information is a
reminder that safety needs to be practiced.

The Citizens’ Police Academy Alumni
of Glendale held its 2nd annual Wine Tasting and Silent
Auction on June 12th. It was hosted again this year by Fleming’s
Prime Steakhouse and Wine Bar at 9712 W. Northern Ave. in
Peoria. The attendees were served an array of Fleming’s
fantastic appetizers and sampled a number of wines donated by
Fleming’s. There were nearly 30 silent auction items of
various values covering a wide variety of interests from the
traveler, to the sports enthusiast and everything in between.
Over $3500 was raised!
The CPAAG would like to thank our
hosts and all those that came out to support our mission. All
funds raised will be used to improve police services, public
safety and community education.

force helping out with logistics and passing out water.
Mayor Elaine Scruggs stated: "The
Citizens Police Academy Alumni of Glendale (CPAAG) did an
outstanding job of presenting their first ever Summer Safety
Fair. The event was wonderfully organized, provided a wide

We asked Glendale Police Chief
Steve Conrad about the activities He told us' "This
was a first for the Citizens Police Academy Alumni of
Glendale. This group, which is a 501c3 non-profit
corporation, is made up of graduates of the Glendale Police
Department's Citizens Police Academy." He
continued, "This group organized the entire event
and invited our department, the Glendale Fire Department and
Phoenix Police Department to participate ... I'm very proud
of them!"

Safety Fairs are not just an event
for adults! The best way to teach safety is to start with
children when they are young, To this end, the kids who came
to the event got a chance to experience a great bike rodeo,
which the Foothills Patrol Division CAT personnel put
together with the help of a couple of patrol officers from
the Foothills Neighborhood Response Squad.
Nikki Colletti, CPAAG President,
explains, "Education is also part of our mission. It
is one way to assist officers and to create a safer
community. We were very pleased to present this free Safety
Fair to the public in partnership with our generous
sponsors. "
She continues, "Many thanks
to Target for allowing us to use their location for easy
access as well as their donations to Victims' Assistance. We
also want to recognize all the agencies that participated.
We are very grateful for their contributions and look
forward to working with them again next year!"

The alumni group used the fair to
raise some funding to benefit the West Valley Advocacy
Center (WVAC), which among other things, provides support to
victims of crime in a safe and comfortable setting. During
the event, donations of new children’s clothing and new
small toys were accepted to benefit WVAC also.

One item that is always a hit at
any event is the legendary Glendale Fire Department Fire

Firefighter Daniel Valenzuela, PIO
for the Glendale Fire Department tells us."The
Glendale Fire Department is appreciative of the opportunity
to be a part of this event. We were able to teach families
of the importance of home escape planning with the Glendale
Fire Department's Safety Trailer." He
continued, "We also gave demonstrations on
continuous chest compressions (CCC). We had a great
time,"

The 'Safety House' trailer, or 'smoke trailer,' creates
non-toxic smoke to help educate families on the importance
of escape planning. Once in the trailer, families get some
classroom time and are encouraged to stay low as they escape
the smoke and flames.

After the event, we asked Chief
Conrad what he thought was a 'unique' item at the fair, he
smiled. "They have a small police car (child size -
kind of like a go-cart) and a small police motorcycle. They
were quite a sight!"
