Hospital
food at Banner Thunderbird
brings in national culinary awards
(BH)
– If the hearing the words “hospital food,” conjures
up visions of green Jell-O and mystery meat, then you haven’t
been to Banner Thunderbird Medical Center.
Banner
Thunderbird’s Food and Nutrition Services Director Julie Spelman
and Executive Chef Jamie Palenque brought home the silver medal in
the 2008 Culinary Competition staged by the National Society for
Healthcare Food Service Management. The event was sponsored by
Tyson Foods.
The
pair won the award in September for their original entry
Rainforest Pork Roulade with Mint-Cashew Pesto topped with Acaci
Foam and Sweet Plantains – a dish that pairs succulent, savory
pork with sweet plantains and is served on a banana leaf.
Spelman
and Palenque were awarded a bronze medal during the 2007
competition for the original recipe Almond-crusted Chicken with
Pomegranate Sauce. They say cooking in a hospital is like “being
creative with handcuffs on” due to dietary restriction
requirements for many patients but they manage to prepare tasty
and healthy creations each day.
“Hospital
food isn’t what it used to be,” said Chef Palenque who was
born and raised in Bolivia and has studied at The Culinary
Institute of America, Greystone in St. Helena, California.
During
both years of the competition 28-35 recipes were submitted and
narrowed down by a group of chefs and judges to only five
contestants. The judges do not know who has submitted each recipe
when they narrow down the competition. Julie and Jaime then
had to prepare the recipe for 6 in front of hundreds of
professionals in 75 minutes.
“I
feel very fortunate that Jaime and I were chosen to compete both
years,” Spelman said. “People are surprised but you can
get flavor into hospital food.”

Tom Shannon began his career with the
Glendale Fire Department in 1988, hiring on as a firefighter. He

Banner Thunderbird Medical
Center is first certified
Level III NICU, Women and
Infant Services in West Valley
GLENDALE, Ariz. (Nov. 11, 2008) –
The West Valley’s most critically ill
mothers and newborns will no longer have to make the long trip
downtown to receive the highest level of medical care. The Arizona
Perinatal Trust this week designated Banner Thunderbird Medical
Center’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Women and
Infant Services as a Level III facility
– the only Level III facility in the West Valley.
The Level
III designation is granted to facilities that demonstrate the most
advanced level of care, the highest degree of collaboration among
practitioners, and that have systems in place to handle highly
complex patients.
Barbara Cabrera, Interim
Director of Pediatrics and the NICU at Banner Thunderbird, said
the achievement of Level III is something Banner Thunderbird
Medical Center has done to keep pace with the tremendous growth in
the West Valley.
“In developing the Level III program,
we looked at the community and the needs of the community,”
Cabrera said. “The higher designation allows our facility to
provide services previously unavailable in the West Valley and
helps families stay closer to home, avoiding the drive downtown
for higher level NICU and Women and Infant Services.”
Last year nearly 5,000
babies were delivered at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center and
those numbers, including high risk pregnancies, are only expected
to increase. Women
and Infant Services Director Teresa Buchda said earning the Level
III designation is all about what the hospital staff and
physicians can do for patients. They’ve instituted programs and
protocol that provide care for the woman’s entire journey –
from pre-conception testing to postpartum depression screenings.
“Banner Thunderbird started out as a
community hospital and with the Level III certification we’re
going back to our roots,” Buchda said. “We’ve added
wonderful programs that will save patients a lot of time and
stress by keeping them within their community all while receiving
the very best care.”
Banner Thunderbird CEO Tom
Dickson congratulated staff on attaining the Level III designation
calling the team working on the certification “phenomenal.”
“Earning a level three
designation is the culmination of extensive preparation, program
development, construction and years of hard work,” Dickson said.

RAMADA AND PICNIC AREA
CONSTRUCTION
TO BEGIN AT WESTERN AREA
REGIONAL PARK
(COG) GLENDALE, Ariz.
– The City Council approved the award of bid for construction of
a ramada pavilion and picnic area amenities for the Western Area
Regional Park, at last night’s meeting.
Moving into phase three of the park’s
plan, this construction is focused in the southeast portion of the
81-acre regional park, located at 83rd Avenue and Bethany Home
Road. The construction, about 10 acres total, will entail a large
group ramada pavilion and picnic area that will accommodate
approximately 750 people. The ramada pavilion design consists of
10 individual ramadas, complete with adjoining barbeque
facilities. Also included within this project are several active
recreation components, such as three lighted sand volleyball
courts, a shaded themed playground and a tot lot. In addition to
the active recreation components, the landscape plan includes
xeriscape, with low-water-use indigenous plantmaterial, seven
acres of open turf and an information kiosk.
Currently, the park features two lighted
basketball courts, public restrooms, parking lot, open turf area,
splash pad, and a covered tot lot and playground area, which
opened in 2004. In addition, the park includes the X Court, a
dual-purpose skate and BMX court facility, which was completed in
2007.
Not only will this phase of construction
be an added benefit to the residents in the area, but it will
complete part of the regional park’s the construction will
complete the link that connects the Western Area Regional Park to
the adjacent Grand Canal Linear Park. The connection provides
enhanced access from adjacent neighborhoods and community-wide
access via a linked regional trail system.
As part of the 2002 Parks &
Recreation Master Plan, public input identified another regional
park comparable to Sahuaro Ranch Park as a priority. The public
desired to have parks linked through greenways and trails, and
develop more park land in the south and west region of the city.
Construction will begin late November,
and the project is estimated to be complete in the spring of 2009.

celebrated its sixth anniversary on Saturday, November 1st.
The celebration was held in at Papa Ed's Ice Cream Parlor in
historic downtown Glendale. CR volunteers, friends and
families were treated to free ice cream courtesy of a donation
from Papa Ed’s Ice Cream and Har-Bro West, Inc.
Papa
Ed’s Ice Cream has been a strong supporter of the volunteer team
since the parlor's inception September 2007. The ice cream
parlor formally opened on 5/10/08 and has been waiting for an
opportunity to celebrate the efforts of this special group.

West, Inc. General Contractors have been working with the
Glendale Fire Dept. Crisis Response Team for the past six months,
working side by side to provide on-site resources for fire
and disaster victims.
Glendale
Fire's Crisis Response program is primarily staffed by volunteers
and respond to calls that involve victims, trauma, and grief.
CR units are staffed with 2-3 volunteers and are stocked with
blankets, resources, water, snacks, and other times needed in a
time of crisis.
"Glendale
Fire thanks this group of special individuals for the heartfelt
contribution of their time," said Glendale Fire
Chief Mark Burdick. "Before this program existed,
firefighters would respond to fires or other tragic scenes and
will do a good job managing the scene for the benefit of those who
needed our help. Eventually our firefighters would have to get
back on the truck and wait for the next emergency. We felt there
was a gap in the service we provided. The Crisis Response program
fills that gap," Chief Burdick continued.
"The
Crisis Response program allows the Glendale Fire Department to
provide seamless customer service to those individuals and
families that we respond to, to help out," Chief
Burdick added.

Banner Thunderbird
presents: “Keeping well in Mind and Body”
GLENDALE, Ariz. (Nov. 6, 2008)
– On Monday, Nov. 24 2008, registered dietician Geri Borsom,
physical therapist Ellen Hofmann and Patti Jensen, ACSW, will
present “Keeping well in Mind and Body” as part of an
educational series for Banner Thunderbird Medical Center’s “I
Can Cope” program.
“I Can Cope” is a program
developed by the American Cancer Society and is presented in
partnership with Banner Thunderbird Medical Center that provides
education about cancer, treatment and coping skills for people
with cancer and those who love and care for them. The knowledge
and support gained from the sessions can help reduce the fear and
anxiety that often occurs with a new cancer diagnosis. “I Can
Cope” fosters understanding and encouragement from health care
professionals, people living with cancer and those who have
survived it.
This free program is offered
from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center
in Conference Room 5, located in the lower level of the hospital
near the cafeteria. For more information or to RSVP for a session,
contact Patti Jensen at (602) 865-5450.

A “Best of
Phoenix” Award Goes to
Glendale’s Foothills Branch Library
(GPL)
GLENDALE, Ariz. – Glendale
Public Library’s Foothills Branch, located at 19055 N. 57th
Ave., is the proud recipient of the Best Public Library Speaker
Series award. The designation comes in the newly published 30th
annual Phoenix New Times Best of Phoenix publication.
In bestowing the honor, the
newspaper noted the variety of programs offered at Glendale’s
northern branch. In a single month, the library hosted a live
music quartet, a class on how to speak with children about sex,
a showing of the movie “Atonement,” a psychic medium and
classes titled “Archeology for Everyone” and “Wii for
Adults.”
Foothills Branch was also recognized
for its collaboration with Midwestern University. Since the
library’s opening in 1999, the university has held monthly
seminars at the library on all types of medical concerns. Recent
topics have included a podiatrist discussing proper footwear for
safe hiking, a psychologist discussing safe ways to lose weight,
a bio-medical professor warning about the dangers of “natural
products,” and a pharmacist discussing heart disease risks and
prevention.
The award also takes notice of the
price of all of these wonderful offerings; they are free.
Librarians Sarah Herlache and Ivy
Jarvis work as a team in planning and overseeing the successful
adult program. Kathy Pastores, head of the Youth Services
Department at the branch, oversees the youth and teen
programming.

WESTMARC celebrates 16th Best of the West
Awards; pays tribute to John F. Long; Herman Orcutt honored with
Lifetime Achievement Award; Leland Peterson receives Chairman’s
Award
Thursday evening WESTMARC honored more
than 30 individuals, businesses, and projects in 8 categories as
it celebrated its 16th Annual Best of the West Awards.
Nearly 800 business and community leaders
and elected officials from throughout the valley gathered at the
Renaissance Glendale Hotel, Conference & Media Center to share
in this year’s showcasing of the West Valley’s Best of the
West.
“WESTMARC’s Best of the West
Awards is one of the Valley’s premier business events,” said
Ray Jones, Chairman of WESTMARC’s Board of Directors. “But
equally important is that it allows us to tell the story of the
West Valley and showcase all the grand things that are happening
here.”
WESTMARC received more than 80
nominations in 8 categories: Architectural Innovation; Arts,
Culture, & Entertainment; Attractions, Destinations &
Tourism; Building Business; Education; Leadership; Service to
Communities; and Sports categories. Nominees were judged and
recognized for their outstanding contributions to the image,
lifestyle and economic development in western Maricopa County –
the portion of Maricopa County west of Interstate 17. (A complete
list of award winners and honorable mentions is listed below.)
“Our awards annually recognize what the
Best of the West in the West Valley is truly all about,”
said WESTMARC President & CEO Jack Lunsford. “So many
exciting things are happening in the West Valley, and there are
far too many well kept secrets, so WESTMARC is extremely proud to
help illuminate them for everyone. The Awards were again a
resounding success!”
Each year one of the highlights of the Best
of the West Awards is the presentation of the Chairman’s
Award and the John F. Long Lifetime Achievement Award.
The John F. Long Lifetime Achievement
Award “honors a person, organization, business or entity that
has exemplified outstanding service by contribution to the
lifestyle to Western Maricopa County.”
Prior to presenting this year’s award
WESTMARC paid special tribute to John F. Long, “with special
hope of introducing new Valley residents to the vision and legacy
of Mr. Long”.
Herman Orcutt, principal of The Orcutt
Winslow Partnership, received the 2008 John F. Long Lifetime
Achievement Award in recognition of his career as “a major
contributor of time and talent to the landscape of the West
Valley.”
The Chairman’s Award is presented to
“an individual, organization, or event which is so extraordinary
that it merits special recognition”.
The 2008 Chairman’s Award went to
Leland Peterson for his nearly 40 years of leadership at Sun
Health demonstrating “exemplary healthcare leadership and always
being focused on doing what is RIGHT for the patient.”
Jack Lunsford praised both Herman Orcutt
and Lee Peterson on behalf of WESTMARC. “Herman Orcutt and Lee
Peterson have for decades provided tremendous leadership for the
West Valley,” Lunsford commented. “And for WESTMARC in
particular, their fingerprints are all over our success.”
Competition is always high among the Best
of the West Award entries. A diverse panel of noted and
outstanding community leaders chosen from Central Phoenix and the
East Valley judges these entries.
“Our judges are critical to the
integrity and success of Best of the West,” said WESTMARC
Past Chairman Jay Ellingson. “They are themselves valley leaders
and we are most grateful to each of them for their time and
commitment in helping WESTMARC honor the accomplishments of the
West Valley.”
This year’s judges include: Maria
Harper-Marinick, Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs,
Maricopa Community Colleges District; Susan Carlson, Executive
Director of Arizona Business & Education Coalition; Kathleen
“Katie” Pushor, President & CEO of Greater Phoenix Chamber
of Commerce; Jess Roman, former President and CEO of BNC National
Bank and current banking consultant; Edmundo Hidalgo, President
& Chief Executive Officer of Chicanos Por La Causa, Inc.; Kent
Scribner, Superintendent of Phoenix Union High School District;
and Dana Wolfe Naimark, President & CEO of Children Action
Alliance.
Best of the West
is the largest event of its type in the West Valley and one of the
biggest in the entire state. Presented by Cox Communications, the
Awards event also featured Titanium Sponsors, APS and The Arizona
Republic, as well as Platinum Sponsors SCF Arizona and Algodón
Center.

(GDP) Glendale AZ - The
Glendale Visitor Center along with the Historic Downtown businesses
celebrated National Teddy Bear Day with the 4th Annual Teddy Bear Day
event on Sept 6. Nearly 1,800 visitors attended the celebration and
enjoyed a variety of entertainment, make and take arts and crafts and
activities. Visitors were encouraged to start the day at the visitor
center to pick up the event information and take a spin on the prize
wheel.
The first 500 visitors
received a gift bag. An important component of the event was the Teddy
Bear, toy and diaper drive to benefit the Glendale Fire Dept., Crisis
Response Team Trauma Teddy Program and the West Valley Child Crisis
Center.
Hundreds of plush
animals, toys and diapers were donated by event goers. One family
brought in 3 dozen plush bears which were purchased benefiting St. Judes
and in turn will benefit the Teddy Bear Charities. The
twist is it helped a charity when the donor purchased them and then
again helped another charity when they donated them!
Teddy Bear Day is one of
the signature promotions in the Glendale Office of Tourism 12 Months of
Endless Fun campaign which debuted in June.
"We are thrilled to
bring a variety of fun events and activities to our residents and

Arizona’s Governor Signs
Pink Fire Truck!
Glendale Daily Planet
July 17, 2008
By Ed
Sharpe, Dave Graybill and others as noted.
If you ask Dave Graybill why he is
driving a pink fire truck he will probably start by saying he had
an epiphany one day, to make a difference for the women of this
country. (Read the sidebar at end to learn
more!)
The Guardians of the Ribbon where out at
the Capitol on Thursday to honor Governor Janet Napolitano for her
fight against breast cancer. The Governor was asked to sign her
name and a note on the truck in a specific place that was
picked out by Dave Graybill.
Why was that spot chosen for her to
sign? Dave replied, “It is right below where I
drive the pink fire truck and it is right between the fire and
police on our logo”.
“This
is to encourage everyone to get early, regular exams!”

You see Dave is a Glendale Fire Fighter
and the creator of Guardians of the Ribbon and he is asking all
Fire and Police agencies and the leaders of there communities to “Care
Enough to Wear Pink” on the 25th, 26th and 27th of
October.
The Guardians will drive this pink fire
truck across America visiting 32 cities on a 10,000 mile journey
spreading awareness and hope to all the women who have been
affected by breast cancer. He is asking all these women and a few
men to please sign the pink fire truck and remind all those others
that see the pink fire truck to go and get a mammogram.
Dave's goals and those of his non-profit
organization, Guardians of the Ribbon are, "To have as many
people throughout the Country as possible wear pink on the 25th
26th and 27th of October called the
“Care Enough to Wear Pink Campaign”.”
To drive the pink fire truck down the
streets with its pink lights on, having four firefighters in pink
responding to a breast cancer patients home, once there they will
deliver care packages of Hope and Love in pink
boxes. In one of these pink boxes there will be a pink check book,
we will then help her pay the medical bills associated with
her/his fight with breast cancer.
If you would like to help Dave and the
Guardians of the ribbon you can go towww.pinkribbontour.com
or e-mail him at dgraybill911@yahoo.com.
All the sales of shirts and donations are going to help pay the
expenses for the trip across America in the pink fire truck. Dave
estimates that he will need about $12,000 for fuel and if anyone
wants to donate they can do so online.

How the 'Care
Enough to Wear Pink' Campaign Started
We wanted to know how such a dynamic
program as 'Care
Enough to Wear Pink' Campaign'got started.
Dave told us, "I have a friend
who is a fire fighter in Las Cruces New Mexico and his name is
Wally Monsivaiz. One day he called and said his department was
going to wear pink work shirts for breast cancer awareness, he
thought it would be a great idea for our department. After
sleeping on it for a night, it all started coming to me, how I
could inspire about 3,000,000 fire and police officers and leaders
in the community to get involved and start supporting our
women."
A complex pink colored scenario began to
form in Dave's mind, "I dreamed up the pink fire truck and
the statue on the pink trailer with fire fighters dressed in pink
and wearing pink fire helmets, crossing America and inspiring
others to get involved by our efforts."
Dave emphasizes, "We are a male
dominated profession supporting a female dominated disease and we
are in the job of caring for people, I think at the very least we
can 'Care Enough to Wear Pink'."
He continues, "My greatest thing in life to leave for my
own kids is my legacy and to do that I want to help as many people
as I can, by bringing them together for others that we may never
meet. It is not about my pocket book but about my actions that
will be left for my kids when I die."
To Dave and others , breast cancer is not
just a woman thing. There are countless organizations and
businesses that are male dominated that are doing something about
breast cancer awareness such as professional baseball,
professional football and countless others.
Dave
tells us, "I want our organizations (Police and
fire) along with our Politicians to have their own days as
well and if others like the Military and the celebrities in
Hollywood want to join in great."
Different groups
have different days that they celebrate the fight against breast
cancer so I picked these three 25th, 26th and 27th as the days
to care enough to wear pink. They are three because there is
three shifts on the fire department."

The beauty and unpredictability of wood thrills me, I believe each

help to turn it into pieces that can be used, admired & kept

Congratulations to Arizona
Broadcasters Association for receiving the 2008 Rocky
Mountain Southwest Chapter Governor's Award!
The
Rocky Mountain Southwest Chapter of the National Academy
of Television Arts and Sciences Governor’s Award was
presented to the Arizona
Broadcasters Association. Present to accept this prestigious
award was Art Brooks, Association President and CEO .
The Arizona Broadcasters
Association teamed up with the crime stopping, non-profit
organization Silent Witness, to produce the Arizona
Crystal Darkness Campaign.
This was a unique collaboration
between local media, schools, law enforcement, recovery
specialists, faith organizations and the business
community to work together to help victims, create
awareness and prevent Crystal Meth use. The campaign used
a 30-minute gripping documentary titled Crystal Darkness
to spread its message. The story is told through the
powerful testimonies of young people who have gone through
the dark and lonely depths of Meth addiction.
The program, targeted for youths
and their parents, also extended with conviction to an
entire community and throughout the nation. On April 15th
, 2008 from 6:30pm-7:00pm, nearly every network-affiliated
and independent Arizona television station simultaneously
broadcast the program. In the Phoenix market alone, the
program recorded an astounding market share of 49% !
Several prominent radio stations also broadcast the
audio-tailored program, as well as held open caller forums
after it aired. The donation of time to simultaneously air
the program from these stations is of an unprecedented
scale in the Arizona market. There were also town hall
gatherings at high schools across the state of Arizona
where hundreds of students and parents met to watch the
program and then discuss the hazards of meth use.
The Rocky Mountain Southwest
Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and
Sciences Governor’s Award is the highest award our chapter
gives to a unique individual, organization or station.
The Board of Governors calls for
nominations in July of each year. A panel convenes and
should it believe that one or several of the nominees meet
the stringent criteria, a selection will be made. The Emmy
statuette is presented annually at the Rocky Mountain Emmy
Awards. Past recipients have ranged from technical
innovations to public service programs.

GLENDALE FIRE TO
LOWER ITS FLAGS IN
OBSERVANCE OF FALLEN FIREFIGHTERS
GLENDALE, AZ. – The
Glendale Fire Department, in observance of the National
Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service, will lower its flags
to half-staff on Sunday, October 5, 2008. By lowering the
U.S. flags at each Glendale Fire Station, we recognize the
brave men and women who died protecting their communities
from natural and manmade emergencies and disasters and
those who carry on the proud tradition of the fire
service.
On October 16, 2001,
President George W. Bush approved legislation requiring
the U.S. flag to be lowered to half-staff on all Federal
buildings to memorialize fallen firefighters. Public Law
107-51 required this action to occur annually in
conjunction with observance of the National Fallen
Firefighters Memorial Service. “Everyday firefighters
across the Nation are making a conscious decision when
they put their protective gear on the truck that they may
lose their lives while serving their community,” said
Glendale Fire Chief Mark Burdick. “Without doubt
firefighters constantly train and in doing so make the
decision to not die during emergencies but unfortunately
it happens from time to time due to the dangers of this
job,” Burdick continued. “We pay tribute to those who
have made the ultimate sacrifice,” Chief Burdick added.
GLENDALE
FIREFIGHTERS HELP KICK OFF
‘FIRE PREVENTION MONTH’
GLENDALE,
Ariz. –
Glendale Fire Department in partnership with the Glendale
Police Department HUNG fire prevention bags filled with
various safety items on the doors of approximately 800
residents in the Glendale Orchard Glenn area Saturday,
09-27 as the City of Glendale kicked-off Fire
Prevention Month a few days early. On September 23rd, at
the city’s most recent council meeting, Glendale Mayor
Elaine Scruggs proclaimed the month of October as National
Fire Prevention Month.
The
Orchard Glenn Home Owners Association received a Weed and
Seed Grant to make an impact in their neighborhood to
prevent home fires.
“Traditionally
firefighters find themselves in a reactive industry,” said
Glendale Fire Chief Mark Burdick. “The Glendale Fire
Department continues its efforts to be as pro-active as
possible,” Chief Burdick continued. “It’s important to
make efforts to stop emergencies before they can happen by
promoting all aspects of safety. We commend everyone
associated with the Orchard Glenn Home Owners Association
for their dedication toward the safety of their neighbors,”
Chief Burdick added.
Armed
Robbery/Stabbing
GLENDALE, Ariz.
– A man was stabbed last night when he tried to intervene
during a fight between two suspects and three security
guards at a north Glendale mall. Though seriously injured,
it appears the victim will survive.
At 7:45 p.m. Wednesday (10/1) two
suspects attempted to steal five boxes of shoes from the
Mervyn’s store at Arrowhead Mall in Glendale. Three loss
prevention employees from the store confronted the suspects
and a fight ensued. During the fight, one suspect produced a
knife. At that time, a private citizen attempted to disarm
the knife-wielding suspect. The suspect stabbed the victim
in the torso, causing serious injury. The suspects then ran
to a waiting car and fled the area.
Store security video was seized by
detectives and is currently being reviewed.
The suspects are described as
follows:
Suspect 1: White male, 25 to 30
years old, clean shaven head, 5 foot 10 inches, 170 lbs,
wearing a light colored T-shirt, jeans, and white sneakers.
He has a tattoo on the back of his neck.
Suspect 2: White male, 25 to 30
years old, short dark hair, 5 foot 10, 200 to 220 lbs, dark
tank top and jeans.
The suspect vehicle is a blue
4-door Chevrolet HHR, which resembles a PT Cruiser.
The victim is a 27 year-old male
who resides in Glendale.
Anyone with information about this
crime is asked to call the Glendale Police at (623)
930-3000.
GLENDALE, Ariz.
– Glendale police detectives continue to investigate the
armed robbery and aggravated assault case that occurred
Wednesday night (10/1) at the Mervyn’s store at
Arrowhead Towne Center. Anthony Ely, 27, of Glendale, was
stabbed when he attempted to disarm a knife-wielding
suspect who was fighting with loss prevention employees.
Investigators are releasing
surveillance video of the two suspects in the hope that
someone will identify them. The video shows the two men
walking around the store carrying the shoes they intended
to steal, then the confrontation with employees at the
exit. The clean-shaven bald man is the suspect who stabbed
the victim immediately outside the store.
Anyone with information about
this crime is asked to call Silent Witness at 480 WITNESS

‘Therapy
Paws’ are just what the doctor ordered at
West
Valley Hospital
Jean Reynolds and Nelli
(WVH) Goodyear,
Ariz. (October 2, 2008) – What
significantly dropped stress, pulmonary and artery pressure
and improved heart function in a 2005 UCLA study of 76 heart
patients?
It
wasn’t a pill. It didn’t involve a needle either.
It was pet therapy.
And
early in September of this year, West
Valley Hospital welcomed Therapy Paws to further enhance the
healing environment of the five year old medical facility.
Therapy
Paws, founded by Jean Reynolds and Nelli, Jean’s
Australian Shepherd whose favorite trick is to give hugs, is
a group of friends who willingly gives their time and love
to make a positive difference in the lives of others by
sharing their pets. All Therapy Paws members are
registered pet partner teams and have passed the
skills/aptitude test required by the Delta Society®, an
international nonprofit organization dedicated to improving
human health through service and therapy animals.
Every
Tuesday and Thursday, Therapy Paws pet partner teams can be
found at West
Valley Hospital at specific times during the day, visiting
patients who would like a little TLC from our very special
four-legged friends.
Pet
therapy has been shown to lower blood pressure, heart rate
and cardiovascular risks. It has also been shown to
reduce anxiety, isolation and fear of procedures while
improving social interactions in hospitalized patients.
Of
course, hospital employees and visitors benefit from Therapy
Paws too. In just three short weeks, Nelli and her friends
are asked for, sought out and greeted with smiles and fur
strokes by staff.
“The
emotional and therapeutic effects on patients and staff are
so rewarding.” says Jean Reynolds. “We come to West
Valley so everyone
can benefit from the healing and unconditional love that our
dogs provide.”
To
learn more about Therapy Paws and how you and your dog can
become a registered team, please contact Jean Reynolds at

Fatal
Collision
GLENDALE, Ariz.
– A Glendale man was killed last night when the vehicle
he was riding in collided with a sign during a single
vehicle collision. The collision took place in the 4500
block of west Bethany Home Road.
Shortly before 10 p.m.
Sunday night (10/5), four immigrants from Africa were
traveling west bound on Bethany Home Road. At 45th Avenue,
the vehicle drove onto the raised concrete median that
separates the frontage road from the main roadway. The
vehicle struck a sign mounted on a post, causing damage to
the vehicle and fatal injury to the front seat passenger.
Investigators are looking into reports that the victim was
not properly seated, nor wearing a seat belt at the time
of the collision.
The driver is a 22
year-old black male. His driving actions and possible
impairment by drugs or alcohol are being investigated. He
has not been arrested and tests results are not available
at this time. The victim had been identified as Patrick
Ndayiziga (b/m 21 yrs.) of Glendale.
The west bound lanes of
Bethany Home Road are closed between 43rd and 47th Avenues,
but investigators expect to have the roadway re-opened in
time for morning rush hour.

Poisoned
Pen Bookstore's 19th Anniversary
The Poisoned Pen Bookstore in Scottsdale, Arizona is one
of the treasures of the Valley. On Friday, Oct. 3, The
Poisoned Pen celebrated its nineteenth anniversary. This
special bookstore is a full service general bookstore with
a specialty in crime fiction. Barbara Peters, the owner,
said she started the store nineteen years ago as a hobby.
Now, the store is in the fourth version, starting on the
twentieth year.
The Poisoned Pen is the place to go to hear and meet
authors. Just in October, the store has already hosted the
National Launch Party of Phoenix Media Star Jana
Bommersback for her new true-crime Bones in the Desert,
and Dennis Lehane, author of The Given Day. Tess
Gerritsen with her new book, The Keepsake, and
Terry Brooks, author of the Shannara books, are scheduled
this month.
Over the years, the bookstore has received numerous
honors. The store won the 2001 Raven Award from the
Mystery Writers of America!; it has been Winner, The
Arizona Republic and the New Times Best of
Phoenix and Best of Scottsdale, Best Bookstore!; and a
Nominee, Publishers Weekly's Bookseller of the
Year.
So, what's the future for this special bookstore in an age
when so many independent bookstores fold when owners move
on? Barbara Peters, who now refers to herself as a
volunteer bookseller, spends a great deal of time
traveling. She's quoted as saying, "When I go
traveling, no paycheck goes with me. And there is no
interruption in service to you thanks to the admirable
Poisoned Pen professionals. My status has been more that
of volunteer for several years in preparation for a new
generation of Poisoned Pen ownership. We want the
transition to be as seamless as possible."
So, those of us who love The Poisoned Pen can look forward
to more years of enjoyment at the bookstore.
Congratulations to The Poisoned Pen Bookstore, and Barbara
Peters, for nineteen years of service to the reading
community.
The Poisoned Pen Bookstore is located at 4014 N Goldwater
Blvd., Suite 101, Scottsdale, Arizona 85251.

IT TAKES A NATION TO BUILD A ROCKET
By Steve Cook, NASA Ares Projects Manager
Marshall Space Flight Center, Huntsville, Ala.
If you don't follow NASA more closely than noting a space shuttle
launch
or space walk on the International Space Station, you may not be
aware
that America is building a new rocket.
It's called the Ares I, and it is America's rocket that will carry
humans into space for exploration missions to the moon and beyond.
Together with a larger follow-on rocket, the Ares V, and a capsule
called Orion which will house our astronaut crews, the Ares I
makes up
our country's new space transportation system.
America first landed on the moon almost 40 years ago when Neil
Armstrong
took the small step that was a giant leap for mankind. We didn't
stay
very long back then.
Now we plan to build an outpost on the moon, and conduct
scientific
research there that will result in learning more about our own
planet
and the universe we live in. We also will learn the skills
required to
continue space exploration and expand human presence throughout
our
solar system.
Just as happened when we first went to the moon with the Apollo
program,
the technology innovation this activity generates will find many
new
uses in our nation's economy, promoting national prosperity.
And just as in Apollo, it will take the collective skills and hard
work
of our entire nation to make this happen.
Right now, 213 companies in 32 states and Puerto Rico are working
on the
Ares I rocket -- including four firms here in Arizona.
America's space budget is spent right here on Earth.
Building a new rocket provides many benefits. Besides technology
innovation, economic stimulus and acquisition of new knowledge, it
inspires the next generation of scientists and engineers and
promotes
our national security and our national pride.
For all these reasons, many other nations around the globe are
rapidly
expanding their own space programs. China has announced plans to
send
its astronauts to the moon.
They do so because not only does it take a nation to build a
rocket -- a
new rocket also can help build a nation.

Banner
Thunderbird Medical Center first in Arizona to get new cancer
treatment technology
GLENDALE, Ariz. - September 22,
2008 - Banner Thunderbird Medical Center will be the first
hospital in Arizona to offer cutting edge cancer treatment with an
Elekta Axesse machine. The Swedish-made machine offers leading
edge stereotactic radiosurgery and therapy as well as Volumetric
Modulated Arc Therapy - treatments for cancer that drastically
decrease treatment time, and increase patient comfort and accuracy
in targeting hard-to-treat tumors. Banner Thunderbird Radiation
Oncology staff will treat their first patient with the new machine
during the first week of February 2009.
"The Elekta Axesse lets us to treat
patients quickly and even more accurately," said Banner
Thunderbird Radiation Oncologist Dr. Paul Mitsuyama. "The
most exciting thing is that treatments that used to take between
10 and 30 minutes will be shortened to two to 10 minutes.
" The shortened time will also allow
the department to increase the volume of patients treated at
Banner Thunderbird's Radiation Oncology Department. The new
technology helps doctors zero in on and treat cancer with minimal
damage to surrounding healthy tissue providing non-invasive
treatment for difficult-to-treat tumors in areas such as the
brain, spinal cord, lungs, liver and prostate.
"We're able to treat tumors in
critical areas and protect healthy tissue," said Dr.
Mitsuyama.
Constant measurements with the use
of a camera target the tumors in real time to accommodate movement
and changes within the patient's body.
Banner Thunderbird is already preparing
the room that will house the new $3 million, state-of-the-art
machine. The Elekta Axesse will be delivered in October and will
go through a commissioning and licensing process prior to treating
the first patients.
"This is something different in the
West Valley and we're the only hospital in the state with this
machine," said Robin Johnson, Banner Thunderbird's director
of Radiation and Oncology. "This is just one way we're market
leaders in providing excellent patient care."

Police
request assistance with possible kidnapping
At
3:25 pm. today, a credible witness saw the following incident:
A
16-17 year old white female with shoulder length blonde hair,
white shirt and pink capri pants was walking southbound on
47th Avenue, south of Bethany Home Road. A gold 2006 to
2008 Jeep Liberty pulled up from the south, crossed traffic and
stopped by the girl.
A
black male, about 18-20 years of age got out, grabbed her, and
forced her into the Jeep. As he returned to the driver's
seat, the girl was seen trying to get out of the car, but was
evidently held by a second subject in the back. The Jeep
made a U turn and left southbound on 47th Avenue. The
black male was wearing a white hat, a long white T shirt and
unknown color jeans.
I
frankly admit that this could be a teen prank, or a
boyfriend/girlfriend incident, or even a family matter.
However, the possibility of a kidnapping is too great to simply
ignore. We are anxious to determine, if possible, if this
is a serious crime, or something far less sinister.
The
Glendale Police are asking for anyone with information to call
the Glendale Police at 623-930-3000.
UPDATE>
9/16/2008 3:17Jim Toomey GPD PIO SAYS..... am pleased to report
the girl who was thought to be abducted has been found
alive and well.
The incident turned out to be a minor squabble between the girl
(17) and her boyfriend (16). They live together about 1/2
mile south of where the incident occurred.
Det. Bill Johnston located the Jeep by searching the area and
was able to speak to the victim directly. The altercation
is being investigated, but we are gratified that our worst fears
for the victim's safety were not realized.

LET
THERE BE LIGHT … ALL
THE TIME!
(COG-GDP)GLENDALE,
Ariz.
– Say goodbye to having to call in or fill out an online form
to report a street light outage. Thanks to a new system, called
ROAM, a remote monitoring device on top of all
Glendale street
lights will electronically notify the Glendale Transportation
Department of a specific street light outage as soon as an
outage occurs.
The
city of
Glendale
is the first city in the
United States
to have its entire street lighting system remotely and
automatically monitored. More than 19,000 city street lights
house this state-of-the-art alert system. The ROAM system has
been in place since Dec. 2007, and since its installation, the
reported number of street light outages has declined from 10
percent to 1.1 percent, which is a record in the street lighting
industry.
“With
this street light monitoring system, we know about the outages
before most residents would notice an outage and decide to call
it in,” said Jamsheed Mehta,
Glendale
transportation director. “Keeping all of our street lights in
service not only provides critical customer service, but it also
helps enhance safety and nighttime vision at all times.”
Transportation
staff can monitor the daily performance of each street light
from a computer or laptop. The results indicate whether a light
was working during the previous day’s 24-hour period.
The system is called R.O.A.M., which is
short for Remote Operation Asset Management. It is manufactured
by Acuity Brands Lighting, one of the world's leading providers
of lighting fixtures. In May, ROAM received Lightfair
International's 2007 Innovation Award as "Best of
Category".
ROAM will allow street lights to give remote status reports to
the team in charge of their maintenance. This more efficient
feedback system will eventually replace current weekly night
patrols of the entire city. The change will save both manpower
and money over time.
One of the main pieces of new equipment being used is the type
of photocontrol. Standard street light photocontrols measure the
amount of natural light available. This sensor then tells the
light when to turn on or off. The new generation is greatly
enhanced by the addition of embedded communication chips.
ROAM works by allowing the equipped lights to receive
information on neighboring lamps. If a street light is no longer
working, the failure will register with nearby lights. This
information is then transmitted to a network operations center.
The Public Works Department and its contractor can access at any
time through a secure internet web portal.
Each working light can also send reports on its own status, 4
times daily or, on demand. These reports are possible through a
combination of intelligent photocontrols, machine to machine
communications (M2M), wireless communications, mobility
technologies, and network management services.
New Orleans announced that it was
planning to implementing this system also on Dec 06 1007.
Let's get to some more details on
the system. The photos are not of "our" system but
will serve to give you a general idea of the shape of things to
come. Information from http://www.holophane.com/roam/
Q.
What makes
a ROAM photocontrol different from a standard photocontrol?
A.
The ROAM
photocontrol features all the same components found in a
standard photocontrol.
It
also functions as a standard photocontrol (on at dusk; off at
dawn) However the ROAM
photocontrol
features added diagnostic and wireless technology. The ROAM
photocontrol detects
fixture
malfunction and transmits this information wirelessly to the
network operations center (NOC).
Q.
Is the
ROAM photocontrol the same size as a standard photocontrol?
A.
The ROAM
photocontrol is 3-1⁄8” x 3-3⁄4” high, which is
slightly taller than most standard photocontrols
to
accommodate the added technology.
Q.
What
voltages can ROAM operate?
A.
100-265 VAC @
60Hz
Q.
What lamp
types can the ROAM system support?
A.
High pressure
sodium, metal halide and mercury vapor lamps
Q.
Is the
ROAM photocontrol backward compatible?
A.
Yes. The ROAM
photocontrol is backward compatible with streetlights featuring
a twist lock type
receptacle.
Q.
On what
frequency does the ROAM system operate?
A.
The ROAM
system meets all applicable FCC requirements and operates at
915MHz ISM
Q.
Will the
network go down?
A.
Any network
can lose connectivity. However, the ROAM network is
self-healing, self-configuring and
self-optimizing
meaning that if connectivity is lost, the system will reform
within an hour provided
that
there is not a larger scale power problem prohibiting operation.
Q.
Is
lighting data secure as it travels between photocontrols,
gateways, the
NOC
and customer portal?
A.
The strongest
encryption is used to ensure that lighting data is secure as it
travels through the system.
The
highest security priority is placed on on/off command control.
The customer web portal
requires
a user id and password to access lighting data.
Q.
Do ROAM
photocontrols and gateways feature surge protection?
A.
Yes. ROAM
features 320 J / 10,000amp surge protection
Q.
Can I
retrieve status/health of my system on request?
A.
Yes. The
system will automatically report in 4 times in a 24 hour period,
but you can request status
on
demand.

What
Can My Streetlights Tell Me?
ROAM provides owners and
operators unprecedented visibility into their
streetlighting system, from detection of a single
cycling lamp to a large group of streetlights that
have lost power. With ROAM, owners and operators are
made aware of problems prior to a customer
complaint. In addition, ROAM provides more detail
about the nature of the problem than would be
provided by a caller, night patrol or even basic
troubleshooting.
ROAM's robust diagnostics
allow monitoring of street light current and
voltage as well as these malfunction conditions:
Malfunctioning
lamp, ballast or starter
Cycling
lamp
Day-burning
lamp
Non-reporting
fixture due to power loss or communication

TWO FAMILIES
DISPLACED AFTER APARTMENT FIRE IN GLENDALE
(Photos and story GFD)
GLENDALE, Ariz. – Glendale and Phoenix firefighters
responded to an apartment complex near 43rd and Northern
Avenues yesterday, 09-16, at approximately 4:30 PM for an
apartment fire. According to a Glendale Fire Investigator,
the fire may have originated in a storage room located
behind one apartment. It is believed that the fire started
at the base of a gas water heater. The fire spread to a
total of two apartments with a third apartment, which was
vacant, receiving some water damage. The damage estimate is
tallied at $75,000.
The two apartments that
the fire affected most were occupied by residents. According
to an occupant, he noticed the fire just outside of his back
door and it quickly spread to the roof of his home. He and
his wife immediately made their way out and knocked on the
next door neighbor’s door to inform them of the situation.
The neighbor and her two teenage daughters immediately left
their apartment. 9-11 was called and firefighters arrived
just minutes after.
Glendale Fire’s
Crisis Response Team worked with the American Red Cross to
help with any immediate needs of the displaced families. “Both
families did exactly what they should have done by getting
out, calling 9-11 and staying out,” said Glendale
Firefighter Daniel Valenzuela. This serves as another
reminder to check your smoke detectors and home escape
plans. You never know when you’ll have to rely on them.

Lullabies
and Level II at West Valley Hospital
Photo

Ellie Milo, director of women and infant services for West
Valley Hospital, in the new Level II nursery.
Goodyear,
Ariz. (September 17, 2008) – If
you happen to be a patient or a visitor at West Valley
Hospital and you hear a lullaby being played over the intercom
system, you can be sure of one thing. A baby was born.
Of
course, a lullaby is not really an enticement for
parents-to-be when considering a hospital for the birth of a
baby. However, the fact that West
Valley Hospital now has a Level II nursery is definitely an
added incentive.
West
Valley Hospital’s Level II nursery provides care for babies
born at 32 weeks gestation or greater, and for those who need
close supervision or extra help after birth. The nursery
staff dedicated to caring for these babies consists of
registered nurses who are specially trained in Level II Care,
neonatal nurse practitioners, neonatologists, and pediatric
primary care providers.
“We
are really excited about our Level II certification,” says
Ellie Milo, director of women and infant services.
“Being able to provide this additional level of care
demonstrates our commitment to the health care needs of the
communities we serve.”
Sometimes
babies in a Level II nursery may need monitoring for apnea,
IV’s, special medications, an incubator or other assistance
to maintain their body temperatures or nourishment intake.
Level II staff work closely with families, teaching them about
any special procedure or medication their babies may need at
home.
Most
babies born several weeks early will spend some time in a
Level II nursery for observation. Babies with more serious
conditions may need to be transferred to a hospital with a
higher level care unit.

Toy
Drive at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center
Benefits Hospitalized Children Glendale, Ariz.
-
September 17, 2008 - Banner Thunderbird Medical Center and the
Central Arizona Project have teamed up to ask the community to
"Share the Love" by donating a new toy during the
"Share the Love" toy drive.
The toy
drive, which benefits Banner Thunderbird Children's Center's
Andrea's Closet, runs through September 30. Andrea's Closet is
a toy closet established in honor of Andrea Nicole Brunk, a
girl who passed away from Leukemia shortly before her tenth
birthday. After going through treatments and procedures, every
patient of Banner Thunderbird Children's Center can choose a
donated toy from the closet.
"Kids
don't get to choose when they have an IV or surgery or even
what they get to eat sometimes while they're here," said
Joy Daugherty, Child Life Coordinator and Child Life
Specialist. "Being in a hospital takes away their
autonomy and this gives them the opportunity to choose
something fun." Daugherty said she sometimes sees
pediatric patients spend an hour in Banner Thunderbird
Children's Center's Andrea's Closet trying to decide what toy
to take with them. "One patient told me it's the best
thing in the hospital," Daugherty said. Collection bins
are set up throughout Banner Thunderbird Medical Center and
community members can drop off new toys.
For more
information about the toy drive call Daugherty at (602)
865-5074. Banner Thunderbird Medical Center is located at 5555
W. Thunderbird Road in Glendale.
"Andrea's
closet provides a light at the end of the tunnel after kids
have procedures - they get to go into a room filled with
toys," Daugherty said. "It makes an unfavorable
situation a little better and it's a little thing we can do to
make the hospital a better place."
On a previous
visit during another toy drive, Mayor's Youth Advisory Committee
(MYAC) Students Ashley
Johnson, Senior at Mountain Ridge and Callie Shawcross, Senior
at Mountain Ridge, take
a break and examine some of the many treasures inside
Andrea’s Closet at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center in
Glendale. This toy program brings pediatric patients
comfort and distraction from their pain by allowing them to
choose a special gift from the toy-filled closet. Be sure to
contribute to the current toy drive at Banner Thunderbird.

About
Andrea's Closet
Andrea's
Closet is named for Andrea Brunk, who was 8 years old when she
was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in July 2000.
Like many children dealing with such a disease, Andrea dreaded
her regular visits to the hospital.
Through chemotherapy and radiation treatments, the child-life
specialist at Phoenix's St. Joseph's Hospital tried to keep up
Andrea's spirits. They presented her with a Beanie Baby or
some other prize from their stash every time she had to endure
a painful or scary procedure.
Soon Andrea
discovered the closet where the goodies were kept...
Unfortunately, she passed
away from Leukemia shortly before her tenth birthday.
The toy drive, which
benefits Banner Thunderbird Children's Center's Andrea's
Closet, runs through September 30. After going through
treatments and procedures, every patient of Banner Thunderbird
Children's Center can choose a donated toy from the closet.

Planet / KKAT-IPTV in Glendale, AZ
Glendale
Daily Planet, the parent organization of KKAT-IPTV was started in 2004
as the first community journalism news site in Glendale and perhaps all
of Arizona... Serving The Metro West Side of the Valley of the Sun,
Glendale Daily Planet has witnessed, participated in and recorded the
further rejuvenation of the downtown core, the meteoric rise of the
'Glendale Sports Empire' and the restoration of historic sections of the
town.
One aspect Sharpe is most proud of is the ability to have a continuous
24/7 stream of archived footage in the player but yet, when a special
event arises, have the ability to go live interrupting the
pre-programmed content to cover the event. With the advent of higher
speed EVDO radio cards and compact portable satellite terminals the
options are limitless.
Residents can now catch stories of interest on their schedule, taking
advantage of the on-demand character of Internet media. No more
waiting for 5 or 10pm and no need to program the TiVo. Important
stories remain available, a mouse click away, for years in the online
archives..
Sharpe
is a member of the National Academy of Television Arts and
Sciences (NATAS), Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE),
Independent Feature Project (IFP) (IFP/PHX), The Arizona Association

September Marks
Emergency Preparedness Month
GLENDALE FIRE DEPARTMENT
REMINDS COMMUNITY TO BE DISASTER PREPARED
GLENDALE,
Ariz.
– With so many potential disasters throughout the country
on the horizon from forest fires to floods and even hurricanes,
Glendale Firefighters are asking the community to create an
emergency preparedness plan. There are three easy steps to follow
to create your emergency preparedness plan; (1) Get a kit, (2)
Make a plan, and (3) Be informed. Here are a few examples for each
topic;
Get a
kit-
Your kit should be a sturdy and easy to carry to container.
Water, one gallon of
water per person per day for at least three days.
Food, at least a
three-day supply of non-perishable food.
Flashlights and extra
batteries.
Battery-powered radio.
First aid kit.
Prescription and
non-prescription medication.
Eye glasses.
Important phone
numbers.
Make
a plan
Plan places where your
family will meet, both within and outside of your immediate
neighborhood.
If possible, have an out
of town contact. It may be easier to make a long distance
call due to local phone lines being overloaded. This will
help with communicating between separated family members.
Be
informed
Learn
about disasters or emergencies in your area.

GLENDALE, Ariz.
– The Big Read returns this September with Dashiell Hammett’s
“The Maltese Falcon.” This detective novel is a brilliant
literary work, as well as a thriller, a love story, and a dark,
dry comedy. The 1930 novel set the standard by which all
subsequent detective fiction would be judged. This book spawned
director John Huston’s classic 1941 film that starred Humphrey
Bogart as the hardboiled private eye Sam Spade. Two other
versions had been filmed prior.
The West Valley Arts Council,
with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts and the
Glendale Arts Commission, is sponsoring the local Big Read, which
runs during September and October. On Aug. 25, more than 100
copies of the book will be available to check out at the Glendale
libraries – just look for the life-size Humphrey Bogart display
as Sam Spade.
Tanicus Wins
Glendale Public Library’s Battle of the Bands
GLENDALE, Ariz.
– On Aug. 8, Glendale Main Library held a teen Battle of the
Bands. One would expect a competition of this sort to have a
dozen or so bands competing for the title of The Best Band. And
they did vie, only not in the numbers that were originally
imagined.
By the entry deadline, three
bands had gone through the registration process and were set for
the big day. Tanicus, Chaos Theory and Chandler Heights were
ready for the competition.
On the night of the event, the
library’s auditorium was crowded with interested friends,
family, teens and people who just like rock music. Each group
had 30-minutes to set up, tear down and perform. And perform
they did! Only Chandler Heights had dropped out of the line up.
The two bands were a study of
contrasts. Tanicus is “older,” with all four members being
17-year-old seniors at Sandra Day O’Connor High School,
located in northwest Phoenix. They have played together since
their freshman year. They do mostly original music. Chaos Theory
was formed last year for a talent show at Desert Sky Middle
School. The band is composed of four Glendale brothers, ranging
in age from 12-15, along with a dynamite 15-year-old female
drummer. The older students go to Deer Valley High School. Chaos
Theory performs both originals and cover songs.
In the end, Tanicus won the
Battle of the Bands, but both bands are noteworthy.
Tanicus is composed of Nick
Rossi, drummer; Zach Erfort, lead guitar; Kyle Beloin, lead
vocals/bass player; and Jason Holmes, rhythm guitar. The band is
not totally sure what their name means or its origin, but they
think it may mean “new king,” which fits perfectly with
their idea of the music they want to play. One thing they do
like about their name is that when they google it, only their
band pops up.
“We are trying to
revolutionize music,” says Rossi. “It is now going in an
ill-advised direction. It’s too much of the same. We want to
be different from everyone else. We want to step in and bring
something new.”
“I want people to like us
because we’re different rather than to like us because we’re
like someone else,” Beloin chimes in.
“We like to take different
styles,” adds Erfort, “and combine them. Every song we do is
different We want to take what Nirvana did to the ‘90s and do
it to the 2000s.”
The boys, all good students,
have read about their favorite revolutionary bands – Black
Sabbath, Guns N’ Roses, Led Zeppelin, as well as Nirvana –
and are determined not to repeat the life mistakes that they
made. They want to take a step out of the comfort zone, take a
risk, sound different and create something new.
They are college-bound, most
going directly to Arizona State University. Erfort will make a
stop at GCC North before heading to Tempe. They all plan
studying for degrees that will help them have a career in the
music industry, even if their band falters along the way.
The group bemoans the fact
that the club scene on the westside is sparse; Tempe is the hot
spot for new rock bands. On July 25 they had an opportunity to
play in L.A.’s world-famous rock club Whisky A Go-Go. Will
they follow the footsteps of the Doors and Led Zeppelin into
fame and fortune? Time will tell.
Words that come to mind for
the young men in the Tanicus band are “intense” and “passionate.”
There is no doubt that they are pursuing their musical dreams.
In a way, Chaos Theory is like
a “little brother” to Tanicus. They were formed more
recently, but also are influenced by a variety of styles,
including rock, heavy metal, jazz and classical music. They have
been playing music since early childhood and have developed
their own style of rock and roll.
Brothers Ole, 14, and Siever
Braatelien, 13, put the group together and added Collis, 12, a
6th grader at Bellair Elementary School; Creighton, 15, and
Courtney Nelson, also 15. Siever plays lead and rhythm guitar,
as well as lead and backup harmony; Collis plays keyboards,
guitar and electric bass. Ole plays lead and rhythm guitar,
Creighton plays electric bass and sings vocals, and the lone
female, Courtney, is the drummer.
In talking to the father of
the clan, Tom Braatelien emphasizes that these youths are “more
than just a bunch of good-looking faces.” His sons are
involved with many different varieties of activities and
organizations including scouting, swimming, football, wrestling,
reading, playing chess, baseball, and playing Xbox.
Courtney, who got her first
drum set at age 12, is in the high school marching band and is
on the high school drum line. She now studies percussion with
A.D. Adams, who is the drummer from the locally renowned rock
and roll band Crash Street Kids.
Look out for Chaos Theory;
they love what they do, too!
The teen librarians say
that there will be another Battle of the Bands next spring. Call
Kearsten at 623-930-568 or Merideth at 623-930-3580 for
information about playing in the 2009 Battle of the Bands. They
also plan to upload videos from the Tanicus/Chaos Theory battle
to the teen librarian’s MySpace website,www.myspace.com/teenlibrariansgpl.
The website also has information on
other teen library events.

This Glendale Balloon
Glow event was special with the addition of a handicapped
pilot, Michael Glen, owner and pilot of “Elevation II” out of
Tucson, Arizona.
Glen
tells us, “I guess you could say I was born into
ballooning"
"My
dad, Bill Glen, started in 1973, and I was born in 1975. I had my
first balloon ride at two weeks old – so I am told."
"As a child, my parents let me play with the controls and
instruments, and as a teenager, I got my student pilot license, with
the intention of completing my pilot’s license. But being a
teenager, I tended to sleep instead of get up early to fly."
"In 1996, I had an accident which left my legs paralyzed. I
finally got my pilot’s license – because I wanted to achieve my
goal, not because I would be the only paraplegic hot air balloon
pilot in the world."
"I fly a balloon called a ‘Duo-Chariot'. I call it a
‘love seat in the air.’ It is a two-seater bench with a harness
or lap belt–depending on how much you want to be strapped in.
There is no basket around you. You do have a solid foot rest, unlike
the ‘Cloudhopper’ balloon which is a seat in the air with your
legs dangling. I sure didn’t want to use that."
Glenn lists his "real Job" as a motivational speaker and
is willing to travel anywhere to get the
message out. (Schools and organizations interesting in having
him speak can find details on his
websitewww.rollingpilot.com/
)
He tells
us: "It is important to me to speak to kids and young
adults."
"I
go around to schools and give demonstrations to show them that if I,
a paraplegic, can pilot a hot air balloon, then anything they want
to do is possible." He added.
Glenn
describes the joy of it all:
"The
greatest joy I get from flying is the freedom...
"There
is nothing like waking up in the morning and flying or even
crewing."
"There
are three balloon pilots and three balloons in my family –
my father, my brother, and myself. So there is always the
opportunity to either fly or crew – and both are equally
fun. "
"Flying
for me is like sitting on a platform in the sky and watching
the world below you".

Michael Glen is truly the ambassador of Hot Air Ballooning!
He
enjoys talking to both young and old and sharing his joy of
this spectacular sport.
During
the Glendale Balloon Glow event in Downtown Glendale, Glen
visited with hundreds of people explaining all aspects of ballooning,
his disability and love for the sport.
(Right)
No matter where Glen sets up people cluster around with smiles
and barrages of questions for this talented Balloon Pilot.
______
Michael
Glen's First Balloon.
The
Case of the Stolen Balloon...
Glen
said someone disconnected his trailer from his truck sometime
between midnight and 6 a.m. In it was his balloon.
The balloon Elevation is blue, yellow and green and has a
special metal basket to accommodate Glen.
The
balloon was in a blue-green trailer with Arizona license plate
94896 with balloon stickers on the back.
If
you see it in Albuquerque call: 242-COPS (242-2677). In other
towns contact the local police also.
Elevation Michael's
Balloon 'Elevation'
was stolen on October 6, 2006 in Albuquerque, NM.
