About the Crane!
 |
Left - Gary
Lively from Southwest Industrial Rigging. When asked
about how massive this crane is he smiles and replies... "The
one I usually work with is twice this size!"
Gary has worked
with Southwest for 16 years.
The Grove GMK5275 is
the largest "Rough Terrain Crane" that the
company offers. Truck mounted cranes for larger
capacity and greater boom length are available but are
unable to traverse rough terrain as this unit will do.
Although there were no rough terrain issues to deal with,
this crane was just the right size for this job.
Want something larger?
Try out their Grove GMK7550 550 ton hydraulic with mega lift
attachments that turn it into the largest crane in Arizona. -es

The
Gabrielle Liese Spirit Award Presentation |
The
Gabrielle Liese Spirit Award was created in 2006 to honor those whose
contributions to bead research in general or The Bead Museum in
particular have made a significant impact on the growth of the
institution. The award was named after the Museum’s founder
and Director Emeritus, Gabrielle Liese. Liese was the first
recipient of the award. Last year the award was presented to
Sindi Schloss, a gemologist from
Scottsdale
. Sindi has been a significant member of the Museum Board of
Directors since 1999 when the Museum moved to
Glendale
from
Prescott
. Sindi has curated many exhibitions and serves as the Chair of
the Exhibition, Education and Acquisitions Committee. This year
the award was presented to Cheryl Cobern-Browne, a local business
woman who was instrumental in securing a home for The
Bead
Museum
in
Glendale
. Cheryl became the first Managing Director of the Museum after
it moved to
Glendale
. These three ladies are each responsible for building the
foundation upon which the Museum is securely positioned. They
also continue to provide guidance and council as the Museum moves into
its next phase of growth.

GLENDALE OPENS
FIRST “GREEN” AND
LARGEST
PARK AND RIDE FACILITY IN THE VALLEY
11 a.m., Tuesday, March 25 Northeast
corner of 99th Avenue and Glendale
Avenue

City of Glendale Mayor Elaine
Scruggs, Councilmember Joyce Clark, along with Glendale
Officials today showcased a new Glendale Park and Ride. This
facility is a “green” design and the first
environmentally friendly structure of its kind.
Buses, shuttles, shovels and
the community will carve out the future of the Valley’s
largest Park and Ride. Guests learned about the various
green engineering designs that will make this facility
environmentally friendly. For example, experts
demonstrated by using a water dump truck a street surface
that will act as a sponge (say goodbye to puddles and
urban heat). This project is one of the first large
projects in the western United States utilizing this
science.

3 April 2008
The
Cadets from all over the Arizona Wing of the Civil Air Patrol, the
US Air Force Auxiliary, will be participating in the 21st Annual
Summer Field Training Exercise (FTX) on April 4 – April 6, 2008 at
the Buckeye Hills Regional Park.
The FTX program has always
been closely tied to the National Ground Search and Rescue School (NGSAR,
founded in 1996, is now a part of the National Emergency Services
Academy (NESA) based at Camp Atterbury, IN). The FTX program focused
on only training ground team members, and supplemented the wing
exercise schedule. Members would be expected to come out to several
training weekends starting with a "Winter" FTX to get the
varied topics covered over several months. This grew and changed
over the years to better fit into the schedules for the wing
personnel, and to allow for more options for personnel to “catch
up” on training they may have missed. Formal training exercises
were eventually integrated into the program so that members could
qualify for their ground team specialties by completing the program
without having to go anywhere else. The “Summer” FTX is a
culmination of training and members are evaluated on their skills in
order to become ground team members.
The cadets will test their
skills in a “Survival Olympics” scheduled for Sunday afternoon,
April 6, 2008. You are invited to come and observe our future
leaders. Please contact myself upon arrival to camp site.
The Civil Air Patrol (CAP) was created on
December 1, 1941 and became the official civilian auxiliary of the
US Air Force on May 26, 1948. It's a volunteer organization with
over 60,000 members and has three primary missions: Emergency
Operations (what CAP is best known for), which includes search &
rescue and disaster relief missions as well as Homeland Security
operations; a Cadet Program which teaches young men and women
teamwork, moral leadership, aerospace education, technical skills,
and military history; and Aerospace Education, which teaches
aviation and aerospace principles to cadets and the general public.

Learn Spanish or English
with Rosetta Stone
GLENDALE,
Ariz. – Do you want to go south of the border and converse
with the natives in their language? You can learn how to speak
Spanish with a well-known language-learning program. Or maybe
you could use some assistance in gaining knowledge of English
“Learn a New Language! An
Introduction to the Rosetta Stone Language-Learning Software”
is being held at 4 p.m. on Monday, Mar. 3 in the computer lab of
Velma Teague Branch Library, 7010 N. 58th Ave.
This free program will introduce users
to either the English or Spanish versions of Rosetta Stone.
Participants can then return as often as they like to pursue
mastering the language they want to learn with this self-paced
program.
The library instructors are bilingual
in English and Spanish, so speakers of either language can
discover how the Rosetta Stone works. With this introduction to
the program, users can get off to a more confident start. They
can then proceed at their own pace.
This unique language learning software
teaches language naturally and allows the learner to practice
listening, reading and writing in their new language. The
library computers are not equipped with microphones for
recording and playback ability, but learners can do this from
home if they have remote access to the library’s web site.
Space is limited. Please call
623-930-3437 to register.
Gillian Horton Is the
March Employee of the Month for Glendale Public Library
GLENDALE,
Ariz. – Gillian Horton, a
Library Assistant III at Glendale Main Library, has been chosen as
the March Employee of the Month for the Glendale Public Library
System. Marianna Hancin, Bibliographic Services Administrator,
nominated her.
“Gillian is very deserving of the
Employee of the Month award because of her adaptability,
flexibility and consistent good humor in times of continual
change,” says Hancin. She goes on to say, “The Technical
Services Department frequently reorganizes because of an
ever-changing range of tasks. Gillian is one of those people that
you can always ask to take on a new duty without complaint.”
When asked to describe her job, Horton, a
Glendale resident, laughed that she is “a jack of all trades.”
She is not joking.
Up until a year ago, she was in charge of
the receiving area for the library, plus managing the couriers.
That alone was a full time job. Reorganization put her in-charge
of checking in hundreds of magazines each month, in addition to
her regular duties. Checking in magazines sounds simple enough—until
one considers what is involved. She had to look for title changes,
publication frequency changes, issues lost or damaged in the mail,
subscriptions not arriving, wrong dates on renewal notices,
special issues, unnumbered issues, publishers combining
subscriptions, theft of issues, issues not available, titles
ceasing publication—and the list goes on.
Once she mastered her new role, it
changed. She became involved in payment, invoicing and problem
resolution of serials, but not the daily check-in.
“As problems arise,” says Hancin, “Gillian
settles them quickly. Nothing seems to faze her, and no request is
too large. Gillian truly deserves Employee of the Month for her
outstanding work ethic and willingness to pitch in at any time on
any task.”

Created On:04-Oct-2004 20:53:11 UTC Two
messages of record were launched from the domain's mail server at
Tue, October 5, 2004 4:15 and 4:20 am. One
message was to a friend and mentor at another newspaper and the
other was to the City of Glendale announcing our arrival. Who
would have thought at that time that a scant three years later, almost to
the date of creation, we would be the recipient of the Rocky
Mountain Regional Emmy for Breaking News / Continuing Coverage? At
first we had only still photos up on the pages. We got a PDA to
carry to shoot small stills and use for wireless network studies (
Re: Ed Sharpe Network study for Downtown Glendale Core) At
some point we tried using the PDA to shoot video clips and
there were a few posted of tractors digging up Catlin Court for
utilities and optical fiber. watch>
Balloon Glow 2005 was a real change though. We shot lots of little clips
and then stayed up all night after the fun event and learned how to
use a video editor to make them into a little movie. At this point
the light bulb went on! Soon the staff's interest revolved more
around video work than still work and in fact many times the
stills we did show on the site were single frame pulls from the
video camera!

D.A.R.E. TRUCK WINS BEST IN CLASS AT WORLD OF WHEELS

GLENDALE, Ariz.
– The Glendale Police Department’s 2005 Chevrolet D.A.R.E.
(Drug Abuse Resistance Education) pick-up won 1st place at the
39th annual World Of Wheels car show held at the University Of
Phoenix Stadium this past weekend. (1/12-1/13)
The truck won best in class honors in
the conservative pick-up, 1988 thru 2005 category.
The truck has been extensively customized
by Lucky Luciano’s custom paint and AutoStyle Inc., two local
businesses who donate their time and products to make the D.A.R.E.
vehicles attractive to the kids.
The kids at school see the cool truck
with all sorts of goodies including loud stereos, custom paint and
wheels and even Sony Playstation video games with televisions in
the bed of the truck. This brings the kids to the D.A.R.E. officer
and starts up conversations. The kids then feel at ease and
comfortable approaching the officer and greatly enhances the
relationships between the police and students so they can talk
about drug prevention and staying out of trouble.

– Glendale Firefighters were on hand to offer assistance and
instruction to over 140 Medical Science and Sports Medicine
students of Mountain Ridge High School in Glendale as they
perform triage, assessment and treatment to mass casualty
victims in a mock plane crash exercise.
Over 30 drama students were in
creative make-up and clothing and acted as mass casualty
victims. The gnashing and wailing cries of the mourners that
hovered over the victims whose cries of pain and death
rang out across the field provided excruciating symphony of
reality to the onlooker.
The medical science and sports
medicine students were in groups and guided by firefighters
while they perform their newly acquired medical skills.
“Most of the students who are
taking part in this exercise will seek careers in the medical
profession and this is a great way to give them practical
experience with the help of Glendale Firefighters,” said
Science Teacher Sean Romero.
“We commend Mountain Ridge High
School for arranging this exercise for their students,” said
Glendale Fire Chief Mark Burdick. "We are especially
pleased with these high school students who took the time and
initiative to learn these important life-saving skills,”
Chief Burdick added.
