Kris Steffa from the Glendale  CVB sells  Yvonne Knaack Councilperson for the Barrel District  one of the Civic Pride Christmas ornaments.  Each year the  Civic Pride Ambassadors chooses a Glendale topic to design a keepsake holiday ornament after.  This years  keepsake, the Control Tower at Thunderbird Field, is the 13th in a series of community points-of-pride keepsakes for the Ambassadors.

Thunderbird Tower is one of Glendale’s most significant landmarks and served as the air control tower at Thunderbird Field, an airbase used by the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. By the end of the war, more than 10,000 pilots from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and China had trained there.

Remnants of that earlier time — including the tower, barracks and two airplane hangars — can still be seen at the former airfield, which is now home to Thunderbird School of Global Management, the first graduate management school in the United States focused solely on international business.

The Ambassadors will be selling their keepsakes during a couple of December holiday weekends, Dec. 2, 3, 9 and 10, in downtown Glendale. They are also available year around at the Glendale Convention and Visitors Bureau on Glenn Drive in downtown Glendale.

GLENDALE GLITTERS SPECTACULAR WEEKEND
DESIGNATED OFFICIAL ARIZONA CENTENNIAL EVENT

John Doyle/City of Glendale - Governor Brewer, Mayor Scruggs at Glendale Glitters Opening

GLENDALE, Ariz. – To commemorate the state’s centennial, Governor Jan Brewer was the city’s guest of honor for the opening night of Glendale Glitters on Friday, Nov. 25.

The Governor joined Glendale Mayor Elaine Scruggs and city councilmembers on stage during the Countdown to Glendale Glitters Show at 5:30 p.m. The 30-minute show culminated with the Governor and City Council turning on the 1.5 million lights that cover 16 blocks throughout downtown, creating Arizona’s largest free holiday light display.

Along with the special appearance from the governor, Glendale Glitters Spectacular Weekend has also received designation as an official centennial event by the Arizona Centennial Commission.

“The Arizona Centennial commemoration promises to be a year of celebration, reflection and newfound discovery of Arizona’s most important cultural and historical treasures. Glendale Glitters Spectacular Weekend is the perfect event to have associated with the centennial,” stated Karen Churchard, director of the Arizona Centennial Commission..

In addition to commemorating the state’s 100th birthday, the festival featured elements to celebrate Arizona’s statehood, including a video as part of the lighting show that highlights the centennial; 100 ornaments created by Glendale elementary school students adorned the city’s 30-foot Christmas tree, as well as a large illuminated sign that read “Happy 100th Birthday Arizona.”
