Early Saturday morning, volunteers from across the valley met at
5410 West Palmaire Avenue to work at the Palmaire Court Habitat for
Humanity construction site in Glendale, Arizona.
The first two homes for this subdivision were started on January
8, 2010. Just after the
permits were received, the digging began.
The walls went up on February 6th.
The two new homes were finished in about 20 weeks.
But this area was
to have more than just 2 homes...
"In all 11 homes will be completed, five two-story
duplexes that are connected at the garages and one single family home.
The homes are three bedrooms with an option of a fourth.
Living space is 1,443 square feet.
"Jenny Norton and Bob Ramsey will be providing the funds
necessary for LEED Certify this development.
American Solar has agreed to donate solar panels for each of the
11 homes in Palmaire."

At first, all of the activity, noise and people made the
construction site a little chaotic, that is to the uninitiated eye.
House Leaders (green t-shirts) and Team Leaders (yellow t-shirts)
have things under control. Todd
Buckner, Construction Operations Manager, West Division for Habitat for
Humanity, was on site Saturday morning..
The new homes in Palmaire Court should be completed by this June.

Saturday, April 30 was Leslie Anderson's (white t-shirt and shovel)
first time at a Habitat for Humanity site. Ms. Anderson is about to retire from 31 years in education.
When she arrived at the construction site on Saturday morning she
was not sure what what she could do to help, but she knew she could follow
instructions. She moved a lot of gravel for the new landscaping.

The solar panels will definitely help to lower the new homes
utility bills.

Every new home needs landscaping to make it look and feel like a
home and not a construction site.

When the security fence goes up, the job is just about done for the
day. David Radosevich from
Glendale pounds one of the fence posts into place.
Hard work, but worthwhile judging by the huge amount of positive
energy that was abundant Saturday morning.

Family Biography
The Basha/Elgod family is
currently renting a two bedroom apartment in a location that the family
feels is an unsafe environment
for their 2 young
daughters. The apartment lacks living space and has frequent plumbing
leaks. Also, the apartment is infested
with roaches and is without
a working fire alarm. Mohamed wishes for a functional and sustainable home
that his family can live
comfortably.
Mohamed and Sakina are
originally from Sudan where many families have been displaced due to the
war. They moved to the
United States in 1994 in
hopes for a better life. Mohamed works as an aircraft fueler to provide
for his family and has maintained
this job for over 5 years.
Sakina is a stay-at-home mom who takes care of their two children, Soanja
and Mendy. Soanja, a six
year old, dreams of being a
doctor when she grows up and she is doing very well in school. Mendy is a
thriving one year old! As
a family, they enjoy going
to the park and watching movies.
The Basha/Elgod family
learned about Habitat for Humanity from a friend who told them about how
the organization worked.
Mohamed has always dreamed
of being a homeowner, but could not do so through traditional lending
options. With the generosity
and partnership of his
sponsors, Mohamed will finally be a homeowner and will live without the
fear of not knowing where his
family will go once a lease
agreement comes to an end. The family is grateful to their sponsors and
volunteers who are making
their dream of
homeownership a reality!
