CENTENNIAL BIRTHDAY FINALE - THREE DAYS OF FESTIVITIES

GLENDALE, Ariz. --
Glendale celebrated 100 years as an incorporated city on
June 18, with three days of festivities that ran June 17-19, 2010.
The celebration
started
Thursday the 17th, from 8-9:30 p.m. for the fabulous Centennial
Summer Band Concert at Murphy Park Amphitheater. Citizens
were invited to dance the
night away under the stars while taking a musical journey
through the decades to the tunes of the 100-member band.
Glendale’s Summer Band has been in existence for 44 years,
making it the longest-running-community band in Arizona!
The next day the
excitement builds for Centennial Nite Lights, from 5-9 p.m. in
Murphy Park. Glendale’s 100th birthday will be a party with
activities for the whole family, including a vintage fashion
show, a live performance by One More Time, an ice cream
social, Historic Walking Tours, a classic car show, carnival
games, a historic film festival and much more!

Postmaster to
issue official postmark honoring
Glendale’s centennial at June 18 downtown celebration
Glendale
Postmaster Billy Garrett today along with Glendale Mayor Elaine
Scruggs and the City Council, unveiled a special pictorial
postmark honoring the city’s 100th birthday that was issued during
the celebration ceremony at downtown’s Murphy Park at 5:15
p.m. on Friday, June 18.
"Glendale Post Office
employees have served an important role in our city for the past
century, not only delivering our residents’ mail,"
Garrett said, "but also serving the community as
outstanding, responsible citizens. We’re proud to be part of this
historic occasion."
The anniversary postmark was
available on limited-edition collectible envelopes being offered for
sale by the City of Glendale at the event. The Glendale Post Office
will also sold stamps on-site at the event from 5 to 7 p.m. and the
commemorative postmark was applied to any envelope or other item
bearing First-Class postage stamps.
In addition, customers may request
the postmark for 30 days following the June 18 celebration, either
in-person at the Glendale Main Post Office or by mail. Stamped,
addressed envelopes may be mailed inside a larger envelope to:
Glendale 100 Postmark, Postmaster, 5955 W. Peoria Ave., Glendale, AZ
85302-9998. The postmarked envelopes will be returned via regular
mail.

Miss out? Not
to worry! The special postmark will be available at the
Glendale Downtown Post Office for 30 days following the event,
upon request.

The third and final day
of the Centennial Celebration, Saturday, June 19, was an
opportunity for residents to give back to their city. One
Hundred Hours of Volunteering will involve several community
volunteer projects around Glendale, totaling 100 hours
collectively. The projects included:
Sahuaro Ranch Park:
Volunteers worked with Historical Sahuaro Ranch staff
to assist in organizing and archiving historic properties
and artifacts and work on additional clean up tasks
Glendale Parks:
Volunteers worked with Parks and Recreation staff to
refurbish park facilities by painting and repairing
miscellaneous items
Heart of Glendale
Neighborhood:
Volunteers worked with local residents on a
neighborhood cleanup project
Glendale Main and
Foothills Libraries:
Various volunteer projects at both locations
Glendale’s Centennial
Celebration events are made possible by sponsors that include

Safeway, Ralph’s Ice Wagon and the band One More Time.
