Bruce Dellis on the making of ....   Fuller Elementary PTA

I’ve been a board member of the Fuller Elementary PTA (in Tempe) for the past five years (my daughter, Devany, is now in fifth grade). I was asked to put together a short presentation to encourage parents to get involved in the PTA. It sounded like something that I should be able to knock out in a couple of days – nothing too fancy. Of course, once you start really digging into a project like this, you present yourself with a million options: Serious or funny? Talking heads or narration? Original footage or stock footage? And on and on it goes. Pretty quickly I figured the end product needed to be both fun and informative – and short. My fellow board members made some suggestions about what should be included in the video. I made an outline of all those specific issues, ideas, and concepts and then tried to figure out the best way to present them.

Then it occurred to me that a fun structure for the thing would be to have it mimic the old films we old-timers used to see in grade school – really cheesy and outdated. I realized very quickly that I wouldn’t have the time or money to shoot new footage in that style, so I needed some actual old films. I knew that a good repository for those films is a place called the Internet Archive, which collects all sorts of films that have fallen into public domain. That site is a gold mine of ideas. The only problem was taking the time to watch dozens of potential films for inclusion. I think I ended up using pieces from about 15 different films – not to mention the various photos that were doctored-up in Photoshop. I also went out to the school to shoot some footage that I needed to specifically highlight some of the PTA’s recent accomplishments. Once I had all the elements to support my “talking points,” I re-tailored the script/outline. It took a few evenings to do this since the entire film is almost wall-to-wall, non-stop jabbering. Once I had a final draft of the script, I recorded the narration with some equipment I’d set up on my dining room table.

It took probably 15 hours to edit the piece, which only runs about seven minutes or so. It was edited on my laptop using Adobe Premiere. The theme music for the video comes from another public domain film I found in the Internet Archive – it even has that slight audio “wobble” that 16mm projectors use to have.

In addition to it being available online, we showed it to groups of parents during Fuller’s “curriculum night” toward the beginning of the school year. While there were quite a few folks who found the video very amusing, I think most folks in the audience were actually a bit baffled by it. I know it’s a little odd, but I think that’s why it appeals to me. It’s not everybody’s cup of tea, and I’m perfectly okay with that. I mean, there will always be some people who aren’t going to like any tea at all!

Local Company Wins Two International Video Awards

Telly Awards presented to Digital Video Destinations

Cave Creek, Arizona, October 3, 2008 – Digital Video Destinations has received 2008 Telly Awards for two of their video products. “We are pleased that our ‘Video Postcard from Arizona’ and our scenic DVD, ‘Arizona, A State of Wonder,’ have both won Telly Awards,” said Lee Ann Lankford, owner of the video production company. “Having this recognition from an international competition validates the professionalism and quality of our work.”

Founded in 1978, the Telly Awards is the premier award honoring outstanding local, regional, and cable TV commercials and programs, as well as the finest video and film productions. Winners and finalists represent the best work of the most respected advertising agencies, production companies, television stations, cable operators, and corporate video departments in the world. The Telly Awards is a widely known and highly respected international competition and receives over 14,000 entries annually from all 50 states and many foreign countries.

Digital Video Destinations has been marketing its scenic DVDs for several years, and has recently expanded its offering of video-based products to include four titles of ”video postcards.” They are among the newest innovations in souvenir merchandise. Sealed inside the ready-to-send postcard mailers are DVDs of spectacular scenic video and native wildlife, all enhanced by a light musical background. All of the videos were taped in hi-def, are in wide screen format and play worldwide.

Video postcards titles that are currently available are from: Arizona, Sedona, Grand Canyon and Monument Valley / Canyon de Chelly

“Our world is rapidly becoming more visual than text-based,” said Mrs. Lankford. “So, if it’s true that a ‘picture is worth 1000 words,’ a video postcard will convey the emotional impact of experiencing a place 1000 times better than a flat photograph on a postcard. We’d like to give locals, and visitors alike, the opportunity to share their Arizona encounter with friends and families in a new and more powerful way – with video.” Mrs. Lankford reports that the concept is being well accepted and retailers are excited about offering an old product in a new, more high-tech format.”

Digital Video Destinations is an Arizona-based company specializing in showcasing the beauty and diversity of the Southwest through video products (which will soon be offered in Blu-ray). Products can be purchased online at www.DVDest.com and at many retail outlets as well as national park and forest service bookstores.

Over 1,000 people enjoy the

1st Peoria AZ Film Festival

Ed Sharpe of Glendale AZ , couldn't wait to see his educational documentary/ movie, “ Glendale Fire Department Safety House”, light up a real movie theatre screen Sunday, March 4th.

Sharpe, his family members and friends held their breath awaiting the first cords of music and the opening scene on the giant screen.  "I am extremely excited," said Sharpe, a video journalist for the www.GlendaleDailyPlanet.com & KKAT-IPTV. "I brought my family and invited some friends when I learned it was screening."

wpe64.jpg (16628 bytes)Aspiring filmmakers like Sharpe, screenwriters, actors, producers and residents attended the festival, looking for industry tips, to make new friends and find a good movie to enjoy.

According to Festival Director Helen McCready, more than 1,000 people attended the inaugural event at Harkins Arrowhead 18. Ticket sales raised over $3,000 to benefit the Peoria Chamber of Commerce's new building project.

The four-day event, sponsored by the Peoria Chamber Film Office, screened over 75 films and offered a variety of workshops on filmmaking and related topics. The Festival kicked off Thursday night with a screening of the director's cut version of Forget About It. This 2006 movie stars Burt Reynolds, Raquel Welch, Robert Loggia and Charles Durning.

A discussion with the film's producer and director, BJ Davis, and Robert Loggia  followed the screening. Robert Loggia was  presented with a lifetime achievement award.

UCLA Professor Richard Walter led a screenwriting workshop Saturday morning, well attended by working and aspiring screen writers.

Sunday's educational venue started with "Product Placement, Catch the Media Buzz, and The 'MUST KNOW' of Being A Producer" Conference Q&A.  The panel for the event consisted of; John W. Cones (LA Entertainment Attorney), BJ Davis (Producer/Director), Jan Jacobson (Newspaper Journalist & Radio Show Host), Gay Gilbert (Producer/Casting Director), Elyane Stein (SAG Board Member), RoxanneChaisson (AFTRA Executive Director),  Pete Kelly "Pistol Pete" (Radio Personality - Energy 92.7/101.1),  Dan Manucci (Radio & Television Personality - KTAR News/Talk radio, KDUS/KSLX Radio), John Vasseur (Televison Producer of channel 12 sports show and other projects )

Following the panel discussion participants were also treated to a presentation by Dynamicfilm Producer Brenton Covington and  Bivas Biswas, Founder of D.I.B. Pictures Entertainment. Both presenters have produced and directed multiple award winning films. Attendees were treated to samples of their film work with a question and answer session afterwards.  Festival sponsor and judge Covington emphasized "It's amazing to see so many talented filmmakers who are doing great work out of Arizona ."

The final feature to screen Sunday  was  “THE PHOENIX LIGHTS…WE ARE NOT ALONE”  whereas thousands of Arizona residents also witnessed a parade of mile-wide, V-shaped craft and formations of lights slowly and silently gliding over their heads. Sunday, Peoria Film Festival attendees got to see the movie and discuss it with author/ producer  Dr. Lynne D. Kitei, M.D

McCready said that the festival ran smoothly, but she already has ideas of what to change next time. Included in ideas and fine tuning were; introduce competitions for best commercial and television pilots and next year to schedule the festival on days not coinciding with spring training's opening weekend.

With interest from more sponsors and filmmakers wanting to return next year, the festival will be even larger!

About Glendale Daily Planet / KKAT-IPTV And CouryGraph Productions

Glendale Daily Planet, the parent organization of KKAT-IPTV was started in 2004 as the first community journalism news site in Glendale and perhaps all of Arizona... Serving The Metro West Side of the Valley of the Sun, Glendale Daily Planet has witnessed, participated in and recorded the further rejuvenation of the downtown core, the meteoric rise of the 'Glendale Sports Empire' and the restoration of historic sections of the town.

One aspect Sharpe is most proud of is the ability to have a continuous 24/7 stream of archived footage in the player but yet, when a special event arises, have the ability to go live interrupting the pre-programmed content to cover the event. With the advent of higher speed EVDO radio cards and compact portable satellite terminals the options are limitless.

Residents can now catch stories of interest on their schedule, taking advantage of the on-demand character of Internet media. No more waiting for 5 or 10pm and no need to program the TiVo. Important stories remain available, a mouse click away, for years in the online archives..

In addition to his work With KKAT-IPTV, CouryGraph Productions and the Glendale Daily Planet, Ed Sharpe is the webmaster for MCA-I Chapter 44 in Phoenix Arizona and a member of the national Media Communications Association-International Association.

Sharpe also is a member of  the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS),  Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE), Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ), National Press Photographers Association (NPPA), Southwest Museum of Engineering, Communications and Computation (SMECC) and other associations.

The work of Ed Sharpe from CouryGraph Productions and other participative community journalists and engineering staff may be viewed, 24-hours a day, seven days a week at  http://www.glendaledailyplanet.com/ .
