Arizona needs a State Film Office and a State Film Commissioner 1-16-2014
By -Bette Sharpe/Glendale Daily Planet

A rally was held in downtown Phoenix on the east side of the Arizona Senate building Thursday afternoon to gather support for a bill sponsored by Senator Caryle Begay (Democrat from Legislative District 7 that would give Arizona a state film office and a film commissioner. National and international movie and film makers would be able to contact this office and have access to information on locations, legal requirements, equipment resources, etc. There would be one office to call for information and to help coordinate and make the arrangements. Other states like New Mexico offer tax credits to film productions. So why come to Arizona if there is no one to contact and help coordinate and if your company does not get a tax break.

The economic impact is impressive for New Mexico, for example. The motion picture and television industry provide over three thousand jobs and $131 million in wages for both production and distribution related jobs. Arizona offers no significant tax incentives for production; while New Mexico offers 25% to 35% I tax credit.

This is one of Senator’s legislative priorities.

Office of Film and Media: The State of Arizona currently does not have an office of film and media and cannot be competitive with neighboring states, like New Mexico, to attract this industry to Arizona. Considering the Navajo Nation is home to more than a dozen national monuments, tribal parks and historical sites, and is peppered with a dozen lakes - Lake Powell alone has 186 miles of Navajoland shoreline – tourism is in part a big part of our Navajo economy. Creating an Office of Film and Media would serve as Arizona’s coordinator of production activity to the film and media industry, as an ambassador for the State of Arizona and ideally the Navajo Nation.

It was a pleasant surprise to walk out the door and see this production being filmed today. Since I have a budding interest in video this was a good 'learning experience' for me! Turn the volume way up when you watch this...

Watch the movie below in the player and it will give you an 'inside look' at the filming. Compare this shot to what you will see on the finished show when it airs. - Ed Sharpe

Greetings fellow equipment hoarders, old-timers, and   young history students!,
actors that can look like hippies and old dressed people holding apparatus and narrating, camera people, lighting, composers, etc etc etc.

We are  shooting a video on

HISTORY AND EVOLUTION OF VTRs/ VCRs

Here is what we need....

 - Photos of you in olden times using the equipment (or film of video footage showing you at it) ( it is easier to clear rights on  a photo that someone you now is in rather than a cool photo you manage to buy of ebay..)

 - Any photos  that you have done whereas the  equipment is taken apart showing views  internally form all angles ( yea yea  we can tear ours apart but why re-invent is not needed?)

 - Narratives to use  as voice- overs from "those that used the stuff"

 - I would love to find some of the 16 mm film during Dan Berrigan's Danbury prison release...  We have several  tapes shot from the portapack... BUT   I would live to  have  some film showing this  guy in action that was running the 3400!

 - We will do a real short introduction on the start of tape technology just to introduce the viewer but the purpose of this  production will be to emphasize the history of the Portable Unit.

 - Also  one area that  will receive some treatment is the switch over  from  16 mm  film such as  Cinema products CP16 and  Yoder modified Bach Auricons, again we will not dwell on it but believe it needs to be covered. (does anyone still have their  CP 16 and Iron Maiden chest mount?)

This project will also result in a pictorial section on the museums website as well.

It is good to be back on a history project! We  took a short detour to learn to shoot the news  edit some video...  gather some  friends that are  even better at it than I am  ( although I did manage to pick up a regional news Emmy(R) Award last year    see http://www.glendale dailyplanet. com/2007_ rocky_mtn_ emmy(r)_awards. htm )

Anyone that wishes to be involved I this  from the resource or crew or ??  any capacity is welcome. It will be fun and a way of leaving a record for the future.

responses off list already generate questions!  here are a new more items on this.

We probably need to take into account  early mobile truck contained video also in the Intro

Awards? Accolades and Credits?
People participating will be  awarded such as we acquire them Money?  doubt this will be a money maker.... but... it needs to be done.

Thanks,

Ed Sharpe, Archivist for SMECC

Lights.... Camera!  Bitz-ee Mama's!

Local flavor adds to  highly anticipated  independent film release

the outcome and therefore becomes the ultimate goal for both sides.

For close to 40 years, Bitz-ee Mama's, a restaurant serving both Mexican and  American food,  has been catering to City Council members, judges, newspaper reporters, merchants  and your next door neighbor! This week though,  Bitz-ee Mama's takes on a new role as location for a new movie!

Owner Lulu Rodriguez and co-owner Kristine Ortega embraced the opportunity  to have a movie segment  done at the restaurant.

In addition to playing hosts, Lu Lu prepared the  food that was in the  movie and  and Christina appeared in the movie as a food server.

Lu Lu said "It was neat to see  how well people work together and  to produce a film" she continued "We all worked  until after midnight, the crew was fantastic -  the place was so clean you would have never known they were here."

Tamara McDaniel of the  Phoenix Independent Film Makers Group stated, " The lovely ladies who own Bitz-ee Mama's have been wonderful to work with and very generous, kind and accommodating.  I’m so grateful they’re letting us shoot at their restaurant. The location for this  pivotal scene  was perfect for us both in terms of practical reasons like parking, extra rooms and such, but also the atmosphere was just what we were looking for. "

To bring readers  up to speed on what the many fans of Ellen Muth, star of the acclaimed “Dead Like Me” TV series already know, the focus has shifted from the living room to the big screen as production of her newest movie, “The Nephila” began this week.

Shot entirely on-location in Phoenix and historic downtown Glendale, “The Nephila” tells the story of a fallen angel searching for the ultimate weapon in the battle between good and evil, a nephila, which is a child born of an angel and a human.

Muth plays Rose, the nephila and is joined by top independent film actors Joe Flowers ( Azael) and Kevin Tye ( Raphael) as the feuding angels.

Written by Joshua Mathieson and produced by Tamara McDaniel of the Phoenix Independent Filmmakers Group and veteran producer Jon Bonnell of Infinite Spectrum Productions, “The Nephila” is a product of the vibrant Phoenix indie film community. “We’re very proud that we can attract such talent here”, says McDaniel, “and adding Ellen to our line-up of experienced local cast and crew shows how far independent film has come here in Phoenix”.

The Director of Photography is Joel Kaye.  and hi-tech video image capture is achieved with the use of the  phenomenal ' RED ONE'.

Bitz-ee Mama's restaurant was the production's location for the second day of shooting.

The news of “The Nephila” spread quickly on the Internet and the Ellen Muth fan sites are now buzzing with activity about this new film. “Our goal is to take a fresh approach to such a traditional theme”, says seasoned Director Kevin R. Phipps, “With the action, drama and special effects planned, we’re sure that our audience is in for a heck of a ride.”

The film stars Ellen Muth in the part of Rose – known best for her starring role of George in the hit series “Dead Like Me”, and introducing two fabulous actors from right here in Phoenix, Joe Flowers who is playing Azael and Kevin Tye who is playing Raphael.

Tamera McDaniel sums things up. " We have been so fortunate in all the assistance we’ve gotten – from our local industry professionals to  local vendors and companies – it’s really incredible how things have come together to make this project happen. We have such a phenomenal team I’m continually awestruck by the dedication and whole hearted commitment by every single person in the cast and crew. Our goal is to turn this short into a feature.  "

Release of “The Nephila”  will take place at key film festivals  later this year, followed the making of the production into a full length feature.

Michelle and Tim await the rolling of the  camera....
