Both teams have an 11-1record for the season. The CFU Knights is ranked no. 15 and the Baylor Bears are ranked at no. 6. To achieve such outstanding records, coaches George O’Leary at UCF and Art Briles at Baylor have done a great job. Their records stand for themselves.

As soon as the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl teams were announced team fans started to plan their trip west to Arizona and to Glendale. University of Central Florida is located in Orlando, Florida. Fans of the Knights will be coming from Waco, Texas.

Bette Sharpe/Glendale Daily Planet no. 3649.

The Glendale Convention and Visitor Bureau’s Terry Williams and Loraine Pino are preparing for the big game. The Glendale Visitor Center is now transformed into the Fiesta Bowl Football headquarters in the West Valley, showcasing team colors and décor, including the clocks changing times to reflect the team markets in Orlando and Waco. In addition, the Glendale Visitor Center is preparing information for visitors and sending out Cerreta’s Candy baskets to the schools. The Visitor Center began receiving inquiries from incoming fans as soon as the teams were announced. As of Monday afternoon, the requests from Waco are outpacing Florida requests 10 to 1.

"We are thrilled to welcome these first time teams to Arizona. Fiesta Bowl fans are fantastic and truly passionate about their hometown teams," said Lorraine Pino, Manager of the Glendale Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Visitors to the Glendale CVB who wearing their football team’s apparel will receive a "goodie bag", starting today. Visit the CVB at 5800 West Glenn Drive, Suite 140, Glendale AZ 85301 or call 623.930.4500. Or follow this link: http://www.visitglendale.com/index.html for more information.

Challenge Charter School’s
Celestial Phoenix
Team
rises to the challenge!

CCS takes first place during the December 7th, 2011 Semi—Finals for the
Honeywell Fiesta Bowl Aerospace Challenge and they move on to the finals!

By Wendy Miller -  Principal, Challenge Charter  School Special to Glendale Daily Planet

The Celestial Phoenix Team. Students from left: Patrick Kontz, Colten Warnock, Emmerson Dillard (girl in center),
Richard (Laurie) Cox, and Cavan Lopez. Back row: Ms. Meghan Sheehan, Coach and Ms. Wendy Miller, CCS Principal

The CCS 6th grade Aerospace Team selected the name Celestial Phoenix which turned out to be a perfect fit as they rose to the challenge during the Honeywell Fiesta Bowl Aerospace Challenge Semi-Finals placing first in that day’s competition.

Celestial Phoenix includes: Richard (Laurie) Cox, Emmerson Dillard, Patrick Kontz, Cavan Lopez, and Colten Warnock, with Ms. Meghan Sheehan as their Coach. Mr. Miller also provided support during the design of their lunar habitat and the team had tremendous support from their parents whose volunteer time was greatly appreciated!

Celestial Phoenix had big shoes to fill! They are only the second team to ever compete from Challenge Charter School. Challenge’s first team, NASA’s Newest, won the entire competition and a VIP trip to NASA in Houston, as well as an appearance on the field at the 39th Annual Fiesta Bowl in Glendale. http://www.glendaledailyplanet.com/fiesta_bowl_2010.htm (scroll down page for story)

NASA’s Newest team slogan:  “Last time the Eagle was just a guest, now it’s back to build its nest.” …blazed the path for the truly sensational Celestial Phoenix whose slogan says it all: “The Phoenix is rising to the challenge!” They have their own unique and remarkable team spirit and admirable dedication and persistence.

They showed so much respect for the competition and displayed so much citizenship. The Fiesta Bowl chairperson and the maintenance staff at ASU West (where they competition was held), both complimented them on their behavior and the way they composed themselves during the event rising above their competitors.

They were judged for seven hours, being asked very challenging questions by eight different groups of Honeywell engineers. The team had to defend the decisions they made in designing their lunar base. Despite the demanding schedule, the team was tireless in their energy and never allowed their nerves to show. Instead, they shone with enthusiasm ready to share all their hard work and team collaboration with the judges.

The Honeywell Aerospace mission is to develop and build a physical scale model for an International Lunar Base. Teams must consider all of the details and later defend their choices for their location on the moon, how they will transport the base and get around in space, and how they will sustain life on the moon.

Celestial Phoenix carefully deliberated each detail resulting in a multicultural base with everything needed to keep the astronauts safe and busy. They made us all so proud putting in lots of their own time, unwilling to quit until they had considered all options and were confident that they had made the right choices for sustaining life on the moon, such as production of their own food and a complete recycling program.

The competition included approximately 250 teams comprised of over 900 5th – 8th grade students during the three days of Semi-Finals. Celestial Phoenix, is one of only 6 teams statewide that will move on to compete in the finals December 29th at the Challenger Space Center. As finalists, they will also enjoy an exclusive opportunity to spend time with NASA astronauts.

Congratulations and thank you to an incredible Team and to their families for all of their help and support! Thank you Coach Sheehan for empowering them to take it to the next level! GO EAGLES!!

23rd Insight Bowl

23rd Insight Bowl

Iowa vs. No. 14 Oklahoma

The Iowa Hawkeyes (7-5, 4-4 Big Ten Conference) return to Tempe to defend their 2011 Insight Bowl championship when they face the Oklahoma Sooners (9–3, 6–3) at Arizona State University’s Sun Devil Stadium on Friday, December 30.

The Hawkeyes defeated 12th-ranked Missouri 27–24 in last year’s Insight Bowl that enjoyed a 400 percent increase in television ratings on ESPN and record attendance (53,453).

Iowa Hawkeyes

Iowa appears in its 10th bowl game since 2001. It is bowl eligible for the 11th consecutive season and boasts a three-game bowl winnings streak, a school record.

The Hawkeyes weathered a difficult 2011 schedule that included seven ranked opponents, seven bowl-eligible foes, and six teams that competed in bowl games a year ago. Iowa managed a 4–3 record against the seven ranked opponents, their highest single-season victory total against ranked teams since 2003.

The Hawkeyes also finished in the Big Ten’s first division for the 10th time in the past 11 autumns. They’ve won 85 games over the past 10 seasons, including 50 conference assignments.

Head coach Kirk Ferentz is completing his 13th season at the Hawkeye helm. He is 6–3 in bowl games at Iowa, including wins in four of six January bowl games.

Oklahoma Sooners

The always powerful Sooners have earned 7 national championship trophies, 45 bowl appearances, and 43 conference crowns in their storied history. They entered 2011 as the nation’s top-ranked team, a lofty perch they maintained until mid-season.

They are appearing in their 13th consecutive bowl game dating to 1999 and arrive in Arizona seeking their 33rd 10-win season, a number the leads the nation.

The 2011 Sooners defeated three of five opponents ranked on game day — no. 5 Florida State, no. 11 Texas and no. 10 Kansas State. They toppled the rival Longhorns 55–17 in the “Red River Shootout,” OU’s largest margin of victory in the rivalry since downing Texas 65–13 in 2003.

Bob Stoops reached 100 wins faster than any head coach in the modern era and he remains the nation’s only head coach to take his team to all four BCS games and the national championship contest. The 2012 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl will be his ninth BCS game in 12 years.
