Challenge
Charter School’s
Celestial Phoenix Team
rises to the challenge!
CCS
takes first place during the December 7th, 2011
Semi—Finals for the
Honeywell Fiesta Bowl Aerospace Challenge and they move on to
the finals!
By
Wendy Miller - Principal, Challenge Charter School
Special to Glendale Daily Planet

The
Celestial Phoenix Team. Students from left: Patrick Kontz,
Colten Warnock, Emmerson Dillard (girl in center),
Richard (Laurie) Cox, and Cavan Lopez. Back row: Ms. Meghan
Sheehan, Coach and Ms. Wendy Miller, CCS Principal
The
CCS 6th grade Aerospace Team selected the name Celestial
Phoenix which turned out to be a perfect fit as they rose
to the challenge during the Honeywell Fiesta Bowl
Aerospace Challenge Semi-Finals placing first in that day’s
competition.
Celestial
Phoenix includes:
Richard (Laurie) Cox, Emmerson Dillard, Patrick Kontz, Cavan
Lopez, and Colten Warnock, with Ms. Meghan Sheehan as their
Coach. Mr. Miller also provided support during the design of
their lunar habitat and the team had tremendous support from
their parents whose volunteer time was greatly appreciated!
Celestial
Phoenix
had big shoes to fill! They are only the second team to ever
compete from Challenge Charter School. Challenge’s first
team, NASA’s Newest, won the entire competition and a VIP
trip to NASA in Houston, as well as an appearance on the field
at the 39th Annual Fiesta Bowl in Glendale. http://www.glendaledailyplanet.com/fiesta_bowl_2010.htm
(scroll down page for
story)
NASA’s
Newest team slogan: “Last time the Eagle was just a
guest, now it’s back to build its nest.”
…blazed the path for the truly sensational Celestial
Phoenix whose slogan says it all: “The Phoenix is rising
to the challenge!” They have their own unique and
remarkable team spirit and admirable dedication and
persistence.
They
showed so much respect for the competition and displayed so
much citizenship. The Fiesta Bowl chairperson and the
maintenance staff at ASU West (where they competition was
held), both complimented them on their behavior and the way
they composed themselves during the event rising above their
competitors.
They
were judged for seven hours, being asked very challenging
questions by eight different groups of Honeywell engineers.
The team had to defend the decisions they made in designing
their lunar base. Despite the demanding schedule, the team was
tireless in their energy and never allowed their nerves to
show. Instead, they shone with enthusiasm ready to share all
their hard work and team collaboration with the judges.
The
Honeywell Aerospace mission is to develop and build a physical
scale model for an International Lunar Base. Teams must
consider all of the details and later defend their choices for
their location on the moon, how they will transport the base
and get around in space, and how they will sustain life on the
moon.
Celestial
Phoenix carefully
deliberated each detail resulting in a multicultural base with
everything needed to keep the astronauts safe and busy. They
made us all so proud putting in lots of their own time,
unwilling to quit until they had considered all options and
were confident that they had made the right choices for
sustaining life on the moon, such as production of their own
food and a complete recycling program.
The
competition included approximately 250 teams comprised of over
900 5th – 8th grade students during
the three days of Semi-Finals. Celestial Phoenix, is
one of only 6 teams statewide that will move on to compete in
the finals December 29th at the Challenger Space
Center. As finalists, they will also enjoy an exclusive
opportunity to spend time with NASA astronauts.
Congratulations
and thank you to an incredible Team and to their families for
all of their help and support! Thank you Coach Sheehan for
empowering them to take it to the next level! GO EAGLES!!

41st
Tostitos Fiesta Bowl
No. 3 Oklahoma State vs. No. 4
Stanford
The prolific offenses of no. 3
Oklahoma State (11–1) and no. 4 Stanford (11–1) will
fill the new year’s air with footballs in the 41st
Annual Tostitos Fiesta Bowl on Monday, January 2, 2012 at
University of Phoenix Stadium.
Led by two Heisman Trophy-worthy
quarterbacks — Stanford’s Andrew Luck and OSU’s
Brandon Weeden — the Cowboys and Cardinal rank second
and 11th in the nation, respectively, in total offense,
combining for a staggering 1037.9 total yards per game.
They also combine to score nearly 100 points each outing
— 92.9 per game to be exact.
Besides offense, the pairing also
packs the highest-ranked teams to clash in a Tostitos
Fiesta Bowl since 2003 when no. 1 Miami and no. 2 Ohio
State decided the national championship.
Oklahoma State makes its first
appearance in a BCS game; Stanford makes its third after
defeating Virginia Tech 40–12 in last year’s Orange
Bowl and dropping a 17–9 decision to Wisconsin in the
2000 Rose Bowl.
Stanford never has played in the
Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. Oklahoma State makes its second
Tostitos Fiesta Bowl appearance. The Cowboys beat BYU
16–6 in the 1974 game.
The 20112 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl
will be the first gridiron meeting between Stanford and
Oklahoma State.
Stanford Cardinal
First-year head coach David Shaw
was named Pac-12 Conference Coach of the Year after
leading the Cardinal to a near-perfect season and keeping
his team in the Top 10 for the entire season for the first
time in school history. In fact, Stanford has been ranked
in the Top 10 of the Associated Press poll for 21
consecutive weeks, the longest stretch in school annals.
Riding back-to-back 10-win
seasons is another Stanford first.
Prior to its 28–14 victory over
Notre Dame to conclude its regular season, Stanford
tallied 30 or more points in 14 consecutive games dating
to last season and 40 or more in nine of the 14 outings.
Oklahoma State Cowboys
The Cowboys are riding high after
clinching their first outright conference championship at
the expense of arch rival Oklahoma, a 44–10 victory on
December 3 that also snapped OSU’s eight-game losing
streak against the Sooners.
The Cowboys rode a Top 10 ranking
all season for the first time and produced 11 wins for the
first time during the regular season.
OSU scored at least 50 points six
times, including four times against Big 12 foes (Baylor,
Kansas, Kansas State, Texas Tech). It’s no wonder it

records, hosting six of the 10 largest crowds in school
history.
Oklahoma State has won 10 games
for the fifth time and in two consecutive seasons for the
second time. The first occurred when head coach Mike Gundy
was the Cowboys’ quarterback (1987–88).
OSU’s seniors have been part of
40 victories.

highest single-season victory total against ranked
teams since 2003.
The Hawkeyes also finished in
the Big Ten’s first division for the 10th time in
the past 11 autumns. They’ve won 85 games over the

six January bowl games.

mid-season.
They are appearing in their
13th consecutive bowl game dating to 1999 and arrive
in Arizona seeking their 33rd 10-win season, a number
the leads the nation.
The 2011 Sooners defeated
three of five opponents ranked on game day — no. 5
Florida State, no. 11 Texas and no. 10 Kansas State.
They toppled the rival Longhorns 55–17 in the “Red
River Shootout,” OU’s largest margin of victory in
the rivalry since downing Texas 65–13 in 2003.
Bob Stoops reached 100 wins
faster than any head coach in the modern era and he
