Ed Sharpe, publisher and editor of Glendale Daily Planet and KKAT-TV, was recognized by Glendale City Council at its Oct. 28 meeting for achieving 10 years of service to the community. The online news service began operations Oct. 4, 2004.
Sharpe’s first byline was published in the 1960s in the Palos Verdes, Calif. publication, Daily Breeze.
He served in the U.S. Air Force and it was while stationed at Luke Air Force Base in the 1970s, he was published in the base newspaper, then called The Jet Journal.
Soon, he was shooting photos for publishers of the base paper, Pueblo Publishers Inc., and in the years that followed, he started his own computer company and wrote articles for technical journals, conducted hardware evaluations and researched computer security.
It was 10 years ago when he founded The Glendale Daily Planet. His wife, Bette, a retired librarian for the City of Glendale, has become his chief photographer.
Glendale City Council and Mayor Jerry Weiers presented Sharpe with his proclamation and wished his continued success in the future.
In his acceptance of the proclamation, Sharpe said, “The Glendale Star not only became a place for us to submit our photos and stories, but also a source of mentorship from Bill Toops Jr., publisher, and Carolyn Dryer, editor. One of the most important things Carolyn has taught me is ‘there is always a story out there.’ Yep, it is true. you just have to keep your eyes open.”
