Ed Sharpe director of CouryGraph Productions, who oversees The Glendale Daily Planet - KKAT Streaming TV, Glendale's homegrown Internet video news source, received the Bronze Telly Award as recognition of his programming.

The Telly Award honors outstanding local, regional and national cable TV commercials and programs, as well as video and film productions. The award organization annually showcases the best work of advertising agencies, production companies, television stations, cable operators and corporate video departments.

Sharpe and CouryGraph Productions received the Bronze Award for a 14minute movie documenting The Glendale Fire Department Safety House. Glendale Fire Department Volunteer Dennis Davis, who teaches the fire safety class involving this vehicle, was the subject of the video.

The Telly Awards receives in excess of 12,000 entries each year from 50 states and foreign countries.

"It is honor to receive a highly respected national award for work in publicizing events that take place in the city of Glendale," Sharpe said. "The Telly awards highlight the high standards of excellence we wish to achieve. In addition, it is our wish to provide our viewership with information they can trust and enjoy."

The Glendale Fire Department Safety House trailer was purchased with a FEMA Grant and provides realistic training for youth and adults on escape tactics from burning structures. from the 2006 Davey Awards Competition. The award was given for CouryGraph Productions video Catlin Court Historic Home Tour Home #13, which was narrated by homeowner Tim Quinn.

Tim Quinn and Lori Green have been a significant and driving influence in the improvement of Catlin Court over the past few years. They moved to Catlin Court in 2002 and worked to restore their historic home gaining the admiration of neighbors and even national recognition through HGTV filming of her home.

In addition, Green and Quinn brought the entire neighborhood together to accomplish projects ranging from clean-up drives to obtaining grants for restoration of properties. In addition Green was the recipient of the Ruth Bryne Historic Perseveration award for her work in the Catlin Court Historic District community.

Put the Glendale Daily Planet In your Pocket! Glendale IPTV Station Adopts RSS Personal On Demand Technology

Glendale, AZ -- The Glendale Daily Planet / KKAT-IPTV, an IPTV station owned by Ed Sharpe of Glendale, Arizona, unveiled today the latest technology to be deployed by the station. “Podcasting,” according to Sharpe, “Has been around for a few years. The public first heard of it in connection with Apple’s iPod and iTunes, but the technology goes far beyond that and has recently been referred to as Personal On Demand, or POD casting.  It’s a way for individuals to retrieve the latest news from their favorite sources without having to visit the web site every day to check for new stories.  They are automatically delivered to the individual’s computer, iPod, iPhone or other net capable cell phone.”

The version of this technology deployed by the Glendale Daily Planet was developed in collaboration with Achieve Radio, a 'State of the Art' IP Radio network also based in Glendale.  According to Achieve Radio owner Bill Schreiner, “The engineering teams at the Glendale Daily Planet and Achieve Radio work very closely together.  It’s a natural, since we don't compete for the same markets. The Glendale Daily Planet / KKAT-IPTV    handles Glendale Arizona news video and  online news stories and Achieve Radio does motivational and inspirational  radio programming. From the engineering side, we deal with similar technology on a daily basis.  Achieve Radio has been podcasting radio shows for over 2 years with great success and substantial acceptance from our world wide audience. The advances in personal devices, such as the iPhone and Blackberry, as well as the inclusion of RSS aggregators as standard features in most web browsers, have made video podcasting on a large scale practical and useful to a large percentage of Planet viewers, so we worked together to deploy a video podcast solution for the Planet.”

The use of this technology from the viewer’s perspective, according to Schreiner, couldn't be simpler.  “RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication.  And it is.  A viewer simply adds the RSS, or Podcast,  address to their RSS aggregator, a built in feature in recent browsers and many other soft and hardware devices, and presto, the most recent stories are automatically there, ready to be viewed.”

Both the Glendale Daily Planet and Achieve Radio have offered downloadable audio and video files for years. The new twist is  the use of the RSS ( Really Simple Syndication). Ed Sharpe states that, “This technology is a time saver for our viewers.  It frees them from having to visit our web site to check for new shows and stories.  The headline, a short synopsis and a link to the video are now automatically at the viewers finger tips every day.  They can check for new information on several sites in less time than it used to take to check one.”

Bill Schreiner adds, “Information on demand, in a timely fashion, is what the web is all about, of course.  And this is another step up in that process.

Just think of it... The computer fetches your electronic based news for you, just like your dog brings you the newspaper in the morning!

In addition to his work With KKAT-IPTV, CouryGraph Productions and the Glendale Daily Planet, Ed Sharpe is the webmaster for MCA-I Chapter 44 in Phoenix Arizona and a member of the national Media Communications Association-International Association.

Sharpe also is a member of Sharpe also is a member of  the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS), Society of Broadcast Engineers(SBE), Investigative Reporters and Editors(IRE), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Society of Professional Journalists(SPJ), National Press Photographers Association (NPPA), and other associations.

Glendale, AZ -- The Glendale Daily Planet / KKAT-IPTV, an IPTV station owned by Ed Sharpe of  CouryGraph Productions in Glendale, Arizona, unveiled the latest technology initiative to be deployed by the station. “3D,” according to Sharpe, “Has been around for since before the Civil War. The public first experienced it in the parlors of Victorian era homes as a form of entertainment and education with cards that had two images on them. Viewer consisted of either handheld devices or elaborate table top cabinet style viewers ”

Sharpe continued, " When you would place the card into a special 2 lens viewer you would be able to see a resulting three dimensional image of the scene. How did this get on the card? Easy! It was done with a camera with two lenses separated roughly the intraocular distance of your eyes."

The KKAT-IPTV 3-D   NEWSCAM made its debut at the Country Inn & Suites at 20221 North 29th Ave on January 15, 2008 during a Glendale Chamber Of Commerce Mixer. Regarded with high amounts of curiosity by party goes due to it's off two lens look, Sharpe was besieged with questions about it.

Sharpe states" If you are just going to shoot a line up of people or a city council meeting, the advantage to 3D is not as apparent as if you are videoing cars coming towards you, fists flying towards the lens or parts moving towards the camera in a conveyor belt. In other words… extreme movement is good!”

The version of this technology deployed by the Glendale Daily Planet / KKAT-IPTV was developed keeping in mind that it was desirable for footage shot in this system of 3-D could be re-mastered for any future 3-D methodology. Sharpe elaborates  ”If you have   footage shot with two cameras, it can be used in a 2 color Anaglyph image 3-D system, or later chopped and sequenced into a field sequential viewing system format, or even run to two separate projectors that utilize polarizing technologies to produce the 3-D imagery.”

Anaglyph images are the most popular presentation of 3-D and the one most commonly associated with stereoscopy by the public at large. It is largely popular because of their ease in producing.

In an anaglyph, the two images are either superimposed in an additive light setting through two filters, one red and one cyan, or this process can be done electronically within the video editor. Glasses with colored filters in either eye separate the appropriate images and give you a ‘near real’ color scheme.

The use of this technology from the viewer’s perspective, according to Sharpe, couldn't be simpler. “The viewer just puts on the glasses and looks at the window on the webpage.”

Always willing to share innovative endeavors he is involved in, Sharpe enjoys collaboration and educating others on the technology at hand. Contact Ed and Glendale Daily Planet at http://www.glendaledailyplanet.com for information and  resource links on 3D Technology

The future? Sharpe chuckles…” Probably like the 3-D image of Princess Leila in star wars that R2-D2 projected for Luke to view… no screens no glasses just… the image… but…  it is still a ways off for living room news viewing!”

To learn more on the fascinating history of 3-d still and moving imagery give Google a workout!  You will be entertained for days with the amount of information out there. In is fun to read about the ‘early’ 3-D movies that Hollywood turned out…

The cool KKAT is wearing a new set of shades these days!

About CouryGraph Productions / Glendale Daily Planet / KKAT-IPTV in Glendale, AZ

Glendale Daily Planet, the parent organization of KKAT-IPTV was started in 2004 as the first community journalism news site in Glendale and perhaps all of Arizona... Serving The Metro West Side of the Valley of the Sun, Glendale Daily Planet has witnessed, participated in and recorded the further rejuvenation of the downtown core, the meteoric rise of the 'Glendale Sports Empire' and the restoration of historic sections of the town.

One aspect Sharpe is most proud of is the ability to have a continuous 24/7 stream of archived footage in the player but yet, when a special event arises, have the ability to go live interrupting the pre-programmed content to cover the event. With the advent of higher speed EVDO radio cards and compact portable satellite terminals the options are limitless.
