City wins ‘Best of the West' award for Super Bowl XLII

Super Bowl Host Committee Chairman Mike Kennedy and Mayor Elaine Scruggs hold the “Best of the West” award received from WESTMARC for hosting of Super Bowl XLII. Left to right: Ray Jones, WESTMARC Chairman of the Board; Cathy Gorham, Director of City Manager Relations; Kennedy; Scruggs; Bob Sullivan, President, Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee; and Jack Lunsford, WESTMARC President and CEO.

The City of Glendale was rewarded for its efforts in hosting Super Bowl XLII at the 16th Annual Best of the West awards dinner.

Presented by WESTMARC, a coalition of West Valley advocates, the awards honor West Valley businesses and community and civic leaders in categories ranging from individual leadership to innovative architecture. The event, held at the Glendale Renaissance Hotel, was attended by nearly 800 business and community leaders and elected officials.

Walt Kallestad, senior pastor at Community Church of Joy, gave the invocation. Kallestad reminded the audience of one of the West Valley's greatest leaders and innovators, John F. Long, who died earlier this year. The Best of the West's top award recognizes the late West Valley developer with its John F. Long Lifetime Achievement Award.

Kallestad called Long a “humble, honorable man who gave so much to this community.”

“Thank you for his family. Thank you for his friends,” Kallestad said. “We thank you we have the privilege of living in one of the greatest communities in the greatest country in the world.”

The City of Glendale was recognized for hosting Super Bowl XLII under the Best of the West Sports category.

Mayor Elaine Scruggs accepted the award along with Super Bowl Host Committee Chairman Mike Kennedy.

Scruggs remarked about the 95 million people who watched what many have called the greatest Super Bowl ever.

She said, “It was a remarkable Super Bowl in many ways.”

Scruggs praised the West Valley Public Safety Coalition, which involved several West Valley cities working in cooperation with Glendale public safety officials to create a public safety command structure. The city also made sure security measures were taken, and transportation was in place as well as volunteer opportunities made available to enhance the Super Bowl experience.

In the Attractions, Destinations and Tourism category, the city's new X-court received an honorable mention. The city's 25th Anniversary Jazz & Blues Festival also received an honorable mention in the Arts, Culture and Entertainment category.

Westgate City Center received the top award for Architectural Innovation while Arrowhead Towne Center won the top award for Attractions, Destinations and Tourism.

Banner Thunderbird Children's Center neonatal expansion received an honorable mention in the Service to Communities Health and Wellness category.

The Chairman's Award is presented to “an individual, organization, or event which is so extraordinary that it merits special recognition.”

This year, the Chairman's Award went to Leland Peterson for his nearly 40 years of leadership at Sun Health demonstrating “exemplary healthcare leadership and always being focused on doing what is right for patients.”

The John F. Long Lifetime Achievement Award “honors a person, organization, business or entity that has exemplified outstanding service by contribution to the lifestyle to Western Maricopa County.”

WESTMARC paid special tribute to John F. Long, “with special hope of introducing new Valley residents to the vision and legacy of Mr. Long.”

Herman Orcutt, principal of The Orcutt Winslow Partnership, received the 2008 John F. Long Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his career as “a major contributor of time and talent to the landscape of the West Valley.”

Long's son, Jake, presented the award named for his father to Orcutt.

WESTMARC President and CEO Jack Lunsford said, “Herman Orcutt and Lee Peterson have for decades provided tremendous leadership for the West Valley. And for WESTMARC in particular, their fingerprints are all over our success.”

Cover-Up: Mystery at the Super Bowl

John Feinstein's mystery, Cover-Up: Mystery at the Super Bowl might feature two fourteen-year-olds, but it's a timely, and topical, book. Feinstein created an imaginary Super Bowl XLII, set in Indianapolis, instead of Glendale, Arizona. The featured teams are the Baltimore Ravens, and the "Dreams." And, he thrusts his two young reporters into the midst of a current scandal, steroids.

Stevie Thomas and Susan Carol Anderson are young journalists who have covered the U.S. Open and Final Four. As a result, they were given a television show, Kid-Sports, with an all-sports cable network. When Stevie is let go on the eve of the Super Bowl, a Washington newspaper, and CBS, ask him to work for them. Stevie and Susan set out to cover a sporting event, but once again, as at previous events, they find themselves uncovering a story when a doctor lets it slip that some of the Dreams failed a drug test.

As always, John Feinstein does a wonderful job bringing a national sporting event to life. He is knowledgeable about the events, and the people involved. His inclusion of celebrities helps to bring realism to the stories. Feinstein mentions celebrities such as Wayne Gretzky, Tom Cruise, Bob Costas, and Billy Joel. Everyone has an interest in the Super Bowl. Cover-Up is a fascinating glimpse behind the scenes of the Super Bowl, with a recognition of some of the problems that go hand-in-hand with the enormous amounts of money involved in sports. It's a fascinating mystery, with two likable characters, slimy villains, and perfect timing.

300-POUND CHOCOLATE FOOTBALL DECORATED
FOR SUPER
BOWL WITH GIANTS, PATRIOTS GARB

Kaitlin Thompson (white shirt) - Mountain Ridge HS - Senior,  Jacqueline Barela (green) - Ironwood HS - Freshman,   Ashley Johnson (black) - Mountain Ridge HS - Senior,    Maricia Cerreta, Cerreta Candy Company

Local high school students and Glendale's own chocolatier, Cerreta’s,
decorated this 300 pound
chocolate football.

Wednesday, Jan. 30, 11:00 a.m. Historic Downtown Glendale,
 Cerreta’s Candy Company, 5345 W. Glendale Ave.

Today possibly the world’s largest chocolate football was created for the Super Bowl and decorated in honor of the two teams, the New York Giants and the New England Patriots.

This monstrous, solid piece of chocolate weighs more than 300 pounds and measures six-by-nine feet!  The giant chocolate football will be raffled during the Glendale Chocolate Affaire to support the Glendale Mayor’s Youth Advisory Commission, a community service organization coordinated by Mayor Elaine Scruggs.

GLENDALE , Ariz. – Charlie may have gotten the chocolate factory, but a local high school teacher took home the sweetest prize from this year’s Glendale Chocolate Affaire. The world’s largest chocolate football was raffled at the annual Glendale event to support the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Commission (MYAC), a community service organization coordinated by Mayor Elaine Scruggs.

Cerreta’s Candy Company created the 300-pound, six-foot-by-nine-foot chocolate football to honor the two Super Bowl teams, the New York Giants and New England Patriots.

The lucky winner, Ryan Taylor, a PE teacher and track coach at Independence High School , had a choice between a gift certificate from Cerreta’s or 300 pounds of chocolate. Coach Taylor opted to take home the chocolate, which was packaged up in 30 10-pound chocolate bars.

The world’s largest football will remain on display at Cerreta’s. During the week leading up to the Glendale Chocolate Affaire, MYAC students sold raffle tickets, raising more than $1,200.

The Mayor’s Youth Advisory Commission is a working group of Glendale teens from all high schools in our city, as well as public and private schools outside the city. Each year, the teens plan community projects, a Teen Town Hall and Student Government Day.

But what is to happen to the 300 lb football?

Sent to city <2/13/2008 11:36:19 A.M. US Mountain Standard Time>

YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST!     We as a city need display  commemorating our first Super Bowl and  this  should be in it... Contact Cerreta's lets find a place and I have taken the liberty to send this to my fellow archivists here and abroad to see how the heck to preserve it.

----Ed Sharpe GDP/KKAT-IPTV but also an archivist...

Reports are coming in... it has been suggested...

"OK, I see a giant conclave of Archivists called together to deal with this unique problem.  We close the door to the room so we can meet in peace ..... When we finally open the door, I guarantee you the problem will be resolved -- and no more football.

 Chocolate? WHAT Chocolate?"

Is it milk chocolate or dark chocolate? For dark, I'll travel to the conclave.

Eat it. People who want to create things for long term life don't
use chocolate. You could always make a 300lb plaster cast of it.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I have chocolate on my
waistline that has been there for 25 years. If we split the football
among us, I can guarantee that the part that I eat will be preserved
for the rest of my life!

Take a picture, then send pieces to fellow archivists...  ;-)

Grand idea.

Incidentally, this issue has sparked lively discussion in my office about the nature and definition of "document".  I would say that the chocolate football is a document on a variety of levels, though not meant to last; ephemeral.  Yes?

Hi, Ed,

I get similar questions on a somewhat regular basis. The football's enemies will be heat, dampness, mold, and insects. Oh, and small children (and large children and any other chocoholics). You need to keep it in a cool place so it won't melt, and also have it in some sort of container to keep out mold and insects. A display case in an air conditioned museum would work, with someone checking it occasionally to make sure it isn't developing any mold.

However, as Sonny suggested, photographs might be the best way to preserve it.

(one of my most recent questions along these lines involved someone who had decorated a fancy birthday cake for a friend, and the friend thought it was so beautiful she wanted to keep it forever and ever......Talk about your mixed media!)

Christine

Don't laugh: this is an issue already faced by art conservators; take, for example, Janine Antoni's work "Lick and Lather," which consists of busts of the artist--executed in soap, and in chocolate.

http://www.artnet.com/artwork/424319970/683/lick--lather.html

Antoni is not alone in her use of chocolate:

http://blogs.usyd.edu.au/bizart/2006/09/the_art_of_chocolate.html

Beak it up and send it to the homeless for Valentine’s Day ….

Archive chocolate?  Are you crazy?  My motto is "Give me all your chocolate and nobody gets hurt!"

A true choco-holic

I'm not sure how you would deal with the size of the object, but you might check this article for help with the chocolate aspect.

Abstract: Contemporary artists' work in chocolate, and their reasons for using this medium, are summarized. The likely composition of chocolate is then described: cocoa butter, sugar, vegetable fats, and sometimes wax or milk. Some of these materials migrate easily through the chocolate, and can appear as a bloom on the surface; this indicates adverse changes to the physical properties of the bulk chocolate. Passive conservation is important: storage at 20-21°C and 40-50% relative humidity (RH) is recommended, rather than a lower temperature which requires more rigorous RH control. Insect attack is always a danger, and acceptable ways of treating infestations are discussed. Mechanical cleaning of chocolate surfaces is possible, and surface cleaning with water, ethanol, or a nonpolar solvent are possibilities, depending on the amount of bloom and the porosity of the surviving chocolate.
Some might suggest making a facsimile and eating the original. :-)

I hate to say it but being from Hershey they are more inclined to save the wrappers and packaging than they are the actual chocolate!!  If you’ve ever been to the museum it is less about chocolate and more about Hershey the man, Native Americans, and local culture.

Governor Napolitano and Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee
Unveil Countdown Clock, Official Super Bowl Logo,
Statewide Outreach Program, and Mascot

GLENDALE, Ariz. – With Super Bowl XLI now in the record books and Arizona officially on the clock for Super Bowl XLII on Feb. 3, 2008 at the Glendale Media and Conference Center in Glendale, Governor Napolitano and the Host Committee today unveiled the countdown clock for Super Bowl XLII, as well the official logo and theme, and the Host Committee’s new mascot, ‘Spike the Super Ball.’™

“Now that Arizona is on the clock, the Host Committee is thrilled to introduce our mascot, Spike, and our eye black campaign to help mobilize the entire state of Arizona, as we step onto the world’s center stage with Super Bowl XLII,” said Host Committee Chairman Mike Kennedy.

The AZSBHC today held a press conference at the Glendale Media and Conference Center to announce several key components of its outreach and planning strategies for Super Bowl XLII. These are outlined below and include: the Official Countdown Clock, the official Super Bowl XLII logo and theme, “Who Wants It More?,” its “Join the Team” campaign, as well as Spike the Super Ball, the official AZSBHC mascot.

School children from Phoenix’s NFL Youth Education Town Elementary Academy (Espiritu) (the NFL’s Youth Education Town legacy project associated with Arizona’s Super Bowl XXX) assisted Arizona Cardinals Vice President and General Counsel Michael Bidwill and Host Committee Chairman Mike Kennedy as they unveiled the Official Arizona Super Bowl XLII Countdown Clock. The large (7.5 feet wide by 3.3 feet tall) Countdown Clock that weighs 196 lbs. will be located in Terminal 4 of Sky Harbor International Airport, so travelers can count down the days, hours, minutes and seconds until Super Bowl XLII.  A smaller version of the Countdown Clock will also appear in the offices of the Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee, located in the World Headquarters of Cold Stone Creamery in Scottsdale.

AZSBHC CEO Debbie Wardrop unveiled the NFL’s official logo for Super Bowl XLII. The new logo displays many of the design components that the Host Committee recommended to the NFL in meetings last June. It is composed of the state of Arizona flag and the number 42 in roman numerals.  The official NFL theme for Super Bowl XLII is “Who Wants It More.”  In many instances, the logo and theme will appear together leading up to the big game.

AZSBHC Chairman Michael Kennedy introduced its new “Join the Team” eye-black campaign—aimed to encourage Arizonans to get involved with the Host Committee Super Bowl programs such as its Membership Club, Volunteer Program and Emerging Business Program. Everyday people from a wide variety of professions, cultural backgrounds, and age groups will be pictured with the eye-black in campaign materials, demonstrating how every Arizonan can be an important part of the team bringing Super Bowl XLII to Glendale in 2008.  Actual members of the Host Committee’s Membership Club will also appear in the pictures. Eye-Black campaign posters and billboards now appear around the state.

Spike the Super Ball, the official mascot of the Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee, was introduced today at the press conference by Host Committee President Bob Sullivan. Spike burst through a break-away banner to the delight of the children in attendance from Phoenix’s Espiritu NFL Youth Education Town. Shaped like a real football, with sun glasses, white gloves and blue tennis shoes, Spike handed out T-shirts to the kids and posed for group pictures. Judging by the reaction of the children at the press conference, Spike is sure to become popular with sports fans of all ages over the course of the next year.

The first stop on Spike’s tour will be at the Phoenix Children’s Hospital at 2:30p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 7.  He will then embark on his year-long, 42-city tour of Arizona; Spike’s first community appearance will be at the Parada del Sol Parade in Scottsdale on Saturday, Feb. 24.

The Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee is a private, not-for-profit Arizona corporation that serves as a liaison with the National Football League in organizing local efforts and preparations leading up to the Super Bowl. It has the responsibility to implement Arizona’s action plan for Super Bowl XLII, which culminates with the game on February 3, 2008 at Cardinals Stadium in Glendale.

Spike the Super Ball -- Arizona Super Bowl XLII Team Captain

In the fabled history of professional football, there have not only been many great football players, but many great footballs as well. And Spike the Super Ball can trace his genealogical lineage to some of the all-time great pigskins.

His grandfather Spalding soared to greatness with Bart Starr in Super Bowl I. His Uncle Rawlings will forever be linked to Lynn Swann’s dramatic, diving catch that help the Steelers clinch the ‘76 Super Bowl.  And his brother Wilson Jr. traveled 48 heart-stopping yards off the foot of New England Patriot Adam Vinatieri to win Super Bowl XXXVI.  With that kind of heroic football heritage in his seams, it’s little wonder Spike has developed into the charismatic point man and team captain for Super Bowl XLII.

Spike was born and raised in the heart of Arizona and attended Spiral High School where his innate talent was nurtured. After winning a full scholarship to the prestigious Pigskin University, he was named “Football of the Year” for an unprecedented four years in a row. With his natural talent and unparalleled work ethic, it wasn’t long before he was scouted by the National Football League and began a high-flying career competing in both conferences.

Spike the Super Ball is honored to have been chosen as Team Captain for Arizona Super Bowl XLII. He looks forward to his exciting, upcoming Arizona 42 town tour as he counts down the days to big game.

Spike the Super Ball’s Super Tour of Arizona

42 Stops on the Road to Super Bowl XLII

Year Long Campaign:

Beginning this month, the Arizona Super Bowl XLII Host Committee will launch a 12-month campaign to generate awareness about the Host Committee and to unite the community in support of Super Bowl XLII.  Spike the Super Ball, the official team captain of the Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee, will lead the campaign, making a 42-stop tour of Arizona communities displaying the official game ball for Super Bowl XLII. The final stop of the tour will be in Glendale on February 3, 2008, where he will deliver the game ball to the University of Phoenix Stadium and help open The NFL Experience.

At each town along the Super Tour, Spike will present the Super Bowl XLII game ball to the community, bringing a piece of the excitement to that town and affording everyone the chance to take-part in the super action. The game ball will play a role in local events, such as parades and festivals, and interactive experiences featuring food, prizes, and entertainment will be included at tour stops. The game ball will then be displayed at a local community center or landmark until moving on to the next city.

First Stops:

The first stop on Spike’s tour will be at the Phoenix Children’s Hospital on February 7th at 2:30PM, where he will visit with patients, and spread excitement about Super Bowl XLII.  His second stop, and first community event, will be at Parada Del Sol parade in Scottsdale on Saturday, February 24th.

At the conclusion of the Super Tour, a commemorative ball autographed by players and stamped with the official Super Bowl XLII and AZSBHC logos will be given to each city on the tour as a legacy.

An interactive map of Arizona will track Spike the Super Ball’s Super Tour and will be featured on the Host Committee’s website, www.azsuperbowl.com.

the “Join the Team” Campaign

Promoting Community Involvement and Participation in
the Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee Membership Club

The Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee‘s new “Join the Team” campaign encourages Arizonans to get involved with efforts for Super Bowl XLII.  Everyday people from a wide variety of professions, cultural backgrounds and age groups will wear eye black (just like NFL players wear under their eyes) to show their support of, and excitement about, Super Bowl XLII.

Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee Membership Club

The purpose of the Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee Membership Club is to help fans learn more about, and become actively involved with, the planning of Super Bowl XLII. The game will take place on Feb. 3, 2008. Those who join the Membership Club receive official Host Committee merchandise, special offers and monthly raffle prizes – including a chance to win two tickets to Super Bowl XLII.  Special contests, events and opportunities surrounding football in Arizona are created and exist only for members. They also receive a monthly e-newsletter from the Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee, keeping them apprised of all the news and events associated with Super Bowl XLII.  And every month the Host Committee raffles off a prize that one lucky member wins.  Past prizes have included ‘Stay and Play’ golf and accommodation packages from Fort McDowell resort, as well as a year’s supply of ice cream from Cold Stone Creamery.

Arizona Cardinals kicker Neil Rackers is the official spokesperson for the Membership Club; the Membership Club was officially launched on Sept. 25, 2006. Membership Club members have been invited to exclusive Super Bowl events, including the press conference launching the club.  There are three ways to sign up for the Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee Membership Club: on the Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee’s official website, www.azsuperbowl.com; by calling 1-888-644-0217; or by visiting one of the Host Committee’s two kiosks set up on the lower concourse level at Cardinals Stadium during all Arizona Cardinals home games this year.

IMPORTANT TRAFFIC INFORMATION FOR SUPER BOWL

GLENDALE, Ariz. – ‘Ready, Set and Go’ is a key message the Glendale Transportation Department is driving home to those who are planning on heading to the city of Glendale for Super Bowl-related events in the stadium area as well as the Super Bowl XLII game, which is Sunday, Feb. 3.

This slogan was designed to increase awareness of important traffic information and help fans prepare for their commute to and from the stadium. READY means to gather as much information about parking, traffic and routes to the destination; SET encourages people to set their Web site home page to www.glendalesgotgame.com to gain access to all of the latest traffic and transportation information; and GO stands for go early to the game and call 511 for traffic updates on the way to the stadium.

Here is what drivers need to be aware of Super Bowl Pre-week.

Beginning Jan. 22, limited road restrictions will go into effect. Restrictions include a road closure at 95th Avenue, north of Bethany Home Road and south of Maryland Avenue in both directions. Periodically, there will be closures at 95th Avenue between Maryland Avenue and Hanna Lane as well as west of 93rd Avenue to 95th Avenue on Maryland Avenue. These restrictions will be in place to safely move pedestrians to the NFL Experience.

For those fans traveling to Glendale for the NFL Experience or the Pepsi Smash Super Bowl Bash, general parking is available north of the stadium off both Glendale and 91st avenues. Drivers are encouraged to follow the signs to the parking lots. Heavy traffic is expected in the area of Loop 101 between Northern and Camelback. Visit www.glendaleasgotgame.com for details on the NFL Experience times of operation.

The public transit bus system is offering extended hours and frequency for Routes 70, 59 and 67 the week before Super Bowl, as well as on game day. Visit www.valleymetro.org for more information.

Glendale Express, the shuttle service that provides transportation from historic downtown Glendale to the Sports and Entertainment District, has extended its hours the week before Super Bowl. Hours of service will be 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. from Saturday, Jan. 26 to Saturday, Feb. 2.

Here is what drivers need to be aware of for game day.

Parking passes for game day can be purchased at www.clickandpark.com. Fans should follow the parking instructions on the back of the parking pass and display the pass in the windshield. If a parking pass is not pre-purchased, cash parking is available at Kellis High School, located at 91st Avenue and Orangewood. Parking lots open at 9 a.m.

Road restrictions and closures will be in place on both Maryland Avenue and on 95th Avenue next to the stadium. Heavy traffic is expected on Loop 101 between Northern and Glendale avenues, as well as on Glendale Avenue.

There is no pick-up/ drop-off for vehicles or shuttles on the day of the game. Taxis only may pick-up and drop-off in the White Lot. There are also no in and out privileges in any of the paid/pass parking lots.

In order to keep traffic moving, the Glendale Transportation Department will offer several traffic enhancements such as reversible lanes and dual turn lanes. A reversible lane will be put in place on 91st Avenue between Camelback and Bethany Home roads. Additional turn lanes will be provided along 91St Avenue between Northern Avenue and Camelback Road. Drivers are encouraged to follow signs and use all available lanes.

For complete information on all of the city’s efforts, visit http://www.glendaleasgotgame.com.
