Division Chief Alex Morales front, with other fire fighters behind examine under SUV while  bag raises vehicle up so firefighters can  get under it

Christine Figueroa came down from her office was surprised to find firefighters extracting a kitten from under her SUV.

Wednesday November 7th in the Bank of America building at 5800 w Glenn in downtown Glendale Arizona The cries of a kitten were heard by a passer by and reported to the Glendale Fire Department.

The fireman responded to the call for assistance and used inflatable air bags to be able to raise the SUV so they were able to reach up under the SUV just to get into the area the kitten occupied..

Once they had the physical clearance to reach the kitten, they extracted it and they wrapped the kitten in a blanket to prevent it from going further into shock.

Each Glendale Fire truck is equipped with a "FIDO BAG" that contains oxygen, various sized oxygen masks for different sized animals, a water bowl blanket and other first air supplies to assist a pet in need.

The Kitten received the benefit of the FIDO BAG's Blanket, Oxygen and water bowl as fire fighters stove to ease little kitty's pain and shock.

A survey of the kittens condition was taken , and  it was determined there were some little burns a broken leg and other minor scrapes.

The “Fido Bag” was unveiled April 11th, at the Sun Valley Animal Shelter located at 7150 N. 110th at 10:00AM. The “Fido Bag” contains the necessary medical equipment to provide oxygen, treat burns, and provide treatment for the injured pets.

Deputy Chief Elio Pompa, for the Glendale Fire Department explained: "Each year the Glendale Fire Department responds to house fires where family pets are unable to escape the flames, suffer severe smoke inhalation and burns. Many pets do not survive these fires".

With the addition to each truck of this  rescue bag, many more pets are sure to survive.

Christine Figueroa, who owned the SUV took the kitten to Palm Glen Animal Hospital for evaluation. It was confirmed that the tiny kitten did indeed have some burns, which are easily recoverable but also a badly broken front leg that will need to be amputated. According to employee Joyce Darra, who will adopt the tiny kitten, " Kittens seem to adapt to having only three legs"

Deputy Fire Chief of Community Services Chuck Montgomery stated: "Fire fighters value all life and are privileged to relieve suffering when able."

Betty Webb at the Velma Teague Library

As part of the Authors at the Teague series, Betty Webb, author of the Lena Jones mysteries, appeared at the Velma Teague Library, discussing what Publishers Weekly calls her, "Mysteries with a social conscience."

Betty said she worked in journalism for twenty years, and they didn't allow her to make things up. She wanted to make things up. While reviewing books for the newspaper, she found herself looking for the mysteries, so she decided she wanted to write mysteries. There was a fellow member of her critique group who was too sweet and too nice, and just couldn't kill people in her writing. She'd put them in a coma, and Betty kept telling her she needed to kill someone. While trying to figure out who she wanted to kill, she and her husband, Paul, went to a Scottsdale Art Show. When she said to Paul, "Someone should kill that gallery owner," he replied, "There's your dead body." She went home and wrote the first chapter of Desert Noir. However, she didn't know why the gallery owner was killed or who solved it. She needed to know who was going to solve the crime. Since it was her first book, Webb was still trying to decide if she would write grizzly books, or lighter, cozy or traditional mysteries in the style of Agatha Christie.

Her character, Lena Jones, came to her in a dream. Lena was found at the age of four, lying at the edge of a Phoenix road, Thomas Road, with a bullet in her head. She was in a coma for months, and when she came out of it, she couldn't remember anything, where she was from, who her parents were, or what happened to her. She had some brain damage, which led to some behavior problems. The behavior problems made her unadoptable, so she grew up in foster care, where she was raped, abused, and malnourished. However, she survived to get a scholarship to Arizona State University where she studied police science. After graduation, she worked for the Scottsdale Police Department, until she was shot on the job. When she was offered a desk job, she decided to open her own detective agency, Desert Investigations, in Scottsdale. After having that dream, Lena became the daughter Betty Webb never had, and she wanted to do a series about her, beginning with Desert Noir, the story about the murder of that Scottsdale gallery owner.

In the Desert series, Lena Jones is looking for her biological parents and her background. Webb said, mystery writers work out their hostilities by killing people in their books, but mystery writers are really sweeter than romance writers who can't take out their frustrations in their writing. She said romance writers are the rough and tough ones.

Betty Webb said she first found out about the problem of polygamy in the American Southwest when she saw an AP story out of Washington. She started to check it out, and took trips to the Utah border because most of the Arizona polygamy colonies are up there, towns such as Colorado City. She met Flora Jessup, a former sister wife who escaped, and now speaks out against polygamy, and helps other girls escape. She wrote Desert Wives, which has been optioned for Lifetime TV, but not filmed yet.

Polygamy is not about religion. If a man takes ten wives, who are not really wives, but concubines, and has ten children with each, he has one hundred illegitimate children. What do illegitimate children get? Welfare checks of $250 a month per child, and the money goes to the Prophet. That's the money that has made Warren Jeffs a millionaire, money from breeding girls for their lifetime. The Prophet moves girls from other households. Warren Jeffs built the compound in Ed Dorado, Texas that has been in the news. All that welfare money goes to Jeffs. Polygamy is about money, which is part of the story of Desert Wives. The families are interbred, which means 65% of the kids are genetically damaged, but the Prophet doesn't care, as long as the girls can breed. At eighteen, the boys are dumped out of the compound, and become the Lost Boys. The can't read or write, and are dumped in Phoenix, Flagstaff and Salt Lake City. In Texas, they work construction until eighteen, but they actually work for script that is redeemable only in compound stores. So, when they're turned out at eighteen, they still have no money. In Desert Wives, Lena masqueraded as a sister wife.

While researching, Betty learned that polygamists are racists who pass out flyers at shows, such as survivalist shows. She checked out publishers of racist materials, and found there is a big market for publishing flyers, books, video games, and recordings. In her next book, Desert Survivors, Webb asks, what kind of person would own a publishing company that published racist material.

Desert Run came about because Webb lives near Papago Buttes, where there was a prisoner of war camp for Germans during World War II. On Dec. 24, 1944, twenty-five Germans dug a tunnel under the stockade to escape with a collapsed boat. Why a boat? Because their map showed rivers, which are actually dry river beds in Arizona. They were all members of U-boat crews, who thought they would sail out Cross Cut Canal.. When they discovered the canals were dry, they abandoned the boat, and spread out through the desert. They eventually all surrendered.

Betty Webb calls Desert Run her Glendale, AZ book. In her story, after the war, several of the German men came back, and moved to Glendale. One is still alive in the book, and Lena makes a trip to interview him. She's early one day, and goes through Glendale's antique stores. She's been living in a furnished apartment, and has never taken interest in her home, which is common with foster children. But, in one store, she sees a lunch pail with Roy Rogers, and buys it. She finds a Lone Ranger and Tonto bedspread, and by the time she leaves, she bought an apartment full of 50's and 60's cowboy furniture.

All of Webb's books start with a body because she said she likes to kill people. In Desert Run, Lena finds the body of a ninety-four year old man, a former prisoner. This is Lena's first cold case, a contemporary murder tied back to a murder during the WWII escape.

Desert Cut is Webb's new book, which has already gone through its first printing. Everyone knows about the illegal immigration problem in the United States. But, there's also a serious problem with legal immigration. Americans have big hearts, and they, and church groups, bring in people who have been displaced by war or famine. However, we've brought in groups that have beliefs that little girls are of less value than goats, and some of the beliefs are terrible. Some of their practices should not be continued in the U.S., but the groups that brought them in might not have known enough about the culture when they brought them. Now, some bulletins published even say it's not child abuse, it's cultural. Betty Webb said she first heard about it from an article about a court case in Atlanta, Georgia. There are severe child abuses against little girls, usually between the ages of 2 and 9, with the biggest group under seven. They call it a "rite of passage," and it's done with anesthesia, with antiseptic aftercare. The purpose is to make a girl a faithful wife.

Webb said her publishers were leery about the subject, but Desert Cut was published on Feb. 15, and the first edition has sold out. It received a starred review in Booklist, a magazine for librarians. Webb said, "Reach librarians, and you reach the world." You reach people once librarians find out about an issue. Then you'll get the word out.

For her research, she talked to people online who were fighting against the custom. Two Somali women, who were fighting against it, were found dead, deaths labeled "accidental." She said the custom is popular in African and Mideastern countries. Webb said France has had a large number of problems, and they've been arresting people, and prosecuting.

The next Lena Jones mystery, "son of Desert Wives," will come out in Fall 2009, Desert Lost. It's about the lost boys and urban polygamy, polygamy in the Phoenix area and the Valley.

Webb started another book at the time she was writing Desert Cut, because that one was so traumatic. She started a warmer, lighter mystery, which will be published this November. Webb volunteers at the Phoenix Zoo, and she loves zoos. The first book in her zoo series is The Anteater of Death, again from Poisoned Pen Press. Betty said there's an anteater named Jezebel at the zoo, and she's a Code Red animal. Code Red means, if it escapes, its shot on sight. Why is an anteater dangerous? When it stands on its hind legs, and balances on the tail that is as strong as a kangaroo's, it has four inch long claws that can dismember a jaguar. When a body is found in the anteater's enclosure, torn apart, the zookeeper, a woman named Teddy, thinks the anteater was framed. The zoo is on the California coast, and Teddy lives on a houseboat. The first and last chapter of every book in the series will be told from an animal's point of view. However, Webb isn't trying to make the animal anthropomorphic. The books will be about animals that the reader wouldn't normally associate with death.

Betty Webb said she wrote her first mystery at 56. There are no big issues in her new series. Webb likes big issues, so she'll continue to write the Lena Jones books, and her heart is with Lena Jones, the daughter she never had.

In a couple weeks, I'll have autographed Lena Jones books to offer as prizes on my blog. Watch for the chance to win two of these dramatic books.

About Andrea's Closet
Andrea's Closet is named for Andrea Brunk, who was 8 years old when she was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in July 2000. Like many children dealing with such a disease, Andrea dreaded her regular visits to the hospital.

Through chemotherapy and radiation treatments, the child-life specialist at Phoenix's St. Joseph's Hospital tried to keep up Andrea's spirits. They presented her with a Beanie Baby or some other prize from their stash every time she had to endure a painful or scary procedure.

Soon Andrea discovered the closet where the goodies were kept... Read more at the site.

At 5:44 p.m. today (4/6), several police units responded to reports of a shooting in the alley north of McLellan Road, between 54th Drive and 55th Avenue. Upon arrival, officers found the victim lying in the alley suffering from a gunshot wound. Witness statements and evidence at the scene indicated multiple shots had been fired. Downtown Glendale Restaurant
ROBBED!

Glendale Daily Planet --  Today shortly before noon, Bitzee Mama's, a famous downtown Glendale restaurant  located at   7023 N 58th Avenue across from Murphy Park was robbed.  $220 dollars were taken in this mid afternoon heist.

Patricia Ryan, the owner, tells us "The suspect was tall, thin, Caucasian, face with pock marks from past acne  and cleanly dressed in a long green shirt. Ryan continued:
"At approximately 11:40 he came in looking for a bottle of water and was at the counter next to the register.  When the register was opened he dropped the water and grabbed all the 20 dollar bills."  Whimsically she adds... "He even dropped his $2!"

Lulu and another restaurant employee chased down the ally after the  thief who joined another person that was driving a navy blue Mustang with a temporary paper plate.

Patricia Ryan told us, the officers that interviewed her after the robbery said this suspect was pulling these same stunts in Peoria... even with  the same blue Mustang with temporary plate.

This commonality of car description and MO was confirmed this afternoon with a conversation with Matt Barnett PIO for Glendale Police Department.

Officer Mat Barnett cautions: "If you spot  suspicious activity call Glendale Police at 623-930-3000 or call 911."  He continued: "If  an encounter with this person occurs  DO NOT put your self at risk,  comply with their demands, be a good witness and remember every detail, write down the details immediately and  call 911 ASAP.

The Gabrielle Liese Spirit Award  Presentation

The Gabrielle Liese Spirit Award was created in 2006 to honor those whose contributions to bead research in general or The Bead Museum in particular have made a significant impact on the growth of the institution.  The award was named after the Museum’s founder and Director Emeritus, Gabrielle Liese.  Liese was the first recipient of the award.  Last year the award was presented to Sindi Schloss, a gemologist from Scottsdale .  Sindi has been a significant member of the Museum Board of Directors since 1999 when the Museum moved to Glendale from Prescott .  Sindi has curated many exhibitions and serves as the Chair of the Exhibition, Education and Acquisitions Committee.  This year the award was presented to Cheryl Cobern-Browne, a local business woman who was instrumental in securing a home for The Bead Museum in Glendale .  Cheryl became the first Managing Director of the Museum after it moved to Glendale .  These three ladies are each responsible for building the foundation upon which the Museum is securely positioned.  They also continue to provide guidance and council as the Museum moves into its next phase of growth.

The Grove GMK5275 is the largest  "Rough Terrain Crane" that the company offers.  Truck mounted cranes for larger capacity and greater boom length are available but are unable to traverse rough terrain as this unit will do. GLENDALE CHAPTER LOCAL 493 FIREFIGHTERS TAKING A PRO-ACTIVE APPROACH TO
POOL SAFETY WITH FREE POOL FENCES

GLENDALE, Ariz. – With pool season once again in sight Glendale Firefighters, with the help of the Valley of the Sun United Way, spent Saturday morning going door to door in a Glendale neighborhood that has been impacted by drowning incidents over the past several years. Firefighters and volunteers qualified families with unfenced pools to receive a free pool fence. Several others will have their pool fences repaired. The fences and repairs will be done at no cost to families thanks to the generosity of Valley of the Sun United Way and Iron Man Fence Company.

Since 2000, 11 drowning incidents have been reported in the City of Glendale. Approximately half of those incidents occurred in the 85301 zip code. The 85301 neighborhood in which Saturday morning’s efforts were focused is from 61st to 65th Avenues and from Bethany Home Road to Missouri.

“Drowning incidents are absolutely preventable,” said John Holland, Glendale Fire Captain and Chapter Vice President of Local 493. “Drowning incidents impact everyone involved from family members to the firefighters who respond to these emergencies,” Holland continued. “We appreciate the Valley of the Sun United Way and Iron Man Fence Company for their help in bringing this valuable service to the community,” said Captain Holland.

In total, 30 families will either receive a new pool fence or have one repaired to meet certain standards. “It’s a good feeling to know that the chances of us responding to one of these homes for a drowning incident were decreased today,” said Glendale Firefighter and event co-chair Mark Herrmann.

More water safety information can be found on the Glendale Fire Department website www.glendaleaz.com/fire

Blue-tooth technology for heart-attack victims adopted by Glendale Fire Department EMS Teams.

Ed Sharpe Glendale, Ariz. – February 21, 2008
All photos © Ed Sharpe unless otherwise noted.

...a new high-tech tool giving Glendale firefighters the
weapon against one of their greatest enemies:
time.

...door to Balloon time ... slashed!

Imagine... you're a   45 year-old patient is in an ambulance and on his way to the emergency department (ED). You are short of breath, complaining of chest pains and have a family history of heart disease. Paramedics initiate an 12 lead EKG…and then what?

If you are lucky enough in an ambulance with Glendale Fire Department paramedics, your your 12 lead EKG will be immediately faxed from the ambulance to Banner Thunderbird Medical Center, thanks to new MRX heart monitor software a special Verizon cell phone and Blue Tooth technology where a fax line is installed from the ambulance to the ED Department. An ED nurse will receive your 12 lead EKG from the ambulance to start a “chest pain rapid response” and the cardiac response team will be initiated—before you even arrive at the ED.

wpe42.jpg (15181 bytes)“Receiving information on potential cardiac patients before they even enter the ED has the potential of greatly reducing door-to-balloon times—the interval between the time a patient arrives in the emergency department and the first inflation of an angioplasty balloon in the occluded coronary artery,” explains Dr. Marc Kates. “It’s been proven that the fastest median door-to-balloon times were achieved by hospitals with paramedics who are able to perform 12 lead EKGs in the field . In 2007 alone 1,272 " twelve lead" EKG's had been obtained by Glendale Fire paramedics .” This partnership between the hospital and community enables patients to receive care quicker and more efficiently while saving heart muscle during a heart attack.

EKG in the field – Glendale Fire, Banner Thunderbird, and Banner Estrella have partnered to implement Blue Tooth technology in which a fax line allows an EKG to be faxed from the ambulance in the field to the emergency department. An emergency nurse receives the EKG and can start “chest pain rapid response” and initiate the cardiac response team – before the patient arrives at the hospital. For a patient experiencing a heart attack, every second counts. This technology will save lives.

Nine trucks have the capability to send EKGs via fax from the field.

A complete EKG is printed out on a fax machine, allowing doctors to diagnose the information and offer an immediate course of treatment to paramedics or emergency medical technicians in the field with the patient.

But what if the patient isn’t being
transported to Banner Thunderbird
Medical Center’s Emergency Department?

Even if a patient is being taken to another hospital in the West Valley, once Banner Thunderbird Medical Center’s ED receives the faxed EKG, it will be forwarded to the hospital where the patient will be treated.

“It’s a win-win situation for the entire West Valley,” says Laurie Wood, RN, pre-hospital coordinator for Banner Thunderbird Medical Center. “Our partnership with the Glendale Fire Department paramedics as they use their Philip's MRX monitor will benefit the entire health care network in our community, but more importantly, the patients we both care for.”

Chief Montgomery elaborates on some key points and improvements

"The Glendale Fire Department is believed to be the first Valley agency to employ the device"

"It has been using the device for about six months, replacing old technology in which EKG information was relayed to emergency rooms via radio transmission."

"Transmissions using the old  system were not of diagnostic quality, so physicians weren't able to make definitive medical decisions"

(Click photo for larger view)

"The 12 lead MRX heart monitor allows the Glendale Paramedics to view the patients heart in variety of conditions that may cause muscle damage due to blood vessel blockage around the heart. As the Fire Department Paramedic assesses this and determines the level of emergency they then transmits the 12 lead EKG sample to the receiving hospital via cell phone. This allows the hospital to prepare to provide a surgical intervention that may re-establish blood flow once again to that area of the heart. This is all in the hopes of lessening the effects of the heart attack that the person has just experienced."

SECOND DEBUT BACK SELLING ANTIQUES IN CATLIN COURT!

We started Second Debut in 1987 after I retired for Trans World Airlines. We retired from Second Debut in 2001 and have had a wonderful busy retirement traveling, enjoying our grandchildren and doing many other things. During this period of retirement I contacted both prostate and lung cancer and am now a survivor of both.  Inez and I give much of our time helping others with cancer, particularly prostate cancer.

Decided to go back in the antique and collectible business as we both missed the fun of buying and selling antiques and the fun of meeting and talking our customers.  We try to run our store like an old Country Store where you can come in, sit down and we talk about any subject, including politics.  We will be again selling antiques, collectibles, a little of this and a little of that, so come by and we can at least chat.

Am 77 years old, but am not willing to sit down and wait for the call from above.  We both plan on an exciting future, as we fully realize that you only have one day at a time and should enjoy each day as if it is your last.

Welcome back Max and Inez!

ONE LUCKY MAN TAKES HOME

300 POUNDS OF CHOCOLATE

GLENDALE , Ariz. – Charlie may have gotten the chocolate factory, but a local high school teacher took home the sweetest prize from this year’s Glendale Chocolate Affaire. The world’s largest chocolate football was raffled at the annual Glendale event to support the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Commission (MYAC), a community service organization coordinated by Mayor Elaine Scruggs.

Cerreta’s Candy Company created the 300-pound, six-foot-by-nine-foot chocolate football to honor the two Super Bowl teams, the New York Giants and New England Patriots.

The lucky winner, Ryan Taylor, a PE teacher and track coach at Independence High School , had a choice between a gift certificate from Cerreta’s or 300 pounds of chocolate. Coach Taylor opted to take home the chocolate, which was packaged up in 30 10-pound chocolate bars.

The world’s largest football will remain on display at Cerreta’s. During the week leading up to the Glendale Chocolate Affaire, MYAC students sold raffle tickets, raising more than $1,200.

The Mayor’s Youth Advisory Commission is a working group of Glendale teens from all high schools in our city, as well as public and private schools outside the city. Each year, the teens plan community projects, a Teen Town Hall and Student Government Day.

But what is to happen to the 300 lb football?

Sent to city <2/13/2008 11:36:19 A.M. US Mountain Standard Time>

YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST!     We as a city need display  commemorating our first Super Bowl and  this  should be in it... Contact Cerreta's lets find a place and I have taken the liberty to send this to my fellow archivists here and abroad to see how the heck to preserve it.

----Ed Sharpe GDP/KKAT-IPTV but also an archivist...

Reports are coming in... it has been suggested...

"OK, I see a giant conclave of Archivists called together to deal with this unique problem.  We close the door to the room so we can meet in peace ..... When we finally open the door, I guarantee you the problem will be resolved -- and no more football.

 Chocolate? WHAT Chocolate?"

Is it milk chocolate or dark chocolate? For dark, I'll travel to the conclave.

Eat it. People who want to create things for long term life don't
use chocolate. You could always make a 300lb plaster cast of it.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I have chocolate on my
waistline that has been there for 25 years. If we split the football
among us, I can guarantee that the part that I eat will be preserved
for the rest of my life!

Take a picture, then send pieces to fellow archivists...  ;-)

Grand idea.

Incidentally, this issue has sparked lively discussion in my office about the nature and definition of "document".  I would say that the chocolate football is a document on a variety of levels, though not meant to last; ephemeral.  Yes?

Hi, Ed,

I get similar questions on a somewhat regular basis. The football's enemies will be heat, dampness, mold, and insects. Oh, and small children (and large children and any other chocoholics). You need to keep it in a cool place so it won't melt, and also have it in some sort of container to keep out mold and insects. A display case in an air conditioned museum would work, with someone checking it occasionally to make sure it isn't developing any mold.

However, as Sonny suggested, photographs might be the best way to preserve it.

(one of my most recent questions along these lines involved someone who had decorated a fancy birthday cake for a friend, and the friend thought it was so beautiful she wanted to keep it forever and ever......Talk about your mixed media!)

Christine

Don't laugh: this is an issue already faced by art conservators; take, for example, Janine Antoni's work "Lick and Lather," which consists of busts of the artist--executed in soap, and in chocolate.

http://www.artnet.com/artwork/424319970/683/lick--lather.html

Antoni is not alone in her use of chocolate:

http://blogs.usyd.edu.au/bizart/2006/09/the_art_of_chocolate.html

Beak it up and send it to the homeless for Valentine’s Day ….

Archive chocolate?  Are you crazy?  My motto is "Give me all your chocolate and nobody gets hurt!"

I'm not sure how you would deal with the size of the object, but you might check this article for help with the chocolate aspect.

Abstract: Contemporary artists' work in chocolate, and their reasons for using this medium, are summarized. The likely composition of chocolate is then described: cocoa butter, sugar, vegetable fats, and sometimes wax or milk. Some of these materials migrate easily through the chocolate, and can appear as a bloom on the surface; this indicates adverse changes to the physical properties of the bulk chocolate. Passive conservation is important: storage at 20-21°C and 40-50% relative humidity (RH) is recommended, rather than a lower temperature which requires more rigorous RH control. Insect attack is always a danger, and acceptable ways of treating infestations are discussed. Mechanical cleaning of chocolate surfaces is possible, and surface cleaning with water, ethanol, or a nonpolar solvent are possibilities, depending on the amount of bloom and the porosity of the surviving chocolate.
Some might suggest making a facsimile and eating the original. :-)

I hate to say it but being from Hershey they are more inclined to save the wrappers and packaging than they are the actual chocolate!!  If you’ve ever been to the museum it is less about chocolate and more about Hershey the man, Native Americans, and local culture.

Rhys Bowen at the Velma Teague Library

With her new book due out in a few weeks, award-winning author Rhys Bowen took the time to appear at the Velma Teague Library, as part of the Authors at the Teague series. She had an appreciative audience, eager to hear about her mysteries that have won Agatha and Anthony Awards.

Rhys said she normally starts a talk by saying that she kills people for a living.
Her Royal Spyness is the first book in her third mystery series.

She said she wrote for the BBC in London. She decided to write mysteries, but didn't know where to set them. She appreciates the settings in mysteries. She's a huge fan of Tony Hillerman and his settings. She said the first time she and her husband were in the Southwest, she didn't need a map, thanks to his books. She couldn't decide where to set her books until she was telling a friend about her childhood visits to family in Wales. They really had a mailman who read everyone's mail. There were two Methodist chapels across from each other. The ministers were nice to each other, but they had a billboard war. Constable Evan Evans then appeared, her first mystery character. The series is about a little village in Wales with a community policeman. However, Evans is a little too polite for Rhys. Sometimes he annoyed her. She wanted to write about someone who didn't shut up and stood up for herself.

Rhys' visit to Ellis Island was the start of her second series. Immigrants coming in at Ellis Island either experienced great joy or great despair. There was a great feeling of despair there. There was a great deal of corruption at Ellis Island. She said she realized Ellis Island was the scene for the ultimate locked room mystery. Rhys Bowen's Molly Murphy mysteries are about an Irish immigrant who fled from Ireland after she killed a man who tried to rape her. Molly knew that there would be no justice, since she had killed the landowner's son. She took a false name, and fled. While at Ellis Island, someone was killed, and the identity Molly took was on the list of suspects. Molly became a detective.

Rhys said that New York City was not the melting pot everyone thinks it was. In fact, it was broken into the Sicilian section, the Irish section, etc. It wasn't until the next generation went to school together that New York started to become a melting pot. Her new book, Tell Me, Pretty Maiden, is due out
in March. Molly's detective agency has become successful. She has too many cases, and wants her ex-cop boyfriend, Daniel, to join her. One winter night, they walk in Central Park, and find the body of a young woman. While Molly waits with the body, the woman regains consciousness.. She survives, but she's lost the power of speech and no one knows who she is. In each Molly book, Rhys can dig into some of New York's story. This book is about New York theater and the lives of the chorus girls.

Rhy's agent at St. Martin's told her that she needed a standalone to break her out as a bestseller. Rhys didn't want to do dark thrillers with serial killers, the type of books that make the listss. She didn't want to live with those characters for six months. Instead, she suggested Her Royal Spyness, and other people loved it as much as her agent did. Recently, on DorothyL, a listserv for mystery readers, there were 1700 books submitted as the ones people enjoyed most in 2007. Her Royal Spyness was the third most popular on the list with readers. It has also been nominated for a Dilys Award for the mystery booksellers most enjoyed selling in 2007.

Georgie, the heroine in Her Royal Spyness, is thirty-fourth in line to the British throne. She's a minor member of the Windsor family, living in poverty, with no way to make a living. She's expected to marry some member of a European royal family. Queen Mary is the character that asks Georgie to be a spy for her. Rhys said she met Queen Mary when she was quite elderly. She was still a formidable woman, with a rigid posture. In this book, Queen Mary wants Georgie to spy on her son, David.

Churchill once said that they should erect a statue to Mrs. Simpson because if David had become king, he would have invited Hitler into England.

Rhys said Queen Mary collected antiques, and was known to comment when she visited people, so they were obliged to present her with the antique she had admired. Rhys was born in Bath, and there were a number of antique stores there. Queen Mary had been known to raid antique stores, so the owners hid their better items if they knew she was coming.

She said that Her Royal Spyness was her most autobiographical book. There's a scene with Georgie going to tea with the Queen, when Georgie was living on very little food. It was a gorgeous spread, however, guests could only eat what the Queen ate. Rhys said she once went to tea with Queen Elizabeth II, who was always watching her figure. Since she only had one piece of brown bread, that was all her guests had. She said she's often thought that Elizabeth didn't know about that because she was a very kind woman, who would have wanted her guests to enjoy the food.

Rhys said, like Georgie, she had a brief and disastrous career as a model, and Georgie's scene is from Rhys' experience.

She said she married into an upper-class family, and there were lots of servants at the houses they visited. She said there is still very much a class system in England. Rhys went to a sherry party in the Cotswolds, and the talk of the party was that a grocer bought the house across the way. Upper-class families feel they are there by the grace of God, and everyone else is there to serve them. Among aristocracy, you are one of us or not one of us. That's still the way it is.

The second book in the Royal Spyness series is due out in July, and it's called A Royal Pain. The Queen is still trying to get her son away from Mrs. Simpson, so she invites an eighteen-year-old Bavarian princess to visit. She then tells Georgie that the princess will stay with her. The problem? Gerogie is living by herself in her family's London house without any servants. How can she explain that when the princess arrives with her retinue?

The setting is the 30s, a time of turmoil in Europe. Germany had strong Communists as well as the Nazis, fighting to take over the vacuum in Germany's government. There were Communist marches in England. Then there was Oswald Mosley, a fascist leader with a group of Black Shirts who skirmished with the Communists in London.

When asked about using real people in her books, Rhys said she uses suitably dead people, but she does try to be true to who the people were. In one Molly book, Mark Twain supported women's suffrage. She thought that was appropriate because he had made a speech about it, in the same time period as the Molly book. She said the Royal Family is fair game to use in books.

Rhys was asked about her books being published in England, and she said cozier mysteries are virtually dead in England. They publish dark, psychological mysteries such as those by Val McDermid and Minette Walters. She said she hasn't sold Her Royal Spyness in England.

She said she's a glutton for punishment, and wrote ten books in the Evan series. She didn't chose to end it, but the backlist went out of print, so she saw no reason to continue. Tell Me, Pretty Maiden is the seventh in the Molly series, and she's signed for two more. She's glad she moved on. The only problem with a series is you're tied to the same set of characters. She has a whole new scope of crime in her new series, with interesting crimes.

Rhys said her problem is she has too many ideas. She tells people if they have writer's block, then you're trying to make your characters do something they don't want to do. Her characters go in different directions than she expects. For instance, her next Molly book will be called In a Gilded Cage. In that one, she had no idea what would happen. Molly was participating in a march, but Rhys had no idea that a woman would be dragged out of the march, and a fight would ensue.

She said she can't outline because she likes to be surprised. She wants her sleuths to be believable. Her sleuths don't know where they're going, just as she doesn't know where they're going.

Rhys writes two books a year. She writes every day. She starts the day with her email, and then works. She writes five pages a day in her first draft. She gives first drafts to certain people, and then she polishes them.

She's polished up Tell Me, Pretty Maiden, and that next Molly book will be released March 4. I'm grateful she took time to talk to the audience at the Velma Teague Library before she goes on tour for her new mystery.

Glendale Balloon Glow  01/19/2008
Saturday Night A Great Experience!

A Visit With Michael Glen Balloon Pilot

Photos and  story by: Ed Sharpe (small photos get larger when clicked)

This Glendale Balloon Glow event was special  with the addition of a handicapped pilot, Michael Glen, owner and pilot of “Elevation II” out of Tucson, Arizona.

wpeAC.jpg (48765 bytes) Glen tells us, “I guess you could say I was born into ballooning"

"My dad, Bill Glen, started in 1973, and I was born in 1975. I had my first balloon ride at two weeks old – so I am told."

"As a child, my parents let me play with the controls and instruments, and as a teenager, I got my student pilot license, with the intention of completing my pilot’s license. But being a teenager, I tended to sleep instead of get up early to fly."

"In 1996, I had an accident which left my legs paralyzed. I finally got my pilot’s license – because I wanted to achieve my goal, not because I would be the only paraplegic hot air balloon pilot in the world."

"I fly a balloon called a ‘Duo-Chariot'. I call it a ‘love seat in the air.’ It is a two-seater bench with a harness or lap belt–depending on how much you want to be strapped in. There is no basket around you. You do have a solid foot rest, unlike the ‘Cloudhopper’ balloon which is a seat in the air with your legs dangling. I sure didn’t want to use that."

Glenn lists his "real Job" as a motivational speaker and is willing to travel anywhere to get the
message out.  (Schools and organizations interesting  in having him speak  can find details on his website www.rollingpilot.com/ )

wpe3F.jpg (20468 bytes) He tells us:  "It is important to me to speak to kids and young adults."

"I go around to schools and give demonstrations to show them that if I, a paraplegic, can pilot a hot air balloon, then anything they want to do is possible." He added.

Glenn describes the joy of it all:

"The greatest joy I get from flying is the freedom...

"There is nothing like waking up in the morning and flying or even crewing."

"There are three balloon pilots and three balloons in my family – my father, my brother, and myself. So there is always the opportunity to either fly or crew – and both are equally fun. "

"Flying for me is like sitting on a platform in the sky and watching the world below you".

The Case of the Stolen  Balloon...

Glen said someone disconnected his trailer from his truck sometime between midnight and 6 a.m. In it was his balloon.

The balloon Elevation is blue, yellow and green and has a special metal basket to accommodate Glen.

The balloon was in a blue-green trailer with Arizona license plate 94896 with balloon stickers on the back.

City of Glendale - Unity Day- Jan.18. 2008

Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Day Luncheon took place at the Glendale  Civic Center Jan.18. 2008

We celebrated the life and ideals of Martin Luther King Jr. with a special luncheon on Jan. 18 at the Glendale Civic Center.

This year’s keynote speaker was poet, author and professor Nikki Giovanni who came of age during the Civil Rights Movement. Over the past 25 years, Nikki Giovanni's outspokenness, in her writing and in person, has brought the eyes of the world upon her. One of our most widely read American poets, she prides herself on being "A black American, a daughter, a mother, a professor of English."

Giovanni,   has written nearly 20 books, and has established herself as an outspoken advocate for equality in America.

Nikki Giovanni is  also well-known for her moving poem We Are Virginia Tech, which she recited after last spring's Virginia Tech massacre .

The luncheon was hosted by the city’s Diversity Committee, which strives to promote an environment that places a high value on individuality, dignity, respect and professional growth.  The committee presented the Promoting Inclusiveness award, to acknowledge the recipient’s contribution to promoting inclusiveness within our community.

As one of the state’s premier celebrations of Dr. King’s life and the ideals his name so symbolically represents, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity Day Luncheon demonstrates Glendale’s commitment to create a society that is more just, peaceful and understanding.

Glendale Police  Donate 60 Teddy Bears
to Thunderbird Hospital Pediatric Unit

 By Ed Sharpe -

(Glendale Daily Planet Thursday - December 20, 2007)   Glendale Police Department today delivered 60 donated teddy bears to Banner - Thunderbird Hospital pediatric ward.

Chuck Eberspacher   is a crime prevention specialist  and a part of a
Community Action Team  which
consists of 1 civilian and 1 officer

The Arrowhead Country Club Ladies Golf League gathered  teddy bears at their events and kindly donated 60 teddy bears to the Glendale Police Department. There was every shape, size, color and brand of teddy imaginable in this delightful collection of creatures.

Chuck Eberspacher  from Glendale Police Department with hands full of bears!

Chuck Eberspacher, Lt. Katrina Alberty   and officer Andy Lynes  from Glendale Police Department, accompanied by  Bo Larsen  and  Aimee Dobson  Banner Public relations department,  Kim Walter director of pediatrics and  a group of journalists toured up and down the hallways of the pediatric ward distributing the furry creatures.

Officer Andy Lynes  from Glendale Police Department helps a young patient select a bear.

The children were delighted as they were able to choose a favorite teddy from a large box taken around the ward from room to room. This became a drawn out process since there were so many styles of bears to choose from. Many of the children wanted to dig all the way to the bottom of the large box that was transported around.

The children were of all ages. In the case of infants, mothers were making the choices of which bear was the best!

In the  final process of acceptance of  each bear  by the child  Chuck Eberspacher not only deputized the bear and gave it a  metallic stick-on police badge but each child was deputized as well!

Utopia Road Recorder Consort Annual Holiday Concert
At The Velma Teague Library Downtown Glendale

Photos and story Ed Sharpe Glendale Daily Planet

Once again it was  time for the Utopia Road Recorder Consort annual holiday concert at the Velma Teague Branch of the Glendale Public Library on Thursday night  12-13-2007.

It was wonderful to walk  in after  walking  in the crisp evening air and enjoying beautiful lights in the park and have the sweet sounds of Renaissance  styled  Christmas music reach your ears...

Linda Rising Husband  Karl Rehmer Perform with Bass Recorders

Recorders have been popular instruments since the 10th century in Europe. By 1750, recorders were replaced in orchestras by more powerful transverse flutes. Recorders have seen a surge in popularity since the early 1900s because they are relatively easy to play.

Director Linda Rising says that: "The group is made up of Renaissance wannabes who gather to play and sing just for fun and perform a few times each year. They will play a variety of music from medieval to contemporary, played on replica instruments from the 15th and 16th centuries."

Group director Linda Rising tells how  they got started... "Utopia Road Recorder Consort has been playing together for over 10 years. We started as a group of people who worked at what was at the time, AG Communication Systems, on Utopia Road. We are all connected to software development and music is just for fun. We all have some background in music: Karen was a flute player, Anne had piano and sings in her church choir, Karl played the trumpet, and Rick the guitar. "

She explains her personal background: "I've been playing recorder the longest and I was the one who infected the rest of the group!  I've had piano and voice and two years of music theory -- thinking at one time I would get a degree in music, but ending up with a Ph.D. in computer science instead."

This dynamic group turns up all over the  valley and has played at  Bookmans, Borders, churches, libraries, and schools. A program targeting young people in grade schools to get them interested in music is called called "Recorders Through the Ages" .

Linda explains the advantages of starting out on a recorder: "The recorder is a great instrument to play for fun, because you can become pretty good without the intensive work of other "real" instruments. The recorder is the Renaissance and early Baroque precursor of the flute. It is softer (even the smaller instruments) and easy to play. Good plastic instruments are available so it is a good way for school children to learn about music."

Patrol officers responded to the listed address in reference to a suspicious person call that came in at 16:10.  Information was received that the subject matched the description of a subject that had been involved in a purse snatch, stolen vehicle, and residential burglary on 5/16/2007.  The suspect  Joseph Morales 2/4/75  fled the area prior to police arrival but several calls reported that the subject was seen running eastbound through the neighborhoods in the area of 5800 W. Myrtle.  A perimeter was established and K9 responded to assist with a track.  The subject was seen running northbound out of the perimeter into Landmark School property.  The subject was again surrounded and was seen climbing onto the rooftop of the school.  Officers were able to contain the subject to top of a metal awning in the center of the school area near Building D.  Numerous commands were given to the subject to voluntarily come down but he refused and again attempted to climb on to the rooftop of an adjacent building.  Officers were able to get on top on the awning, and after a short struggle the subject was taken into custody without further incident. The subject was found to have numerous outstanding felony charges, Glendale misdemeanor warrants, and parole violations. The subject was booked on twelve additional charges as a result of his actions on this date.

We were joined by Gannon Hubler Chief Photojournalist for KPHO TV and Matt Barnett PIO for the Glendale Police Department who filled us in on the details.
