The Adventure of...
Mayor Elaine Scruggs
State of the City Address
2/01/05

To find when they will replay the address  check the
KGLN Cable Schedule.

This morning I had the pleasure of  having Breakfast at Aunt Pitty Pat's Kitchen with Hollister (Hop) David, Arizona artist and  publisher of the Ajo Copper News. Had a fantastic Breakfast (everything is great on the menu!) discussed Hop's upcoming art show being held at Tera's Garden which is located at 606 N. 4th Avenue in Phoenix, AZ.
He invites everyone to come and visit him  at the opening on the evening of Friday, February 4.

We wandered over by the Glendale Civic Center to watch KGLN setup to Video the Mayor's address.

You may have been there, you will see it on the news tonight and it will be re-run but while  it was being filmed by KGLN Here is some background on the production and engineering behind recording and televising it!

There were producers, camera crew, engineers and operations people all working in harmony to  record this  photonic symphony.

In back of the Civic Center was the  Production Truck

Between the camera crew inside the civic center and  the many people seated in this truck and entire video production was made.

In addition it is transmitted back using an antenna that was on top of the civic center linking  the truck and crew to the main studio in the Sub-basement 2 at city hall.

This truck is a fascinating piece of equipment to learn more about it, what it contains, where everyone sits and how it is used  click here.

Plate It Up has holiday season interrupted by road work...

Ed Sharpe Cub Reporter 12/28/04

Much to the chagrin of Heather Burton, Owner of PLATE IT UP, a store selling culinary tools and offering classes in the art of preparing fine cuisine, a collapsed main sewer line in front of her store brought about a massive amount of roadwork during this holiday season.

In the Glendale Daily Planet’s conversation with Demo Jaquez , an employee with the City of Glendale, he related that the sewer line had collapsed in one spot. He continued that further investigation of the sewer line with the city's sewer crawling video camera, more evidence was presented indicating a need to replace the rest of the line between Myrtle and Palmaire in the alley running parallel with 57 drive and 57 Ave.

This length of sewer was slated for replacement in 6 month to a year in the future but due to the work that needed to be done to replace the damaged run and the deteriorating nature of the rest of the line, replacement was deemed necessary.

This event started 12/22/04 and will be completed sometime after the first of the year.

Heather countered the ill effects of this construction by placing extra signage in front of her store. Other friendly neighborhood retailers joined in by allowing her to place signs on their properties also.

"They were willing to relocate the project management trailer that was in front of the store" Heather remarked.  She
continued that the city has been responsive to the best of their ability considering the situation.

Historic Downtown Glendale played host to a multitude of street performers and fantasy characters when the city kicked off That Thursday Thing, with a brand new street fair festival called Cirque du Glendale in downtown Glendale from 5-10 p.m. on Oct. 20 and 21.

That Thursday Thing will take place on the third Thursday of every month, from October through May in newly-renovated Murphy Park. The area’s antique stores, specialty shops and boutiques will be open late these evenings. Each month, the event will have a different theme that will give shoppers and fun-seekers an extra reason to head to downtown Glendale.

The kick-off event, Cirque du Glendale,  featured street performers, also known as “buskers,” of every imaginable sort entertaining throughout the downtown area. Guests were enchanted and entertained by comedians, magicians, stilt walkers, barbershop quartets, unicyclists, accordionists, face painters, clowns, chalk artists, henna artists, caricature artists, psychics, hypnotists and many more. Visitors encountered characters they remembered from fantasy, fairy tale and legend, such as Spiderman, Superman, Peter Pan, Tinkerbell, The Easter Bunny and Santa Claus, putting in an early appearance.

Guests  even tried their hand at being a “busker,” with the Stilt Walking Workshop, located in Murphy Park. A professional stilt walker gave free lessons to all those wishing they had run away and joined the circus. Children  participated, too, as miniature stilts will be just their size.

The entertainment was complete with awesome music.  Several stellar bands performed, rounding out the most exciting entertainment lineup in the Valley.

Other bands performing in various locations throughout Old Towne Glendale and Historic Catlin Court are: Crossfire, The Dyno Glides, Blue Fur and Stan Devereaux.

Glendale Arizona - Ed Sharpe - Glendale Daily Planet - 9/17/2005

In the true, hometown festival fashion, Murphy Park, located at 58th and Glendale avenues, hosted Fiesta Glendale. The park was abuzz with music, dance and traditional food. Two stages of entertainment, including the Valley’s hottest Latin jazz and rock bands, traditional music and dance performances delighted the crowds that attended.

A special treat was the appearance of the  the Mexican consulate. Cónsul General Carlos Flores Vizcarra who re-enacted the  cry for independence in the  flag ceremony. Mexican Independence Day holds the same meaning as the 4th of July does: both  events are the celebration of the overthrow of occupation by a foreign power over residents of a remotely ruled nation...  In addition the Consulate was presented a plaque from Governor Janet Napolitano's office of Arizona.

The food was wonderful, the music fantastic, but to truly learn the meaning of Mexican Independence Day please read many of the articles presented in the links below. It is a rich history.

Shortly before dawn on September 16, 1810, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla made a monumentous decision that revolutionized the course of Mexican history.

The City of Glendale Summer Band presents ...

A Concert

Honoring the memory of

E. Lowell Rogers

1929 - 2004

Founder and Conductor of the
City of Glendale Summer Band for 22 Years

Tuesday Evening, June 9, 1005
Glendale Amphitheater

Glendale Arizona

8 o'clock

Program narrated by Jon Brictson, KGLN, Channel 11, Glendale

About E. Lowell Rogers

E. Lowell Rogers, a prominent Arizona music educator passed away on August 23, 2004 at the age of 75. He was a percussionist, teacher, conductor, composer, author and leading figure in children's music education.

He was born in Dayton, Ohio and attended Madison Township Schools in Trotwood, Ohio where he graduated from high school in the class of 1947. He received a BS in Education degree from Bowling Green State university in 1951 and went on to be granted a Masters Degree in Music Education by the University of Arizona. He taught music in Ohio and Colorado before coming to Glendale in 1956. He was a music educator in the Glendale Elementary School District for over thirty years, first as a teacher then as the district music supervisor.

The number of bands he played in, concerts he conducted, plays he directed, ceremonies he hosted, awards he received, stories and jokes he told, began in his childhood and grew throughout his life. He authored two music education textbooks "Are You Open of Saturday or Sunday: and "It's In The Box," which as used as the method for teaching elementary music in Glendale.

Lowell was named "Arizona Music Educator of the Year" in 1983. He was listed as "An Outstanding Music Educator in America." We was named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Glendale Arts Commission and was past-president of the Glendale Rotary Club. He was a career member of Music Educators National Conference, Arizona Music Educators Association and the Arizona Band and Orchestra Directors Association.

One of the most lasting legacies he left to Glendale was the founding of the City of Glendale Summer Band in 1967. This was done in partnership with Lee Stanley, who was at that time the city's Director of the Department of Parks and Recreation. The band continues to operate today and was conducted by Lowell for 22 years. The amphitheater which is the the central focus of the present Glendale City Hall exterior was built as a performance venue for this band. His spirit, love of music and humor made an indelible impact on the many persons with whom he came into contact.

Lowell is survived by his wife of 42 years, Stella, his children Curtis and Pamela, his brother Lee and two grandchildren Jordan and Taylor.

Lowell Rogers, Bob Sexton and our amphitheater

The City of Glendale Summer Band played a significant role in the construction of the Glendale Amphitheater at City Hall.

In the early years, under the direction of E. Lowell Rogers, the band first played in a portable "stage mobile," then on a shuffle board court, and then a basketball court at O'Neill Park.

When the City of Glendale decided to construct a new municipal complex, the architectural firm of Sexton and Varney was commissioned to do the job. There were to be two major structures, an office building and the City Council building. While designing the complex, architect Bob Sexton was faced with a dilemma;. how to tie the two buildings together in a pleasing and functional way?

Sexton had been a tenor saxophone player in the City of Glendale Summer Band for a number of years. He had first-hand knowledge about the need for a "real" place for the band to perform. He came up with an idea that would "kill two birds with one stone," connecting the two parts of the complex with an amphitheater. After consulting with band director Lowell Rogers, the size of the stage was predicated on the size of the band. The rest is history.

Unfortunately, Bob passed away shortly before the project was completed. Although he didn't live to see his dream completed, or have the pleasure of performing in the venue, he, along with Lowell, left the legacy that has been so useful for so many since then and will be in years to come.

a walk though history....

Remember it was the The Abraham Zapruder 8mm film that showed Kennedy getting shot. This was one of the most shocking documented events in history...... it was NOT on 35 mm or even 16 mm... it was on a 8mm Bell and Howell home movie camera the 60's equiv. of a camera phone, a palmcorder or PDA!

Although we enjoy our large cameras we must remember that it is not always the tools we use, or the training we have... some times it is being in the right place at the right time.
