FOP
Lodge 12 honored our fallen heroes and show gratitude to those
who continue to protect and serve.
Wednesday
May 16th 2007 from 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
Summary:
A memorial ceremony
was held at the new Glendale Media Center
located
at 6633 North 95th Avenue. To honor our fallen brother
Anthony J Holly, memorial lapel pins were distributed,
compliments of FOP Lodge 12
Glendale police officers and officers
form neighboring city's and departments gathered along with
Glendale city officials and citizens on Wednesday, May 16, 2007,
to honor fallen Glendale Police Officer Anthony Holly and
other neighboring city's officers.
The ceremony, which was held at the new
Glendale Media and Conference Center located
at 6633 North 95th Avenue across from the new University
of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale.
This was the sixth annual Glendale
Peace Officer Memorial Ceremony. Previously
to this, the ceremony had been held in Glendale City Council Chambers.
This local event
coincides with National Peace Officer Memorial Day, which is May
15th.
FOP Lodge 12 is the Glendale affiliate of the Fraternal Order of
Police. They do not represent the Department, but members
of the Glendale Police Department and serve as half of the
Glendale Police Officer's Coalition along with the Glendale Law
Enforcement Association. The FOP has historically
presented this
event as part of their fraternal efforts. The department has
been very supportive and assisted in sponsoring of the
event also.
The
President of the FOP for Glendale PD is Detective Rob Hawkins
spoke today -
The
Ceremony

The Glendale ceremony began with a procession by the
Glendale Police Pipes and Drums squad assisted by the
Border Patrol Pipes and Drums, followed by the posting of
colors by the Glendale Police Department Honor Guard with
Border Patrol assistance. Det. Roger Geisler sang the
National Anthem before a moving invocation by Chaplain
Darlene Danninger.

With great emotion Chief Steven Conrad, Glendale Police
Department addressed the group...
"Over the years, I have
had the opportunity to participate in many police
memorial ceremonies," said Glendale Police Chief
Steve Conrad, as he addressed those in attendance.
"...But I have never felt the true sense of loss
that I feel today."
Chief Conrad continued....
"The loss of Officer
Holly affects us all today...no family should have to
bear the loss of a loved one, and no department should
have to bear the loss of their own,"
Officer Holly lost his life on February 19th, 2007 after
he was shot during a traffic stop. In honor of Officer
Holly and other Arizona officers being remembered at the
ceremony, Glendale Mayor Elaine Scruggs made a special
proclamation declaring May 16, 2007, Glendale Police
Officer Memorial Day. See proclamation below.
 Members
of the Military Order of the Purple Heart also made a
special presentation to Anthony Holly's family in
remembrance of the fallen officer.

Order of the Purple Heart Commander Felix Delgado
presented the Holly Family with a Purple Heart Plaque.
"He
(Officer Holly) lived a life of service to others,"
Commander Felix Delgado said during the Purple Heart
plaque presentation. "He went in harm's way so
others could enjoy their life in safety."
Along with Glendale's Officer
Holly the following officers were honored.
Senior Patrol Agent Nicholas Grenning - US Border Patrol
Officer Robert Targosz - Gilbert Police Department
Officer Kevin Weeks - Tempe Police Department
Senior Patrol Agent David Webb - US Border Patrol
Officer Anthony Holly - Glendale Police Department
Deputy Pilip Rodriguez - Mohave County Sheriff's Office

Glendale
Police Chief Steve Conrad commented:
Over
the years, I have had many opportunities to attend and
participate in police memorial ceremonies. I was always
reverent, always solemn and always a little sad, but I never
felt the true sense of loss that we all feel this year. As
I have said in the past, the events of February 19, 2007 have
changed our lives forever. The loss of Tony Holly has
profoundly affected all of us.
Each
year, we gather together to remember and honor those who have
made the ultimate sacrifice for our safety. Unfortunately
this year we learned firsthand what pain and suffering can come
from the violence that is unfortunately part of our society.
Today
along with Tony Holly, we honor the sacrifices of:
Senior
Patrol Agent Nicholas Greenig of the
US
Border Patrol
Deputy
Philip Rodriguez of the
Mohave
County
Sheriff's Office
Officer
Rob Targosz of the Gilbert Police Department
Senior
Patrol Agent David Webb of the
US
Border Patrol
Officer
Kevin Weeks of the Tempe Police Department
So
far this year, in our country 66 law enforcement officers have
lost their lives in the line of duty. Last year, there
were 146 deaths. This is totally unacceptable. No
family should have to bear the news that they have lost a loved
one. No department should have to bear the loss of one of their
own. It is hard to understand why there is so much pain in
the world today.
I
don't know why Tony Holly and these other men had to die.
There are no easy answers but I do take some comfort in knowing
they were fighting for right against wrong, for law against the
lawless and for hope against fear. Their lives served a
noble and worthy cause.
In
terms of our department, we will never forget Tony or his
sacrifice. As we are joined together in deep thought and
reflection, we need to know that Tony is with us now. He
will always be a part of us.
Winston
Churchill once said, "We make a living by what we get.
We make a life by what we give". Tony gave his all
for his family, for our community and for us. For that, we
are eternally grateful.

Greetings,
Comfort and Tears...

"Police
Week"
The time has now come,
for this one week a year
When we all stop to
think... when we all shed
a tear
For all of the Heroes,
whose names grace the wall
And for all of those
Heroes, who still answer the call
Family and friends at
the wall they will stand
With pictures,
letters, and love in their hands
Left at the wall will
be displays of their love
A tribute to those who
now watch from above
They will think of the
day their world was destroyed
A split second in
time... causing such a great
void
As they visit the
wall, there is great pain in their heart
But strangely it 's
there... that the healing can start
As they stand there in
awe of this memorial stone
It is then that they
realize that they are not alone
So many others with
stories quite the same
So many more sharing
each other's pain
Let us all stop and
think what this week 's all about
It 's for those who
sacrifice for us. .. day in and day out
And for each name
engraved by the stone cutter
's knife
There are hundreds of
people. .. touched by that life
Although it 's just a
week, seven days from the year
It 's a lifetime of
anxiety, emotions and fear
For most that will
ease when the ceremony ends
But this week, lasts
forever. . . for family and friends

Environmental Benefits
of Pervious Concrete
|
By eliminating the need for retention ponds, swales, and
other stormwater devices, pervious concrete can lower
overall project costs on a first-cost basis, and makes more
efficient use of the land Use of pervious concrete is among
the Best Management Practices (BMP) recommended by the EPA
and other agencies for the management of stormwater runoff
on a regional and local basis.
Pervious
concrete can provide a project with a high number of points
toward certification under the U.S. Green Building
Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®)
Green Building Rating System.
Pervious pavement integrates
hardscape surfaces with stormwater management. It is made by
carefully controlling the amounts of water and cementitious
materials used to create a paste that forms a thick coating
around aggregate particles. Unlike conventional concrete,
the mixture contains little or no sand, creating a
substantial void content – between 15% to 25%. The final
result is a solid, uniform pavement that allows water to
pass through. By allowing rainwater to seep into the ground,
pervious concrete can be instrumental in recharging
groundwater and reducing stormwater runoff.
Pervious concrete has many
environmental benefits:
Stormwater Management.
By allowing water to soak through and infiltrate, pervious
paving reduces stormwater flow and pollutant loads.
Minimize Site Disturbance. Because the use
of pervious concrete allows developers to integrate paving
and drainage, less site area may need to be used to manage
stormwater, allowing a more compact site development
footprint.
Local. Materials are usually extracted and
manufactured locally. The manufacturing process of portland
cement, the binding element of concrete and one of the key
ingredients of pervious concrete, is not tied to a certain
region of the country and the materials involved in the
process are readily available throughout North America.
Recycled Content. First, portland cement is
often produced by including recycled industrial byproducts
such fly ash into the manufacturing process to minimize
dependence on virgin raw materials.
Additionally, materials such as fly
ash, slag cement, silica fume, and recycled aggregates can
be incorporated into concrete, thereby diverting materials
from the landfill and reducing use of virgin materials.
Cool. The voids
reduce mass reducing the heat build up associated with heat
islands. Lighter colored cements can increase reflectivity.
Applications for pervious concrete
include:
- Low-volume pavements
- Residential roads, alleys, and
driveways
- Low-water crossings
- Parking lots
- Sidewalks and pathways
- Patios
- Tennis courts
- Swimming pool decks
- Pavement edge drains
- Foundations/floors for
greenhouses, fish hatcheries, aquatic amusement centers,
and zoos
- Load bearing and other walls
- Sound barriers
- Artificial reefs
- Well linings
- Hydraulic structures
- Tree grates in sidewalks
- Groins and seawalls

CHOCOLATE AFFAIRE WINS
EVENT
INDUSTRY AWARD
GLENDALE,
Ariz. – Glendale’s Office of
Special Events has received the award for Best Fair/Festival by the
Arizona Chapter of the International Special Events Society for the
Glendale Chocolate Affaire.
This honor is part of the society's 2007 Arizona Event
Industry Awards program. The awards, which were given out earlier
this month, recognize special events and festivals from across the
state.
"It's an honor
to be recognized by your peers in the event industry who truly
understand everything that goes into planning and producing a
large-scale outdoor festival like the Glendale Chocolate
Affaire," said Jerry McCoy, Glendale's deputy director of
Marketing/Communications. "Since we started the chocolate
festival 11 years ago, the event continues to grow and attract
thousands of visitors to our downtown."
The annual event delights thousands of chocolate lovers from
throughout the Valley, who are treated to more than three dozen
chocolatiers selling various and sundry confections, as well as
musical performances, romance novelists, activities for children and
tours of Glendale’s own chocolate factory, Cerreta’s Candy
Company.
This
honor adds to the many accolades the event has garnered, including
being named one of the top 100 events in North America by the Washington
Post, the Seattle Times and the American Bus Association.
The event also was bestowed with the 2003 Governor’s Tourism Award
for the Best Special Event in Arizona.

Glendale
Public Library Receives Over $52,000 in Grant Funds for Teen and
Adult Programming
GLENDALE,
Ariz. – Look
for some exciting programs for teens and adults to be coming to the
Glendale Public Library System within the next year, thanks to
$52,200 in LSTA grant monies from the Arizona State Library,
Archives and Public Records Agency, under
the Library Services and Technology Act, which is administered by
the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
The first project, called Game On!, will provide teens with a
safe recreational environment to explore gaming through online and
console video games in interactive programs. The library was awarded
$45,200 to purchase laptops, software, console gaming systems and
items such as game guides, cheat codes, books on gaming careers,
gaming magazines and game art books that can be checked out.
Kristin Fletcher-Spear, a teen librarian at Foothills Branch,
says, “Gaming is an activity enjoyed by all ages, regardless of
economic status. A social atmosphere will be created in the library
with the advent of open gaming labs.”
She goes on to add, “Too many teens simply see the library
as being a ‘book place.’ We feel that by bringing gaming into
the library, we can effectively reach more teens in Glendale. The
library needs to keep up with the technology that plays such a huge
role in the lives of today’s teenagers.”
These labs will be available at all three Glendale libraries:
the Main Library at 5959 W. Brown St.; the Foothills Branch at 19055
N. 57th Ave.; and the Velma Teague Branch at 7010 N. 58th
Ave. They are scheduled to open sometime in September.
Callaloo: An African Arts Stew was funded for $7,000. Cyndee
Landrum, the Multicultural Librarian at the Main Library, has
planned an incredible array of free workshops and performances to
showcase the artistic and cultural diversity of people of African
descent. The library partnered with the Glendale Commission on the
Arts, The Bead Museum and two library programs—Jazz on the Lawn
and Live at the Library—to showcase the unique experiences of
African peoples in the Americas, Caribbean and Africa.
As part of Callaloo, the Glendale Adult Center at 5970 W.
Brown St., will be the site for an exhibit of local African American
artists. The show will run from January 2-February 1, 2008. The Bead
Museum workshops and cultural performances will begin during the
second week of January and conclude March 6..
In planning this series, Landrum noted that the Black
population of the Phoenix area has doubled between 1990 and 2005.
She also pointed out that the close-knit Black community has moved
far beyond its South Phoenix enclave, to every city and town in the
Valley.
“The Black community is a much more diversified one with
many cultural groups,” says Landrum. “Two examples of that
diversity are the Phoenix Lost Boys Center, a haven for Sudanese
refugees, and the Caribbean American Association of Arizona, an
umbrella organization representing the peoples and cultures of a
variety of island nations.”
Many of the performances will be held on Thursday evenings,
being incorporated into the Live at the Library series. Look for
Alexander Laing of the Phoenix Symphony, Kawambe-Omowale African
Drumming, the Caribbean Zone, Afro-Brazilian Dance, and BlackPoet
Ventures.
For more information about these grants, call Fletcher-Spear
at 623-930-3840 or Landrum at 623-930-3572.

His Award Winning Bike!
"What you see before you was actually
a project that my daughter ( Rachel Morales) and I (Steven Morales)
started approx 2 years ago, it began with a basic bicycle frame
being completely disassembled than being reborn with some of the
craziest ideas that I would come up with such as installing spinning
wheels which continue to spin when the bike has come to a stop!!!
and another idea was to install a air ride kit which runs on cold
air using a high pressure switch that runs between a cylinder in the
front of the bike and a Co2 bottle on the rear of the bike with a
1/4 inch airline tubing for the transmission of air, this allows the
bike frame to raise and lower at the touch of a switch, we have won
peoples choice trophy in 2006 and recently took first place
this past weekend at the barrio fest lowrider show in Glendale,
please continue to look out for us at the next show to see what
crazy ideas we will come up with next."

PRESENTATION OF BRONZE NATIONAL
REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES PLAQUES - MAY 17, 2007
At the request of the Mayor and City
Council, bronze plaques for the National Register of Historic
Places have been acquired for presentation to owners of
contributing properties in the Catlin Court Historic District
that are listed on the National Register. A contributing
property is one that is at least 50 years old, has kept its
exterior integrity, and is historically significant as to
architecture, person, place, or event. It is a great honor for
these buildings to be listed on the National Register.
As part of the 2007 National Historic
Preservation Month, the Historic Preservation Commission will
hold a special meeting to present you with a beautiful
10" X 7" bronze plaque. The presentation will be
held on May 14, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. in the Glendale City Council
Chambers located at 5850 West Glendale Avenue, Glendale,
Arizona. It is requested that you hang the plaque next to your
front door so that people can recognize the historical
importance of your building. The plaque is front mounted and
comes with four screws and a set of written instructions for
installation.

1. Land for the
GCC North site was bought in 1984
2. The first buildings were built and occupied in 2000.
3. The first phase (Phase 1--composed of 4 buildings)
for which ground was broken, will be finished in time for fall
classes to start in August of 2008.
4. The square footage of GCC North will be increased from
20,000 to 68,000.
5. This project will be carried out under budget.

GCC North
GCC has grown with the communities it serves
and reaches out aggressively to where students live. A good example
is the GCC
North extension at 57th Avenue and
Happy Valley Road. GCC North opened in fall 2000 with 839 students
and in fall 2004 exceeded 2,500 students. GCC North, created to meet
higher education needs in the Northwest Valley, offers a variety of
courses and programs.
GCC North is projected to enroll 7,950
students annually by 2014. In preparation for this growth, GCC
North's Facilities Master Plan includes expanding facilities to
include a new classroom building and a student services building.
Funding for expanded facilities will come from the citizen-approved
2004 bond. See more detail below.

The GCC North expansion project will add 68,000 gsf to a 20,000 gsf
Existing Site. New construction will add three new buildings:
Instruction, Information
(Library/Media/Computer Commons ), and Student Services ( Business
Services/Student Life/Cafeteria/Fitness Center ); plus a Central
Plant.
The Instruction Bldg. (17,983 gsf) will provide three science
labs for biology, chemistry and the physical sciences.
Additionally, three general purpose classrooms, each capable
of seating 48 students, will be built. Labs and classrooms
surround a large Prep Room core (for the labs), allowing the
building in future phases to support six labs. This use,
following a minor conversion of classrooms to lab facilities, for
which this building's infrastructure is already programmed.
Offices for faculty and staff, a tutoring center and social space
for students to gather and meet colleagues or faculty complete this
building.
The Information Bldg. (17,542 gsf) will house the campus Library,
Computer Commons (with 50 workstations) and Media Center.
Like all buildings on this site, the Instruction Bldg. is programmed
for the future. College's seldom build more libraries, but
computer commons, large and small seem to pop up in many
future designs. Should the need arise, a new High Tech Center
could be built in a future phase and the square footage allocated in
the Instruction Bldg. converted into Library space.
Additionally, a courtyard space (1,000 gsf) on the east end of
the building can be enclosed to serve as a future classroom.

The Student Services Bldg. (26,455 gsf) will house Enrollment
and Business Services (Registration, Advising, Cashier Services,
Financial Aid, Bookstore), Student Services (Student Lounge, Game
Room, Cafeteria, Community Room) and a full service Fitness
Center and Activity Room. In a future phase, planning may
favor a new athletic or fitness center, allowing 2,000 gsf to be
re-purposed to support other business or student service needs.
Likewise, the original community room was designed for 1,800 gsf,
but reduced to 1,200 gsf. Still, infrastructure surrounding
this room would support future expansion of this room should the
need arise.
The final building, the Central Plant (5,695 gsf) will
support electrical power, heating and cooling, maintenance and other
logistical needs of this phase of construction, and at least two
future phases. Additional space will be built to add
additional cooling towers, and those installed have features to
maximize energy consumption and wear and tear on the underground
water lines.
To complete the site, a total of 542 parking spaces will be added,
and lighting security cameras and blue phones installed and
connected to College Safety in the Existing Site.
Throughout the planning of GCC North, sustainability, functionality,
safety and future use have been guiding principles.
Additionally, preservation of the environment has been a theme
throughout, perhaps best signified by the nine Ironwood Trees,
salvaged from the site to become landmarks for this great college in
the Northwest Valley.

THE
TALE OF A TORN UP CABLE
or:
Telecommunications tragedy along the B of A Parking structure
construction road!
A Telephone box
needed to be moved so with some re-arranging of cables under the
surface of the road
It seemed easy enough. The box was to be re-located from the SW
corner of 58th and Palmaire Avenues
to a midpoint on northside of Palmaire Avenue.
The
method to be used was to bore from one open hole at one end of
the street to the other hole at the other end. This method is
used rather than the old fashioned way of opening up a trench in the
entire street. It is cleaner and does not tear up the
surroundings as much as you only have to have to open two holes.

Equipment
getting set up to do the bore the day before on 58th avenue north
of Palmaire avenue. - 2ed photo: view down Palmaire
from 58 avenue where the second bore was to take place,
however, due to the damage to the cable this is going to
wait. - 3ed Photo corner of 57avenue.
Ed
Sharpe from the Glendale Daily Planet sure got and eye full when
he arrived at his building at 58th avenue and Palmaire Friday
morning.
He
had noticed the trucks set up to do some under the street
boring from one open hole at one part of the street to the other
whole at the other end. This is done in place of the older method
of one giant open trench.
There
were two runs to be tunneled. one along 58 avenue and the other in front
of Sharpe's building on Palmaire Avenue
But
the very next day...
During
the process of boring one of the underground cables containing
2400 pairs of telephone lines was hit

Kevin
Mathieu with Qwest examining the cable damaged
from underground boring to prepare the change in
utility locations for the new Bank Of America Parking
Garage in Catlin Count.
Damage
often happens to underground cables and splices have to be made.
Damage to this cable is minimal... As evidenced by the number of
line pairs in this large
2400 pair telephone cable
you
can just imagine what it would be like to re-splice it if it had
been completely severed. Had
this cable been completely severed it would gave created 4
to 5 days of work to repair with personnel working 2 12 hour
shifts for 4 to 5 days.
Sharpe
was thankful one of those line pairs was not his and there was no
interruption of telephone service for him.
Why
was Sharpe fascinated by the details on this cable? He
is also the archivist for a Glendale Arizona
communications museum project... See
www.smecc.org
The
planning, installation and repair of telecommunications systems
and other forms of communications has been a fascination for him
all of his life!

straightens out as front sections move forward.

David
Molina of Phoenix is the operator of the Vermeer 18x22 boring
machine. David has been working with these machines for 20 years. (
I have much more data to add on the machine.)
The shaft of the boring head enters the ground
at an angle but straightens out as front sections move forward.

At
the far end of this photo you can see operator David Molina in
his orange vest barely visible. The Vermeer boring machine will
complete the first bore from end to end in 12 minutes to cover
this 120 feet.
Inspecting the end bore hole.

The
large boring head is attached and pulled back though the first
pilot bore that was done thus making the final large
tunnel that is needed to carry many large cables. Note it is safely
under the cable that crosses it's path.
The
Boring machine is all packed up and ready top go on to
the next job! |

Story

Star
Presiding
Judge Elizabeth Finn gave instructional
speeches about how the court works.
About
30 students from
Copper
Canyon
High School
celebrated National Law Day by visiting Glendale City Court Tuesday
morning.
The
theme of this year’s Law Day was “Liberty Under Law: Empowering
Youth, Assuring Democracy.”
Activities
during the day included a mock council meeting, a tour of the court
building, and instructional speeches about how the court works by
Presiding Judge Elizabeth Finn, the role of the prosecutor by Tamika
Cheatham, role of the public defender by Percival Bradley and the
role of the Glendale City Attorney by Misty Leslie.
Yucca
District Councilmember Joyce Clark gave a welcome speech to the
students, then helped instruct them as they played the roles of
council, mayor and citizens during a mock council meeting where the
agenda item was ‘teen curfew.’
“I
have seen the city grow from 40,000 when I moved here in 1968 to
250,000 people today,”
Clark
said. “We are the fourth largest city in
Arizona
and nationally 74th, we are not a little city anymore.”
Clark
went on to explain the role and duties of being an elected council
member and the importance of laws.

“Without
law, there is chaos,”
Clark
said. “It gives us a framework to treat others fairly and
respectfully. The system does work, even though some people think it
doesn’t. Law is important because it keeps us from sinking into
anarchy. Nothing is solved by violence, it begets more violence.”
She
then gave the students an oral quiz about the Supreme Court. The
students who were from Meggan Brooks’ social studies class had
done their homework.
“How
many Supreme Court justices are there,”
Clark
inquired.
“Nine,”
one student replied back.
She
also asked them how many Black justices there were, (2) how many
women justices (2), Hispanic justices (0), and how many from
Arizona
. While they all knew of Sandra Day O’Connor, she stumped them on
the second which was William Rehnquist.
A
luncheon in the courtyard was followed by certificates of appreciation
which capped off the day.
In
Arizona
there are approximately 12,000 lawyers practicing law. National Law
Day is an annual event held in conjunction with the American Bar
Association to expand awareness of how the legal system impacts
lives.

from the 2006 Davey
Awards Competition. The award was given for CouryGraph Productions
video Catlin Court Historic Home Tour Home #13, which was narrated
by homeowner Tim Quinn.
Tim Quinn and Lori Green have been a significant and driving
influence in the improvement of Catlin Court over the past few
years. They moved to Catlin Court in 2002 and worked to restore
their historic home gaining the admiration of neighbors and even
national recognition through HGTV filming of her home.
In addition, Green and Quinn brought the entire neighborhood
together to accomplish projects ranging from clean-up drives to
obtaining grants for restoration of properties. In addition Green
was the recipient of the Ruth Bryne Historic Perseveration award for
her work in the Catlin Court Historic District community.
Commenting on CouryGraph Productions award, Tim Quinn said,
"Your video profile on the Home Tour has proved invaluable as a
tool in the Catlin Court District's efforts to bring knowledge of
our neighborhood to a broader segment of the public. I am
appreciative of your skills in capturing the very essence of my
home."
Lori Green continued, "You did a beautiful job on capturing the
experience. The music really sets the stage. You made my house look
absolutely charming."
Catlin Court, which began in 1914, was one of the earliest,
fashionable neighborhoods in the township of Glendale. Many of the
former mayors, wealthy merchants, doctors, reverends, builders and
educators lived in these homes. Through the work of Quinn and Green,
and other proud homeowners, this neighborhood is quickly becoming a
sought after address once again.
"It is honor to receive a highly respected Davey Award for work
in publicizing events that take place in the city of Glendale,"
said Ed Sharpe, Director for CouryGraph Productions and its
subsidiaries. "This national award highlights the high
standards of excellence we wish to achieve. In addition, it is our
wish to provide our viewer-ship with information they can trust and
enjoy.
"Our office is in the commercial section of Catlin Court
Historic District and seeing the residents taking such active steps
to revitalize this area is amazing!" Sharpe stated.
The 2nd Annual Davey Awards were sponsored by The Creative Group,
the leading creative professional staffing company in the world,
ADWEEK magazine, FSB (Fortune Small Business magazine) and OnRequest.
The Davey Awards exclusively honor the "Davids" of
creativity, the finest small firms, agencies and companies in the
world. David defeated the giant Goliath with a big idea and a little
rock - the sort of thing small firms do each year. The annual
International Davey Awards honors the achievements of the
"Creative Davids" who derive their strength from big
ideas, rather than big budgets. The Davey Awards is the leading
awards competition specifically for smaller firms, where firms
compete with their peers to win the recognition they deserve.
In winning a Davey, CouryGraph Productions joins the ranks of other
high-profile winners of this most sought-after award. "The
incredible quality and growth of entries again proves that creative
excellence, fresh ideas and great conceptual execution is a hallmark
of the best small agencies and firms" noted Linda Day, a
director of the IAVA. She added, "On behalf of the entire
Academy, we are honored to have judged the 2nd Annual Davey Awards
and thrilled to recognize such a diverse and accomplished pool of
creative work."
The Davey Awards is judged and overseen by the International Academy
of the Visual Arts (IAVA), a 200+ member organization of leading
professionals from various disciplines of the visual arts dedicated
to embracing progress and the evolving nature of traditional and
interactive media.
This award, among the numerous Telly, Aegis, Accolade, Marcom,
Berkeley Film festival awards and being an official selection for he
New York Independent Film and Video Festival, herald the end of a
productive and well recognized year of 2006 for CouryGraph
Productions. To see CouryGraph Productions news and video

The
Glendale Police Department
Announces the
2007
VIN Etching Schedule
Auto theft prevention continues in the city of
Glendale
with our FREE VIN Etching Program!
Dates:
March 3rd
April
28th
September
15th
November 3rd
Time:
8:30 am to 11:30 am
Location:
Glendale Adult Center - in the Parking Lot
5970
W. Brown Street
What
is VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) Etching?
VIN
Etching is the process of permanently etching the vehicle’s
17-digit Vehicle identification Number (VIN) on each piece of
window glass on the vehicle.
Why should you
consider VIN Etching on your vehicle as a visual theft deterrent
against auto theft?
When a vehicle is
stolen the thief must change the identity of the vehicle by
changing the VIN plate on the dashboard.
With a new VIN plate in place, he now has a new vehicle,
but with a vehicle that has been etched the thief must replace
each piece of window glass. This
extra work and expense may cause a thief to steal an un-etched
vehicle.
How
long will the process take?
It should take
approximately 10 minutes per vehicle.
To begin the process, a vehicle owner must show proof of
vehicle ownership, current registration and complete a consent
form provided by the police department.
Please contact the Glendale Police
Department at 623-930-4030 for any further details.

GLENDALE, Ariz.
– The Glendale Auto Theft Unit conducted a surveillance
operation yesterday (4/12), in the Glendale Community College (G.C.C)
parking lot that resulted in the arrest of five
auto theft suspects, recovered stolen property and seized money
and drugs.
Acting on a lead they
received on a Dodge Intrepid being linked to several cases in
which Dodge trucks were stolen from the Glendale Community College
parking lot, detectives followed the car from an apartment complex
in Phoenix to the G.C.C. parking lot in Glendale.
Detectives and campus security guards observed one of the
suspects get out of the Dodge Intrepid and break into a Dodge
truck parked nearby. A second suspect exited the car and drove the
stolen truck out of the parking lot with the Intrepid following
closely behind.
With the assistance of several other Glendale units and the
Phoenix Air Unit, the vehicles were followed until they stopped in
the area of 1800 W. Cortez in Phoenix.
At that time the suspects were taken into custody.
Shortly thereafter, a search warrant was served at the
apartment that the suspects were seen leaving from earlier in the
day.
Inside the apartment,
detectives seized $6,000.00, six stolen guns (which were linked to
other stolen Dodge trucks), marijuana and other stolen property.
During interviews, the main two suspects admitted to
stealing many Dodge trucks throughout the Valley.
These two suspects are 23 year old Juan DeDios Velazquez
(06/27/1983) and 24 year old Ernesto Lopez-Rodriguez (07/27/1982).
They were booked on numerous charges including several auto
theft cases in Glendale and Phoenix.
This was an outstanding
example of a multi-agency enforcement effort and teamwork,
resulting in the arrest of several suspects and the recovery of
stolen property.

Glendale
Daily Planet – The next time an injured family cat or dog is
rescued from a fire, Glendale Firefighters will be able to provide
treatment with a new EMS bag just like their human owners get.
The
“Fido Bag” was unveiled April
11th, at the Sun
Valley Animal Shelter located at 7150
N. 110th at 10:00AM. The “Fido Bag” contains the
necessary medical equipment to provide oxygen, treat burns, and
provide treatment for the injured pets.
Elio Pompa, PIO for the Glendale Fire Department explained: "Each
year the Glendale Fire Department responds to house fires where
family pets are unable to escape the flames, suffer severe smoke
inhalation and burns. Many
pets do not survive these fires".
Barry
Korb, board president of the Sun
Valley Animal Shelter, presented a
check in the amount of $4,000 to the Glendale Firefighters. These
bags will be placed in every Glendale Fire-truck including the
Crisis Response Vans.
“Even though our first priority will always be to save human lives, we know that for every 6 out of 10
residential fires we respond to, we
can expect to find a pet or two inside”, said Fire
Chief Mark Burdick. “This
Fido Bag is yet another innovative way to increase the level of
service to the community, and provides us with a unique way to treat
our 4 legged friends” he concluded.

Coke's
New Distribution Facility Pours
130 New Jobs Into Glendale Arizona
Story
and Photos C- 2007 Ed Sharpe Glendale Daily Planet
Coca-Cola
Enterprises Bottling Company of Arizona celebrated the grand opening
of its new Distribution Center in Glendale with a ribbon cutting
ceremony on 10 AM April 4th, 2007.
Glendale Mayor Elaine Scruggs, Representative Jerry P. Weiers
and other municipal dignitaries, citizens and
Coca-Cola employees were in attendance this morning..
The new 120,000 square foot facility sits on over 13 acres of land
and will employ approximately 130 individuals once it is fully
staffed. The Distribution Center will serve the West Valley
including everything west of the I-17 and north of the I-10. The
primary reason this distribution center was built was due to the
tremendous growth in the Valley, specifically the West Valley. The
Tempe Coca-Cola manufacturing, bottling and distribution facility is
land locked and thus cannot physically expand further. For some time
now, the Tempe location has been operating at 150% capacity to keep
up with the growth and needs in Arizona. The Glendale
facility is one of only a few ‘Distribution Centers’ opening at
this time throughout the Coca-Cola
Enterprises (CCE) system. All other facilities that are currently
being rolled out within the CCE
system include other facets (sales, production, merchandising and
etc). Distribution Centers such as Glendale’s will be more
efficient due to being able to focus exclusively on lean
distribution
techniques. Coca-Cola is creating a 24-7 operation that includes a
collaborative, innovative, team based work
environment for improved morale, lower turnover, and continuous
improvement.
“We
are very excited to be able to expand our operations into an area of
the state that is presently seeing so much growth. Coca-Cola’s new
distribution center will feel right at home in Glendale where
various other customer/clients of ours reside including the
University of Phoenix Stadium - Arizona Cardinals and The Phoenix
Coyotes”,
stated Tammy Lambros, Coca-Cola Arizona Vice President.
"We
are very pleased to welcome Coca Cola to the city of Glendale.
This new site will offer more quality jobs for our residents
so that they can work a short distance from their home.
We are also excited to know that Coca Cola will be a true
corporate community partner in many programs and activities
that benefit our community in a variety of ways"

Children
help rescue newborn kitten
Elizabeth
Jackman -Glendale Star
A
kitten trapped inside a drainage grate became a celebrity Friday
morning as television crews captured his dramatic rescue on tape.
Children
playing outside
Challenger
Charter
School
thought they heard a faint ‘meow’ coming from underneath the
grate and told their teachers who called the Glendale Fire
Department.
Firefighters
arrived at the scene and quickly assessed the situation.
“We
used a thermal imaging camera we use to pick up body heat so we were
able to tell the little kitten was alive,” 159 Engine Capt. Joe
Spitler said. “Also we saw some motion.”
Firefighters
Kari Lajoie and John Burch quickly went to work to free the tiny
gray kitten and the children anxiously looked on.
“We
used a car wire that is usually used for kids locked in a
vehicle,” Lajoie said.
After
retrieving the kitten, who appeared to be less than a week old,
Lajoie and Burch administered oxygen and used a saline solution to
clean one of its eyes that appeared a bit infected.
Children
swarmed around to pet the little gray bundle of fur they quickly
named “Smokey.”
Lajoie
said they would be taking Smokey to the veterinarian to be checked
over and from there a decision would be made about finding him a
home.
Fire
Department spokesperson Daniel Valenzuela said it was a real “feel
good” opportunity for the firefighters because so many of their
calls, traffic accidents, fires and drownings end in tragedy.
“This
opportunity showed the children a good outcome,” Valenzuela said.
“Also, that we care about animals.”

The
University of Phoenix Stadium, home to the NFL’s Arizona
Cardinals, is ranked among the 10 most impressive sports
structures in the world and featured on the Discovery
Channel’s Extreme Engineering series. In addition to
being an architectural specimen, the stadium operates a
network unrivaled for its innovation and cutting edge
communications infrastructure. The real innovation,
however, lies in the fact that the technologies that
provide the Cardinals with a state of the art
communications network are the same technologies that any
business can easily and cost effectively integrate into
its own new or existing NGN infrastructure.
Building its network around the Cisco Unified
Communications System and Intelligent Network, and
Sumitomo’s FutureFLEX Air-blown Fiber backbone and
structured infrastructure solution, the Cardinals have
used nearly every option in the IP networking playbook.
The result: An ultra efficient, flexible, and scalable
infrastructure that takes the offense to ensure the
profitability of its network operations.
With the FutureFLEX solution, network expansions,
upgrades, and reconfigurations can be accomplished in
moments. With the robust air-blown fiber technology in
place, the Cardinals have a network that provides
immediate flexibility for their communications environment
today, along with immediate scalability,
bandwidth-on-demand and real-time control of network
capacity.
The Arizona Cardinals have executed a play that provides a
swift, easy, and cost effective way to deliver a
world-class experience. Their network is their platform
and is ready for the future of emerging technologies, such
as Cisco's TelePresence. Fans of any event at the
Cardinals Stadium will be treated to a new experience- One
we believe will become the Touchdown! Join the Arizona
Cardinals IT Director Mark Feller and representatives from
Cisco, Sumitomo and Insight to learn more about the
deployment and business advantages of this future-ready
network platform at the core of a revolutionary fan

STORY MOVED TO PUBLIC SAFETY ARCHIVES
HERE
HIT

FIREFIGHTERS
AND HOSPITAL STAFF WHO
SAVED HER LIFE
GLENDALE,
AZ – On September 23, 2006,
Glendale Firefighters responded to a car motorcycle crash involving Laura
Graff, a 24-year-old Glendale woman, who
was riding her motorcycle at 59th Avenue and Mercer Lane in
Glendale. They found Graf barely clinging to life from the severe
injuries.
Laura
suffered multiple facial, pelvic and other injuries, including a torn
aorta, the main artery that carries blood from the heart to all organs. In
addition to these horrific injuries her heart stopped beating on her way
to the hospital, said Elio Pompa, a deputy Glendale fire chief. Pompa
continued on describing Graff's ordeal as an
"incredible story of survival," that would had not been possible
without the assistance of firefighters, ambulance workers and
medical-care providers who labored to keep her alive.
Dr.
Chris Salvino, a trauma surgeon at John C. Lincoln North
Mountain Hospital, said Graff received excellent emergency-medical care
before and during her hospital stay. Salvino
was impressed by how lucky Graff was since she suffered from a torn
aorta. Normally this injury is fatal in all but one or two percent
of cases, indeed, Graff really beat the reaper.

A Real Charmer Opens In Downtown Glendale
By Debi
McCreary, Special to the Glendale Daily Planet-Photos by GDP
Saturday
March 3rd Cee Cees’ celebrated their Grand Opening.
This event celebration had entertainment, gift giveaways, food and
fun.
Cee Cee’s on the Corner opened in
downtown Glendale offering homemade Mexican cuisine. But wait there’s
more. This is not your typical Mexican restaurant. You will not find
sombreros and maracas adorning the place.
Fitting right in with the downtown
Glendale ambiance Cee Cee’s on the Corner is a real charmer. As you
stroll up the walk through the white picket fence it takes you back to a
time gone by. You might even think you are visiting grandma.
When you open the front door your nose
will certainly tell you that you are at home… at least someone’s home.
The menu looks like a personal invitation to a wonderful experience from
your first bite to your last. When you’ve tasted the food you have to
agree that love is definitely an ingredient in each and every dish.
After your meal you can wander into the
next room and enjoy shopping in Cee Cee’s vintage, antique and one of a
kind shop. Cee Cee’s is open Tue. – Thurs. 11:00am-5:00pm Fri. and
Sat. 11:00am-9:00pm and closed Sun. and Mon.
The Grand Opening celebration was
sponsored by Debi McCreary, REALTOR®
at 1st USA Realty Professionals along with Trilogy Home Loans,

Thread
art has its origins in West Africa where making art objects by hand have a
long history. With its intricate art form, silk is woven into amazingly
bright, vivid and colorful arrays of threat that is applied to a canvas
one color at a time. The silk thread is arranged in rows and spirals in
contrasting directions that highlight the vivid thread colors and gives a
surprisingly raised appearance to the finished mural. The finished product
is breathtakingly beautiful. The spirals and flow of the silk adds a
unique dimension that is truly a world-class work of art.

GLENDALE,

through historic Catlin Court District.

Glendale
collected old cell phones in
honor of National Recycling Day 2206
GDP
- FOlks celeaned
out the drawers and dusted off those old mobiles; in celebration of
National Recycling Day Nov. 15, 2006. The city of Glendale developed a
special cell phone-recycling program, which ran Wednesday, Nov. 15,
through Sunday, Nov. 19.
There were four locations where the surplus
material was collected:
Jobing.com
Arena - 9400 W.Maryland Ave.
- Glendale Main Library - 5959
W. Brown St.
- Foothills Library Branch -
19055 N. 57th Ave.
- Velma Teague Library Branch -
7010 N. 58th Ave.
The
West Valley Advocacy Center then collected and arranged the phones for recycling. Once the cell phones are
refurbished, the phones will become available for victims of stalking and
domestic violence.
It
is important to note that the city of Glendale does not recycle cell
phones through its traditional recycling program.
According
to the Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association, cell phones
are replaced approximately after 18-months of use. It was estimated that
130 million phones were disposed in 2005. With toxic elements found in
cell phones, it is important to keep cell phones out of landfills.
America
Recycles Day was created to raise awareness of recycling and
promote the environmental benefits of recycling
