A walk though history.... The Media evolution WILL be televised!

Remember it was the The Abraham Zapruder 8mm film that showed Kennedy getting shot. This was one of the most shocking documented events in history...... it was NOT on 35 mm or even 16 mm... it was on a 8mm Bell and Howell home movie camera the 60's equiv. of a camera phone, a palmcorder or PDA!

Although we enjoy our large cameras we must remember that it is not always the tools we use, or the training we have... sometimes it is being in the right place at the right time.

GET A BIRD'S EYE VIEW OF THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE NEW DOWNTOWN PARKING GARAGE

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- When the first vehicles pull in to park in the new downtown Glendale parking garage this winter, they will be pulling into a structure boasting 11,000 square feet of retail and office space with five parking levels and beautiful brick façade reminiscent of Glendale's roots. But you can see it now in its infancy thanks to the up-above view offered at a new viewing station.

The viewing station, located in the McCarthy offices on the third floor the Bank of America Building (5800 W. Glenn Drive, suite 330), will be open from 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday. This station will provide great views of the project during all of its critical stages.

Construction of the new 600-space downtown parking structure began in March and is scheduled to be completed in January 2008.

This new parking structure is replacing a 140-space surface parking lot. It will have one level of underground parking, retail and restaurants at ground level and three parking levels above. The retail area will be on the north side of the structure, adjacent to Catlin Court. Entrance and exits will front 58th Drive and 58th Avenue.

It will be the third parking garage in downtown Glendale.

For project updates or information, visit

2011 Super Bowl Bid Awarded

Scottsdale, AZ – After bidding on the 2011 Super Bowl this morning in Nashville, Arizona representatives were informed moments ago by National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell that the NFL owners have awarded Super Bowl XLV (45) to North Texas.

“While we are disappointed not to be hosting Super Bowl XLV, we are in a great position for future games,” said Arizona Super Bowl XLII Host Committee Chairman Mike Kennedy . “ Arizona is in the Super Bowl business. It’s not a matter of ‘if’ the big game returns, it’s a matter of ‘when’.”

wpe1B.gif (151237 bytes)                     GLENDALE, Ariz. 2/27/07– A suspected car thief eluded Glendale Police this afternoon when he ran from detectives, giving a local mother and her children a scare, and disrupting a neighborhood for about two hours.

At 3:45 pm on Tuesday (2/27), Detective Sgt. Brandon Blanco was looking for stolen vehicles in south Glendale.  He located one, occupied by a male driver and a female passenger, near 67th Avenue and Bethany Home Road.  He followed the car as it turned west onto Montebello Avenue from 67th Ave.  The driver presumably determined that the police were behind him, although Sgt. Blanco was in an unmarked car.  The suspect quickly pulled over in the 6700 block of W. Montebello Avenue and ran from the stolen car.  Sgt. Blanco stayed with the car to deal with the female passenger.  She was taken into custody without incident.

The suspect ran to an apartment at 6740 W. Montebello and went inside.  A woman and three children were inside, but ran out when the suspect entered.  Police surrounded the apartment in an effort to contain the suspect.  The SWAT team responded and efforts were made to locate and arrest the suspect.  Three adjoining apartments were evacuated.  Regrettably, the suspect was not located, leading police to believe he was able to flee the area before the perimeter was established.

The suspect is Patrick Romero (8/12/1980).  He is an Hispanic male, 5 feet 10 inches tall, 220 pounds, with closely shaved hair.  Detectives want to speak with him regarding his use of the stolen car, and for trespassing in the apartment.

It is not known if Romero was armed at the time of the incident.  Romero did not threaten or assault the woman and children in the apartment.  The woman indicated she does not know Romero.  The role of the female passenger is still under investigation at this time.

Methamphetamines: Fact or Fiction

GLENDALE, Ariz. – A methamphetamine-addiction crisis seems to be sweeping Arizona. A few statistics reinforce the trend:

·        In 2003, 42 percent of females booked into Maricopa county jail tested positive for meth.

·        Surveys show that 65 percent of state child-abuse and neglect cases involve meth.

·        Over the past five years, there were 1,412 meth-production-related seizures in Arizona, according to the Attorney General’s office.

One way to fight this popular drug of choice is to learn the facts. James Stoehr, Ph.D., Professor, MWU College of Health Sciences, will present “Methamphetamines: Fact and Fiction” at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 20 at Foothillls Branch Library, 19055 N. 57th Ave.

He will lead a discussion of the facts and myths surrounding crystal meth use. He will review historical accounts of methamphetamine use from World War II to its widespread distribution in the 1960s. He will also share signs and symptoms associated with its abuse, the current epidemic that is occurring in Arizona and some successful treatments for recovery from addiction.

Harvey Butchart, an Icon of Grand Canyon Exploration At Library

7 p.m. on May 17 in the Roadrunner Room at Foothills Branch Library

GLENDALE, Ariz. – John Harvey Butchart hiked and researched the Grand Canyon for over 40 years in his 1,000 days of exploring that great chasm carved by the Colorado River. His love affair with the Canyon began in 1945, following the routine stop of a tour bus at the South Rim.

The math professor at Arizona State College (now Northern Arizona University) found his life’s great purpose: to plunge into the canyon and decipher its mysteries. He wanted to rediscover the spider web of early American Indian routes crisscrossing the gorge, to climb its peaks and buttes and to record his findings. Obsessed and physically gifted, Butchart led the way by walking over more of the Grand Canyon than anyone else has before or since.

Learn more about Butchart when authors Elias Butler and Thomas Myers, M.D., present “Grand Obsession: Harvey Butchart and the Exploration of Grand Canyon’s Backcountry.” They will discuss Butchart’s feats, tragedies and legacy, while tracing his footsteps along the treacherous routes he pioneered in the wilds of the Grand Canyon, at 7 p.m. on May 17 in the Roadrunner Room at Foothills Branch Library, 19055 N. 57th Ave.

Butler is an Arizona native, writer and photographer who prefers to spend much of the year trekking in the Southwest’s backcountry. Dr.  Myers earned his M.D. from the University of Arizona and worked as a physician at the Grand Canyon for nearly a decade. He has hiked the Canyon hinterland extensively and rowed the Colorado River several times.

This free lecture is part of the library’s Canyon Country series, sponsored by the Grand Canyon Association. For more information, call 623-930-3844.

MAYOR PROCLAIMS MARCH 19-25

AS AIR FORCE WEEK

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Glendale Mayor Elaine Scruggs is proclaiming the week of March 19th as Air Force Week in recognition of Luke Air Force Base in Glendale.

Scruggs presented the proclamation to Col. David Orr, vice commander at Luke AFB, during Tuesday’s (March 13) City Council meeting.

Luke AFB is one of only six bases in the country to be selected by the Pentagon to host Air Force Week activities this year.

The purpose of the week is to help educate people on the important role the Air Force plays in preserving the freedoms that Americans enjoy. Air Force Week will also give citizens the opportunity to meet active duty personnel, reservists and National Guard members.

“Glendale is so proud to be home of Luke Air Force Base, the world’s largest   F-16 training base, and call its airmen our neighbors, friends and family,” Scruggs said.

Glendale annexed Luke AFB into its city in 1995 in an effort to protect the base’s mission and better manage the rapid population growth and development of what was once agricultural land near and around the military facility.

In celebration of Air Force Week, the Glendale mayor will drop the puck with Lt. Gen. Carrol “Howie” Chandler during a ceremonial opening face-off at the Phoenix Coyotes game on March 17. A former commander at Luke AFB, Chandler is currently the deputy chief of staff for operations, plans and requirements at U.S. Air Force Headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Also returning to Glendale for Air Force Week is another former Luke AFB commander, Gen. Phil Breedlove, vice director of strategic plans and policy for the joint staff at the Pentagon. Both Chandler and Breedlove will be joining Gen. Noel “Tom” Jones, Luke’s current base commander, at various activities throughout the week.

Air Force Week activities will culminate with the Luke Days Air Show March 24-25 featuring the Thunderbirds, the elite Air Force aerial demonstration team. The theme for this year’s Luke Days event is “A Show of Force ’07 – From Heritage to Horizons” to celebrate the Air Force’s 60th anniversary.

Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's
life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the
results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of
other's opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most
important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.
They somehow already know what you truly want to become.
Everything else is secondary.

This instrument can teach, it can illuminate; yes, and it can even inspire. But it can do so only to the extent that humans are determined to use it to those ends. Otherwise it is merely wires and lights in a box.

When the politicians complain that TV turns the proceedings into a circus, it should be made clear that the circus was already there, and that TV has merely demonstrated that not all the performers are well trained. Edward R. Murrow attribution.
