In a ceremony held on October 27th in Orlando, Florida, the Glendale Police

As
a Test, Glendale Begins Using
Propane to Fuel New Police
Vehicles
By
Bette Sharpe - Glendale Daily
Planet
To
test the cost efficiency of using
propane instead of unleaded fuel,
the Glendale Police Department has
begun to use propane as a fuel in
two new vehicles. The city received
at grant from the Gila River Indian
Community which enabled the Glendale
Police Department to acquire a total
of 18 new vehicles. Five of those
vehicles are getting readied to use
propane as a fuel. Actually two of
the five SUVs have been retrofitted
for using propane and are in use.
Three Chevrolet Tahoes are waiting
to be equipped with specific police
equipment.
Glendale
Mayor Jerry Weiers has a personal
vehicle that uses propane and was
enthusiastic in his remarks during
the press conference on Monday,
February 24, 2014 announcing the
retrofitting of five new vehicles to
use propane gas instead of unleaded
gas.
A
gallon of propane is about 50% less
than a gallon of unleaded. The
vehicles using propane will need
fewer oil changes and the engines
should last longer, thus adding to
the anticipated savings without any
downsides to engine performance.
Another
positive in switching to propane as
a fuel, is that the City of Glendale
will reduce its carbon footprint by
a little. But it is a start.
Glendale could lead the way for
other Arizona cities to switch to
propane.

Sharpe/Glendale Daily Planet no.

Jerry Weiers at the February 24, at
the City of Glendale Field

vehicles will be using propane gas
as a cost saving measure and to
shrink the city’s carbon
footprint. A grant from the Gila
River Indian Community gave the
Glendale Police Department a total
of 18 Chevrolet TahoeSUVs.

Bette

City
of Glendale Buyer, Doug Howitt
demonstrated how easy it is to fuel
up the new vehicles. The City of
Glendale Field Operations Division,

6210 W. Myrtle Avenue is the only
propane fueling station at present.
There are plans for a propane fuel
station in north Glendale.

Police Department Memorial Bench
Dedication Honoring K-9
Ronin

By

Bette

In
a green belt area on the north
corner of 66th and Behrend Avenues
there is one and only one bench. The
bench on the eastside of the little
park was dedicated to Ronin on
January 27, 2014. Ronin, a member of
the Glendale Police Department K-9
Unit was killed in the line of duty
on June 20th, 2013. Officer Wes
Zygmont, Ronin’s partner, was
injured in the same incident and has
since recovered from his injuries.
As Glendale Police Chief Debbie
Black said in the Introduction to
the dedication, "June 20, 2013
was a rough day for Glendale".
Ronin
and his human partner trained and
played in the park almost every day
of the week. The plaque below Ronin’s
memorial bench reads, "Glendale
Police K-9 Ronin was killed in the
line of duty on June 20th, 2013
while protecting his partner, fellow
officers and the citizens of
Glendale."

Bette
Sharpe/Glendale Daily Planet no.

Officer
Wes Zygmont held his emotions back
as he began to remember his partner,
Ronin. Officer Zygmont credits Ronin
for saving his life on June 20th,
2013. Both Officer Zygmont and Ronin
were shot on June 20th, 2013.
Officer Zygmont has recovered from
his injuries.
Dogs
make us laugh, they are loyal and
they offer unconditional love.
Thanks

Glendale’s
Kids & Cops and lots of community
support - Dec 2013
By
Bette Sharpe - Glendale Daily Planet
Each
young shopper had a budget to stick to.
Usually it was the officer who kept track of
the numbers. The young shoppers were
selecting gifts for members of their
families. In many cases, family members came
first. There was plenty of support from
family and friends for the kids. Some lucky
students saw their teachers at the Target on
43rd and Peoria in Glendale while the kids
did their holiday shopping. It was a very
good idea to have adult family members come
and help or watch the kids were shopping,
after all some of the young shoppers are not
old enough to drive. A special thank you to
James Pyle, Manager and all of the Target
staff who were on hand to help locate toys
and games with marble, among other things,
and to help with the gift wrapping.

Bette
Sharpe/Glendale Daily Planet no. 3893.
Brothers
Fabian and Roman Murillo went shopping with
Officer C. M. Bastin at Target on Thursday,
December 18th as part of the annual holiday
event.

Bette
Sharpe/Glendale Daily Planet no. 3883.
Officer
M. Barnett with Donovan Scott selected their
gifts. While they wait at the gift wrapping
table. The last step for the young shoppers
before going home for the evening is to
collect a bag-of-goodies. This is like a
stocking that they can enjoy themselves or
share. Most of the kids were selecting gifts
for members of their families, putting
themselves last. The annual Glendale Kids
& Cops event was held at the Glendale
Target located on the southwest corner of
43rd and Peoria. Officer Barnett has done
this before and still says, "It’s a
blast".

Bette
Sharpe/Glendale Daily Planet no. 3850.
Glendale
Police Officer Greg Mills confers with Jacob
Hennessey about some gift selections with
shopping at the annual Glendale Kids and
Cops annual event. This year as in the last
three years, the event was held at the
Target located on the southwest corner of
43rd and Peoria in Glendale. Before they
went shopping, the kids and cops had dinner
at a nearby Submarinos Italian Restaurant.
What a night!

THE
GLENDALE FIRE DEPARTMENT PROMOTES SPACE
HEATER SAFETY
Glendale,
Ariz. –– Home heating equipment is the
leading cause of home fire fatalities,
according to the National Fire Protection
Association, and with half of all home
heating fires occurring during the months of
December, January, and February the Glendale
Fire Department is reminding residents to be
safe when using space heaters. Residents are
encouraged to take these life-saving steps
to ensure their home is safe:
˛
Always
turn your space heater off before going to
sleep
˛
Keep
space heater at least 3 feet away from
anything combustible like furniture,
bedding,
clothing, etc.
˛
Always
place heater on flat, sturdy non-combustible
surfaces like ceramic tile
˛
Keep
heater away from children and pets
˛
Never
place gasoline in a kerosene heater, even
small amounts greatly increase the risk of
fire
˛
Propane
space heaters should never be used indoors
or where natural ventilation is not
available
˛
If
you leave the room, turn your space heater
off
˛
Make
sure your space heater is designed for
indoor use and has been certified by a
recognized
testing
laboratory (such as Underwriters Laboratory
UL) using the latest safety standards
˛
If
you are looking to purchase a space heater,
consider one with a build in
“tip-over-switch”; this
is
designed to shut off the heater when knocked
over

It is with sadness
we report the passing of a Glendale Police officer shot Friday evening.
Officer Brad Jones,
27, passed away from his injuries at about 1 a.m. Saturday, surrounded
by friends, family and other officers, said a tearful Glendale Police
Chief Steven Conrad. (As reported by Amy Wang AZ
AZCENTRAL)
Brad Jones had been with Glendale police
for only about four years and is survived by his wife and two young
children..
"He was a devoted husband and father,
and I would ask you all to keep them in your prayers," Conrad
stated. (As reported by Amy Wang AZ AZCENTRAL)
"He had a deep passion for law
enforcement and helping people. He will be missed by every member of
this department," Conrad said. (As reported by Bob
McClay/KTAR and Associated Press)
Jones was shot Friday at an apartment
complex near 75th and Glendale avenues while accompanying a probation
officer to a meeting with a convict. It was during this meeting that
the probationer pulled out a gun and began firing, striking the police
officer at least once before fleeing in his vehicle, said Brent
Coombs, a Glendale police spokesman. (As reported by
Amy Wang AZ AZCENTRAL)
"This was a young gentlemen, who,
when he made contact with the community, the community would call the
police department and tell them what a good job this officer was
doing. He has citations in his file for those kinds of things. He was
just a bright, young, energetic, great guy," Glendale Police
Sergeant Brent Coombs said. (As reported by Bob McClay/KTAR
and Associated Press)
Jones managed to call for help about
8:30 p.m. and was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in
Phoenix, as other responding officers pursued the suspect in the
stolen police car, which crashed in the 8100 block of West Glendale
Avenue.
The suspect, 20-year-old Ryan Heisler?
He received life-threatening injuries to his upper body but
unfortunately is the one in the encounter that lived. The
suspect remains in critical condition at Good Samaritan hospital.
The scene is closed until 9
p.m. Saturday as detectives continue to investigate the scene, Please
plan your route away from this area so police can accomplish
their investigation.
